ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years

Hmmm... interesting. Very interesting. I do wish Hulu would re-up General Hospital: Night Shift, or even see ABC bring it back as a limited-summer run event for primetime.

I also think it would have been interesting if Port Charles had been more of the mob-centric spinoff for General Hospital.

Was this discussed?

Script Proposals, Treatments, Pitches for Storylines, Show Bibles

Dissatisfied with Capitol, CBS announced the cancellation of it as of Dec. 1986, with a last air date of Mar. 1987. Solicited proposals for new show to replace.

Paul Rauch, a more satirical serial called Grosse Pointe about a wealthy, dysfunctional blue blood family.

Claire Labine, entitled Celebration, middle class family living in the suburbs of Cleveland, somewhat like ATWT and/or AW but with an 80s twist to bring it current.

And when the nbc affiliates chose Sunset Beach, was the Stephen J. Cannell soap discussed?

I'd imagine it would be like turning Peyton Place into a soap - ie pick liberally between elements that they want to have on the show, while entirely dismissing others and creating something that's essentially something new under a recognizeable name.

A January 1979 soap magazine mentions ABC creating a new soap written by Ann Marcus, following the Y&R formula as dealing with the problems of the young, with "lots of restlessness going on in this California beach town."

I was reading a book & came upon an offhand remark that NBC went with BEACH instead of a DOOL spin-off. (I recall NBC holding a competition for show proposals & then ended up letting the affiliates make the choice & they chose the Aaron Spelling beach soap, which became SUNSET BEACH.) Other contenders: a Stephen J. Cannell lawyer soap, a Claire Labine soap & there were 4 altogether & that makes up 4. The Labine soap was to have been set in lower Manhattan & involve two families living right next door to each other, one black family & one white family, close friends & I think it had a name, a working title, Heart & Soul.

That would have been splendid! Their strongest point of interest then was two things: in owning part of any new soap they got into and the other shoe drops, that any new soap they got into have international possibilities. Besides being a Pete Lemay nut & a Donna Swajeski nut I am wholly taken with Claire Labine, so that would have been my personal pick. Of the different DOOL spin-offs mentioned over the years, I've no idea which one was up for this.

Found this in the old thread

In August 78, ABC officially announced it was developing a new soap 'The Best Years' from Ann Marcus. It involved the love triangles of parents, students and teachers of a Southern California beachtown high school community. Headwriters will be Joyce Perry and Ray Goldstone, all then working on Days.

Where would ABC have placed this? All of it's soaps were doing well at this stage. Was it 30 min or 60?

Maybe 4pm to replace Edge?

Or late morning/midday?

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).
