Best of 93 : OLTL with Marty's rape and Viki/Clint/Sloan/Dorian, leading to the beginnings of the Victor Lord murder trial and eventually the DID debacle.

GH was good with Alan/Monica/Rhonda, Sonny & Brenda and Luke & Laura's return.

Best of 2002 for me were B&B and OLTL. That was the last solid year for both shows. OLTL: I liked Natalie, Mitch's return, Live week and the dead baby lie, and Lindsay vs Norah. B&B was good with Brooke & Deacon's affair and Sheila's return.

1997 as a whole I'm not to great with. For worst: I know OLTL wasnt too strong around this time as JFP took over l, and ATWT was still in it's mid 90s slump.

I would vote for GH and Days in 1996 as the best soap those years

GH: Clink/Boom, Brenda/Jax/Sonny, Jason/Robin, Carly's intro-not as depressing as 1995

Days-Aremid (better than any 90's story), Paris (silly, but enjoyable), all the triangles really ramped up this year to me.  There wasn't any payoff, but I would still put it above 1997.

Agree. After being off track from Fall 1994 through the first half of 1997, Y&R really rebounded during the second half of 1997, and that rebound lead to the amazing 25th anniversary year. 1998 was the last year I consider Y&R to be truly excellent.

The huge rise of Reilly's Days overlapped w/ Y&R going off track (Fall 1994 through first half of 1997). The week of June 23-27, 1997 Days nearly beat Y&R, there was a 0.3 difference between the two.

Recaps for both shows that week

Outside of silly fangirl John/Marlena stories that I love like the Affair, I think Aremid was easily the best story to come out of JER's era.  It just really involved the entire cast, so many different things were happening, it had so many soapy elements and it was ridiculous, but not campy and silly like most of JER's stories.  It was the perfect blend of outlandish circumstances played very seriously.  The Possession got all the glory, but Aremid was really the best story JER wrote followed by Maison Blanche, which I also loved.

Best of 1986: Another World

In 1986 Another World was really firing on all cylinders with the peak of Cass and Kathleen, the introduction of Reginald Love,  Mary/Marissa and Micheal Hudson.  The return of Mitch, the tragic courtship between Felicia and Zane.

Worst of 1987: Another World

Margaret DePriest had a great first year in 1986 but 1987 took a deep dive downward with Brittany, Catlin, Peter and Kathleen gone and Cass gone for about six months.  Cass lost his spark after Kathleen's "death."  The momentum of The McKinnon family was wasted.  They lured Denise Alexander to the show then quickly write out her family and recast her husband Vince.  Veteran AA character Quinn was brutally killed off for shock value after building her up with Zack.  Plus replacing the majestic theme from 1981.  The introduction of John Hudson and the SORASing of Amanda were bright spots.

@SpoonGreat write-up of '86-'87

I see now why I have had a love/hate relationship with my favorite show at times. I love love loved Cass & Kathleen, Marisa LaSalle & her son Scott. Zane was my all-time favorite love interest for Felicia & I wept copiously at his death. (I went on later to enjoy PT on ATWT as Cal.)

Bringing John Hudson on was a great idea & he had a great life on the show!

@carolineg Speaking of the best of JER, I may hold a minority position because his best to me is by far the '5 siblings of Kristen Blake'. You can't beat Kristen, Susan Banks, Sister Mary Moira, Penelope & of course Tomas. JER has an assist from Eileen Davidson.

For 2002 I would actually say it's a tie between Guiding Light and DAYS. This was also the year that Cwikly and Brash were in charge and had the show firing on all cylinders. The show really wouldn't be able to match that kind of quality after that.

    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).

    • I did some research and the story wrapped up with Eric,a caretaker responsible for Georgina's death who then  tried to do away with Laurie but a vision of Georgina spooked him and he smashed into a mirror, dying of glass wounds. So there was a supernatural element. I wonder if the Brody character in the credits was Eric Brody?
