I’m starting a thread for news on mounting media layoffs as well as criticism of the media and journalism. Stuff that doesn’t necessarily or directly touch on politics.

Dire warnings after BuzzFeed laid off 15 percent of their workforce:

Holy shít.

He'll go somewhere. He founded or co-founded Daily Caller, a very influential hate machine. He can go back there. He can probably write his own ticket. I'm just shocked he, as bootlicker Stetler tweeted, didn't get to say goodbye on his own terms. He was, along with Greg Gutfeld, their biggest draw, by far. I wonder just how frightened the Faux News executives are about this upcoming lawsuit and what else is to come.

Every Fox News personality who people think will survive and thrive outside of Fox, doesn't. I remember when Glenn Beck ruled the right wing world for ten minutes.

This isn't Tucker's first time in the wilderness. But this is shocking since he is the linchpin of their entire network. And any time these guys try to create their own start-ups or make them mainstream they fail. He can't make Daily Caller over into Semafor, for example - for one thing, its laundered, newly-respectable Beltway alum like Kaitlan Collins would run for the hills. So I have no idea what he could possibly do other than stay home and sit on his money, which is probably the best thing for the country. Whatever ousted him must be very dire.

ABC World News Tonight led with the Carlson/Lemon firings.

Not the abortion ban in South Dakota, not the possible second Trump inditement in Georgia, and not the war in Sudan.

Media gossip is fun, but that was just tacky IMHO.

@Vee I remember hearing this was coming, but still surprised it actually happened. I have no tears to cry for Nate Silver, who threw away his reputation for the sake of contrarian and right wing talking points. He and Josh Barro can go bankroll some podcast to nowhere.

I won't be shocked if he turns up on CNN or Semafor or something. There's always a place for the loud wrong white guy who insists he is only 'data-driven' while clucking over liberals fact-checking him about COVID masking protocols. Nate's behavior is their behavior and comforts their priors. It's the same reason the vacuous Brian Stelter is led around by the nose by any contrarian op-ed.

We still face so many heartaches and challenges, but it's hard to overstate how crucial a blow this is.
