Lorna Raver, actor from Drag Me to Hell, dies at 81

Veteran actor played antagonist in Sam Raimi’s acclaimed horror hit and appeared in The Young and the Restless.

 

Lorna Raver, who played Mrs Ganush in Sam Raimi’s hit horror Drag Me to Hell, has died at the age of 81.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, her death was included in the “in memoriam” section of the Screen Actors Guild’s summer magazine. She died in May.

 

Raver is best known for playing the woman who curses Alison Lohman’s bank teller in Drag Me to Hell, Raimi’s 2009 horror movie. The film premiered at Cannes and made more than $90m at the global box office.

“We just wanted to tell the story of a person who wants to be a good person but who makes a sinful choice out of greed, for their own benefit, and pays the price for it,” Raimi said upon its premiere.

 

It received positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised Raver’s performance. In her review for the New York Times, Jeannette Catsoulis called Raver “gleefully disgusting” while Variety’s Peter Debruge referred to her as a “memorable” villain.

“It was a lot of fun,” Raver said in an interview at the time. “I mean it was gruelling sometimes but it was a lot of fun and Sam is terrific to work with … I was a little apprehensive going into it but I had a wonderful time.”

Raver’s film roles also included the dark 1996 comedy Freeway alongside Reese Witherspoon, the Matt Dillon-led crime thriller Armored and supernatural horror The Caller.

On TV, she was best known for soap The Young and the Restless, where she appeared on 26 episodes. She also had roles in NYPD Blue, Bones, One Tree Hill, Weeds, Nip/Tuck, Star Trek: Voyager and Grey’s Anatomy.

She also appeared in many off-Broadway productions and was a prolific audiobook narrator.

“I can’t say exactly why I wanted to become an actor – the yen was just always there,” Raver said in a 2011 interview. “It was only after I became an actor that I learned what I love about it: I love the chance to live multiple lives and I’m stimulated by the work of developing the discipline, skill and openness one needs in order to inhabit those other lives.”

She retired from acting in 2014.

“I always had this idea that women of a certain age just shouldn’t even bother to try and make it in Hollywood, and I have been pleasantly surprised and blessed by all the work that has come my way,” she said in 2009.

PETERS, Kay L. Kay L. Peters, 83, died May 9, 2025, from respiratory failure. Kay was born and raised in Wooster, Ohio where she began her interest in the arts, dance and debate. While in high school she ran her own dance studio and performed at Canal Fulton Summer Theatre. She was valedictorian of a class of 500. Kay graduated from Northwestern University in 1963 majoring in theatre. She met the love her life, Richard, at college, and they married in 1963. She continued her acting pursuits by performing in dinner theatres while Richard completed his law studies in Chicago. Moving to New York City, she landed a lead role on Broadway, a role on Days of Our Lives, and numerous TV commercials. While in Hollywood she did many guest appearances on Little House on the Prairie, It Takes a Thief, The Bold Ones, and CHiPs. She also did One Life to Live and half a dozen movies. Pausing her career to start a family, having daughters Tara (1971) and Tracy (1973), she had to focus on her early skills of teaching. The seeds were planted for a shift in career to communication skills training. In 1978 Kay became a member of the Board of Directors of Screen Actors Guild and was asked to chair the new Telecommunications Committee. She had to interface with Congress and ultimately testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on copyright issues opposite Ted Turner. Watching others testify cemented her shift to teach communications skills. Kay developed those skills by working for a small boutique firm for several years. Opening her own company in 1994, Kay trained CEOs, scientists, lawyers, doctors, management consultants, IPOs launches, investment bankers, and occasionally children of clients' college bound. Kay worked both domestically and internationally. The same passion Kay had for acting and communication training, she had for her family. She always had time for her daughters and husband. Kay was lifelong Presbyterian and member of the Brick Presbyterian Church. Kay started each morning in saying: This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalms 118:24). Kay is survived by her husband, Richard, their two daughters Tara (Michael) Peterson and Tracy (Jonathon) Herpel, grandchildren, Xander, Beau, Audrey, Alistair, and a sister Joan (Maurice) Moore. There were three judges in the episode who were all members of the Q Continuum, but Lorna Raver was the only one credited.

