As The World Turns Full Episode List

Another thing I've just noticed is that the episode numbers between the confirmed April 27, 1979 and June 17, 1980 episodes line up perfectly.

If it is true that all of these episodes aired, it means that 1979 had no pre-emptions for Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Eve, nor did 1980 have a pre-emption for New Year's Day.

Another thing, though, is that UCLA has episode #6055 in their collection, which according to their info was taped on (Wednesday) August 29, 1979. Following the above logic, that episode would have aired on (Tuesday) September 4, 1979, less than a week after taping. Does anyone know if that sounds about right for those days?

Ok, so I've recently been digging into some historial newspapers to find listings, and I have reason to believe that in 1981 Thanksgiving Friday was NOT pre-empted.

I realize that although I've assumed both Thanksgiving days to have been pre-empted from the early 80s onwards, I have no actual Thanksgiving Friday pre-emptions confirmed before 1986, forcing me to re-think a lot of the info I have on the early 80s. I'll need to do some double checking on the years between 1979 and 1986, which will take some time. I only wish I had found this before real life started to kick back in again, but I'm really happy about this info regardless.

To be continued...

As I mentioned a bit earlier, I have been going over some TV listings in historical newspapers that can be browsed online. I have started a brand new file, in which I am slowly, but surely retracing all of my steps, to ensure that no mistakes are made. That will obviously take some time (but it's also surprisingly fun).

I'm systematically going over some of the major recurring pre-emptions, to see when they started, leading to some surprising and interesting finds. First up: the US Open

For as long as I can remember, the show was always pre-empted on the Monday and Friday of the first full week of September. I knew those pre-emptions date back to the late 80's at least, because nearly all of September 1989 is on YT. I already had those pre-emptions verified from 1987 onwards, with no idea as to how much longer they had been going on. I did find somewhere that CBS aired the US Open from 1968 onwards, but it said nothing about specific dates or pre-emptions.

The newspapers I've found have led to some discoveries. First off, there was a period in which only the Monday was pre-empted, not the Friday. I found the Friday to have been pre-empted from 1982 onwards, while the episode aired regularly in 1981. The Mondays were pre-empted a lot longer. I found it was pre-empted in 1977, but not in 1972. The years in between are a bit more vague, unfortunately, but my current hypothesis is that the Monday episode was pre-empted from 1976 onwards, while it aired in 1975 and before.

Having said that, I'm still trying to get used to reading American TV listings (which, honestly, are quite complicated). I wonder if someone with more experience could shed some light on the clipping below, from the September 5, 1976 edition of a paper called The Journal. As you'll see, it lists As The World Turns in the 1.30 timeslot twice: once with the number 3 in front of it, and once with the number 7 (in black ánd in white) in front of it. I'm assuming these are different stations/affiliates? The latter listing clearly states that the show would be pre-empted on Monday September 6, 1976. The former listing seems to suggest it aired all week.

What I think this means, is that on the the show was pre-empted on some stations/affiliates, while airing regularly on others. If that is the case, I'm assuming I shoudn't count the pre-emption, as a new episode did air (just not on all stations/affiliates). I would be super thankful if someone could help me decipher this.

I was wondering does the above listing include Canadian stations? As far as I know Coronation Street and Crown Court, which are both UK shows were only seen by US audiences if they lived near the Canadian border. This could explain the weirdness with ATWT (or it could be a typo), - also it is possible that the 1:30 pm airing was a rerun or rather a delayed airing of the previous Friday's episode- (of course this tech may not have existed in the mid-70s) to do this, so I can't be certain.

I would assume that ATWT was not shown on some affiliates and viewers either missed it or were able to watch it on another affiliate if they lived in a particular area that could pick up both stations.

I don't believe that stations had a late night showing of a pre-empted episode until years later.

    • I'm not sure I agree with Bernstein's children on that. Bernstein's life and activism here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Bernstein#Social_activism_and_humanitarian_efforts
    • Thursday & Friday's episodes were excellent. The build-up was most definitely worth the wait (2 months). TMG, I can't give her enough accolades. AM, was also absolutely incredible. I think the fallout is going to have a ripple effect. The little clues that have been dropped,  hopefully, will weave seamlessly to reveal even bigger bombshells for the Dupree's and Martin.
    • Thanks, msn drives me nuts on the one hand but on the other hand their headlines appeal to me. And, I just don't do FoxNews.
    • The link doesn't work.  The actual link is this: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/composer-leonard-bernstein-s-children-request-his-music-be-played-in-the-kennedy-center-in-rebuke-to-trump/ar-AA1E7gw5 That's a reprint of a FoxNews article. MSN reprints stuff from many sources. You can tell the source from the logo above the headline on the msn page. The FoxNews article is describing what Leonard Bernstein's children wrote -- as a "letter to the editor" of the New York Times. Instead of reading it filtered through FoxNews, here is the original: "Our Dad, Leonard Bernstein, Would Want His Music Played at the Kennedy Center" https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/opinion/kennedy-center-leonard-bernstein-protest.html Non-paywall archived copy of the same NYTimes letter, without commentary: https://archive.is/QaLqD
    • Might be a long shot, because I can't find a thing online about it, but I was Googling the actress that played Nell Cleary (Frank's cop friend that went through academy and then became cops together during the entire Brent Lawrence storyline). To my surprise, she passed away in 2011, at the very young age of 45. I can't find her obituary or anything online about her passing, but I'm curious, does anyone know what happened? Her IMDB only shows a few other acting gigs post-Guiding Light, so she didn't make a career out of it, but I thought she was a great actress in her role as Cleary. Her name was Mary Peterson.
    • What was Ruth Martin's association to the Thornton family?  I only remember the daughter that dated Tad, and she had a buxom mother.  But, did Ruth date David Thorton before Joe?

Why didn't Steve respect Monica and Jeff's decision?  I get he's Jeff's father, and that's how it came out, but I don't like the ethics of the story. A stranger gets to make life or death decisions over a wife's demands?   I hope Monica secretly never forgave Steve's chauvinism.
    • Question: Jon-Michael Reed's review of 1977 is up in the retro soap section.  It includes a fleeting reference to comedic scenes between Jeanne Cooper and Julianna McCarthy regarding “Kay's would-be beau, Ralph the Plumber”.  Could someone please fill me in will more details? I forgot that Kay and Liz were friendly before Jill stole Kay's husband.  And the thought of Liz playing a comedic scene blows my mind, because I only recall her being dour both in demeanor and wardrobe.
    • I said this on Twitter on Friday when Leslie mentioned Chicago, so perhaps she might be related to one of Anita's bandmates. In addition, Leslie did say she grew up listening to The Articulettes too.
    • There was a scene in the past week or two with Leslie looking at some papers and mementos, which included an invitation or souvenir from Alan's memorial service or funeral -- it was dated as November 2024. Me just guessing but it seems to me that Martin's nightmares about the accident are from something longer ago than November.
