Massive icons like Aretha Franklin or Donna Summer will certainly continue to get their own threads when they pass, but I figured it might be worth having a place to honor lesser-known celebrities who have left us, especially because we can’t see status updates (which is where a lot of those announcements were made on here previously).

But the great actor Ian Holm has died at 88:

André Braugher Dead: ‘Homicide’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Actor Was 61 – Deadline

This is just awful news. Braugher was always the best part of Brooklyn Nine Nine, in spite of a strong cast - he was genuinely hilarious, had great chemistry with everyone (especially Andy Samberg), and it was refreshing to see an older gay couple on a show who weren't just treated as tokens.

Homicide was where I first saw him, and without him I don't think the show would have lasted half as long as it did. He was electric to watch, and the show took great advantage of that, yet Braugher never let the character become just a conduit for melodrama. He played the everyday moments with Kyle Secor or Ami Brabson (Braugher's real life wife) just as well as the flashy monologues.

Shocking and just awful. What a force of nature.

I guess I should revisit Homicide - I know him best from so many other things.

WOW. I can’t believe this. He was such a commanding presence on Homicide and richly deserved that Emmy.

just read about andre braugher’s passing. of course, there was ‘homicide,’ but i absolutely loved him in ‘men of a certain age,’ ironically, a show that ended long before its time.

If you can, do so.

Frank Pembleton was so dynamic. Still get chills when I remember the character's stroke.

And while the series had seen some decline in quality in later seasons, one exception was "Subway" in Season 6, with an equally-great performance by Vincent D'Onofrio, as a guy who either fell or was pushed (though it seemed the latter) into a subway track and certain to die once his body was freed, as Pembleton stayed with him 'til the end.

That episode got a Peabody Award and a making-of documentary.

Just sad it is not streaming anywhere. The only way to rewatch is buying the series DVD set.

Really?? That's malpractice, same with Knots and Millennium among others.

I do remember the early episodes and the movie, which I really liked.

That's another show which has a lot of music (frankly, too much in later seasons as they used it as a crutch...so much so that they even joked about it themselves in one episode).

The holiday season can be tough enough. Ellen Holly's passing has still got me down, and finding out about André Braugher last evening brought on an awful weight of depression.

I'm sorry to see the news about Shirley Anne Field. @Khan mentioned her stint on SB which is how I came to know her thanks to Gerald Waggett's book of soap opera lists. She swept in and saved the day when Samantha Eggar came to the quick conclusion that the rigorous demands of daytime were not for her. Interesting as Eggar later turned up on AMC as Charlotte Devane. Scenes of Field's mysterious, patrician, veiled Pamela are probably still on YouTube. Marj Dusay would assume the role. May Miss Field rest in peace.

I remember her from her brief stint as Pamela Capwell Conrad on SANTA BARBARA and from a guest appearance she made on "Murder, She Wrote."

Andre Braugher too? Oh man, this is too much loss!