The Judges were members of the "Q Continuum" and in this episode they were to judge "Q" (nicknamed Q Junior), who was played by Keegan de Lancie, the real-life son of John de Lancie.  John de Lancie played Q on seven different Star Trek series, and of course Eugene Bradford on Days.

Since all members of the Q Continuum have only the name "Q", she is listed on memoryalpha as "Q (Judge) " as a reference point, but her character name is just "Q" like all members of the continuum.

Patricia Barry, the veteran actress of stage and screen who was a standout on such soap operas as Days of Our Lives, All My Children and Guiding Light, has died. She was 93.

Barry, one of the earliest members of Women in Film and a former president of the nonprofit advocacy organization, died peacefully Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles, her publicist announced.

 

In the movies, Barry starred in Send Me No Flowers as the soon-to-be divorced neighbor whom Doris Day suspects is having an affair with her husband Rock Hudson, and she played Glenn Ford’s former mistress in Delbert Mann’s Dear Heart. Both films were released in 1964.

Also that year, Barry appeared in the crime drama Kitten With a Whip (1964), starring Ann-Margret, and starred as Jack Klugman’s spendthrift wife on the short-lived NBC sitcom Harris Against the World.

On NBC’s Days of Our Lives, Barry portrayed Addie Horton Williams, who was married to the character played by Bill Hayes, from 1971-74. She then had a rather interesting turn as Peg English — who raised her adopted daughter Brooke (Julia Barr) while running an international drug cartel under the alias The Cobra — on ABC’s All My Children from 1980-81.

On CBS’ Guiding Light from 1984-87, Barry sparkled as the conniving Southern belle “Miss Sally” Gleason, then played upper-crust matriarch Isabelle Alden on the ABC soap Loving in the ‘90s.

Patricia White was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Davenport, Iowa. Her father was a doctor who cared for rural families, and her mother was the youngest of 14 children. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., where she trained with Maude Adams — who played Peter Pan on Broadway in 1905 — and then studied under Sanford Meisner in New York.

Her first professional role came in a 1944 production of Laughing Water, by Henry and Phoebe Ephron (the parents of Nora and Delia), and she soon appeared on Broadway in Calico Wedding. Later, she was Steve Allen’s co-star in The Pink Elephant. 

She won a Rita Hayworth look-alike contest, was signed by Warner Bros. and made her big-screen debut as a showgirl in Her Kind of Man (1946). She went on to appear in such films as The Beast With Five Fingers (1946); Joan Crawford’s Humoresque (1946); The Man I Love (1947) with Robert Alda and Ida Lupino; The Wreck of the Hesperus (1948); Gene Autry’s Riders of the Whistling Pines (1949); The Tattooed Stranger (1950); and First Love (1954).

She co-starred with William Frawley, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford and other New York Yankees in the spring-training-set Safe at Home! (1962).

Barry starred in two episodes of The Twilight Zone and showed up on such series as Perry Mason, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Thriller, Route 66, My Three Sons, Three’s Company, Dallas, Murder, She Wrote and PBS’ Ghostwriter, where she played a movie star.

An astute businesswoman, Barry leased fully furnished homes to visiting stars, directors and other dignitaries in Los Angeles and New York. Her tenants included Peter Ustinov, Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, Angela Lansbury, Paula Prentiss & Richard Benjamin, Joshua Logan, Don Rickles and Peter Gallagher. George Roy Hill was living in her house on Beverly Drive when he directed his Oscar-winning Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).

Barry, who had a fondness for Yorkshire Terriers, was the recipient of Women in Film’s prestigious Founder’s Award in 1999. In 2004, she starred in Martha Mitchell Speaks, a one-woman show in New York produced by Dorothea Petrie.

Her husband, Philip Barry Jr., who produced plays, films (The Mating Game) and telefilms for ABC, died in 1998. He was the son of playwright Philip Barry, and after her husband’s death, she authorized all productions of Philip Barry plays, including stagings in London of High Society and The Philadelphia Story, starring Kevin Spacey.

Survivors include her daughters Miranda Barry, a former executive in charge of global Sesame Street productions, and Stephanie; son-in-law Mark; grandchildren Alixanne and Hailey; and godchildren Tracy and Stephen.

