September 6, 201411 yr Member I think it's simpler than that. Given the fact that Nina Tassler herself called him and asked him to return, it's obvious that CBS recognizes that Shemar is valuable to them so they gave him what he wanted. He wasn't a member of the cast asking for special favors, he's a primetime star they brought back for a ratings boost and they treated him as such. I hadn't looked at it that way, marceline. Good point.
September 6, 201411 yr Member Shemar bad mouthed Y&R for years but now that they need a ratings boost suddenly everything is ok & Vicki is far from the first actor of color to admit to significantly tweaking dialogue (Debbi & Darnell did so on AMC for many years) or protested against or advocated for changes to the script so their characters motivations make sense (Ellen Holly, Keith Hamilton Cobb & Tonya Lee Williams) without getting paid. Point(s) taken, DeeeDee. I remain confused, though, by your previous comment. If you weren't talking about VR, who WERE you talking about?
September 6, 201411 yr Member I believe anytime you write for people that you never have daily contact with, Helping writing the scripts are always needed. On the other hand, some writers believe actors need to speak the lines and do the actions as written. (I'm not disagreeing with you, just offering another p.o.v.)
September 6, 201411 yr Member I remain confused, though, by your previous comment. There's nothing to be confused about. The point I was making was that more actors of color were admitting to (in print) changing their dialogue (without getting paid) when that isn't their job. It highlights how problematically white Daytime still is & how flippant many viewers are to the struggles of minority actors in a hermetic industry that devalues their talent, possesses undue expectations of their labor & refuses to change its historically oppressive status quo. But the writers have to realize that if you want an character to be relatable to the viewers they suppose to represent, they actors just can't act. The script got to be relatable too.

Ah, okay. When you asked where you had heard Shemar's comments before, I thought you were talking about someone in particular. And for God's sake, how did Kay Alden burn her bridges with SONY? Inquiring minds still want to know, lol. But the writers have to realize that if you want an character to be relatable to the viewers they suppose to represent, they actors just can't act. The script got to be relatable too. Agree.
September 8, 201411 yr Member Sara Bibel was asked about that on one of the Daytime Confidential podcasts and she simply said that once Lynn Latham got all the Bell people out there was no going back for them. I don't know why, but the industry has never looked at Y&R and B&B and wanted to emulate that despite their success. If you look at it, most of those writers couldn't even get touched by other soaps, Bibel worked briefly for AMC and was fired and then Kay Alden was passed over for all 3 ABC soaps which makes no sense. These are people who trained over a daytime legend, yet it doesn't matter. Alden had YEARS of HW experience and you mean Ken Corday didn't think to call her up? It really baffles me and then none of the staff members are ever given a chance as the HW position. It's like being attached to the Bell's is a bad thing.
September 8, 201411 yr Member I'm not saying a word. EXCEPT... If our babydaddy and KSJ were allowed to change their dialogue before taping, and VR wasn't, then might mean one of two things: 1. Even Black men get more preferential treatment than Black women in this business. 2. VR was just a PITA whose requests for changes to scripts and storylines plain went unneeded. (Or perhaps it was a little of both?) Victoria has said many times that Bill Bell collaborated with her and allowed her to change dialogue and things like that. It's pretty obvious now that I'm watching her early episodes on YouTube. Her stuff is too diverse and different from what everyone else is doing. I think that may have been a reason she was upset they never let her write for the show officially, since we all know she'd been doing it behind the scenes for years.
September 9, 201411 yr Member ^I hope so. I'm so bummed I cannot watch live tomorrow. *weeps* I've been wanting Shemar back on the show for so many years. Eddie "Make me a sandwich" Winslow was not my Malcolm. And, the Winters family just isn't right without him. Neil needs his brother for many many reasons. The animosity and tension between them being a great one. Plus, Kristoff and Shemar are wonderful on screen together.

But Shemar won't commit to Y&R full time so I say time for a REAL recast! Edited September 9, 201411 yr by ajsp35801

September 9, 201411 yr Member If they decide to bring back Malcolm permanently, I'm sure JFP will put in a call to Monti Sharp or Kevin Mambo.