Memorial services are planned for early 2017 in Los Angeles and New York.

With “A Few More for the Road,” local favorite Alan Sader turns his cancer diagnosis into a gift to the community.

“This is all a gift.”

Local actor Alan Sader, most famous for being the national spokesperson for the former Christian Children’s Fund (now ChildFund International), is talking about the unexpected length of time he’s been alive.

“All of the time that I have now is a gift,” he continues. “And I absolutely have to share it.” Sader’s way of giving back is to offer a weekend of staged readings with some of his favorite local actors called “A Few More for the Road” this weekend at Richmond Triangle Players (RTP).

Initially hit with a cancer diagnosis last March, Sader was doubly rocked a few months later when his oncologist said the cancer had spread from his bladder to his liver.

“It all changed,” he says. “At that point, it became incurable. Not untreatable, but when we talked about how long do I have, his exact words words were: ‘days, weeks, months, a year or a year and a half.’”

Coming on the heels of the death of his wife, artist Ann Chenoweth, who passed away last July, the prognosis threw Sader into a tailspin. “I was probably clinically depressed,” Sader remembers. “All I did, I just did nothing.”

What eventually pulled Sader back from the brink was a call from another local actor, Joe Pabst, asking him to do a play reading at Firehouse Theatre this past March. “I didn’t want to do it, I didn’t want to do anything,” says Sader. “But then I thought, you know, Joe is someone I’ve never been in a show with and I would really love to work with this guy.”

Overcoming his reluctance, he did the reading and found the enthusiastic audience feedback energizing. “I got in the chair and I felt myself coming back,” he says.

He came out of the experience wanting more. “That was the turning point for me,” Sader says. “I started thinking there’s a bunch of other people I’ve never worked with. I thought, ‘I have a purpose now.’”

But as excited as he was, he knew he needed help to fill out his vision. He turned to local actor, playwright and author Irene Ziegler for an assist.

“I had emailed Alan after the reading saying he seemed so happy to be up there,” remembers Ziegler. “He emailed me back saying he had this idea, would I be willing to help. I said ‘yes’ right away of course.”

The original idea was to do something small, perhaps just for friends, but the scope grew quickly. “It eventually turned into what is now a big production with RTP on board, which we’re all thrilled about,” Ziegler says.

Zeigler’s job was to find appropriate scenes to perform while Sader took the lead in inviting actors. “We needed a two-hander with a senior actor and one other actor where the piece was complete to itself,” she says. “I didn’t want to do something that didn’t have a beginning, middle and an end.”

Sader’s biggest challenge was that some people he wanted to invite because he admires them are also loved by local directors. “I’m fantasizing about ‘who do I want’ but what was harder is ‘how do I get them,’” he says. “These are working actors who don’t always have spots open on their calendar.”

The final series of scenes will pair Sader with Joe Inscoe, Eva DeVirgilis, Dean Knight, Erich Appleby, actor / director Jan Powell and Ziegler.

Saved by theater

Sader himself had never expected to be a working actor. He did theater while attending Duke University but just for fun, originally planning to be a doctor like his father. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and a factory worker before starting a dinner theater in Norfolk.

His big break came when he joined the cast of the soap opera “Another Life,” which was filmed in Virginia Beach starting in 1981. Parts in other TV shows and films followed before he was called on to be the face – and famously sonorous voice – of Christian Children’s Fund in 1992.

He appeared in commercials for the Richmond-based nonprofit for decades, one as recently as 2016, while also repping local brands like Farm Fresh and Haynes Furniture.

Sader has made regular appearances on local stages, playing iconic roles like “King Lear” in 2011 and most recently starring in “Uncle Vanya” for Richmond Shakespeare in 2023.

The best news related to this upcoming production is that Sader’s health has dramatically improved. “I’m on an immunotherapy drug that is kind of a miracle,” he says. “It’s been extending people’s lives by months and years and that’s what’s happening with me. I actually feel good. I’m weak but gaining strength back.”

In addition to the treatment he’s receiving, Sader says his unexpected vocation has ended up reviving him.

“This thing that was given to me, that allowed me to live my life as an actor, came back, grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and said, ‘you’re not done yet.’

“Theater and acting, I can say almost literally, it’s saved my life.”
