The show is doing just fine. Fox is beyond thrilled with the show. There was just an article somewhere (Hollywood Reporter?) with the dude from Fox singing the show's praises.

It got 4.6 million viewers in adults 18-49. It ROSE again.

I agree it will probably level out, that's what a show does. But ratings continue to defy expectations and RISE. Not sure why anyone is at all worried about the show right now.

Cookie in the cab with the driver was perfection. LMAO. I forgot to mention how much I loved that. "You black like me". DEAD.

Hakeem is the one who comes off like a child. I laugh everytime he tries to act like a thug. I did feel for him after he saw the video of homegirl making out with the model.

Jamal is very rootable but I do sometimes roll my eyes when he tries to be all big and bad.

It doesn't help these two look every bit their young age, but it's also interesting to watch them evolve and try and grow and get out of their father's shadow.

I don't think Andre was truly concerned about Jamal getting shot or not. TBH. He knows how to turn it on and off. I'm ready for him to completely lose his mind. He will. I'm already waiting for him to go batshit and shoot up Empire or something. He's a ticking time bomb and the actor is doing a good job portraying it.

Cookie and Lucious were dripping with sex last night. I'm so ready for them to !@#$%^&*] like rabbits.

Very good point....Lee Daniels should go to therapy...it's much cheaper and doesn't involve making a character look foolish just for the sake of it. Like it was random as hell for Jamal to assault Hakeem like that. And frankly it all just happened to fast. This is what? Like episode 5? Barely anything has occurred for Jamal to even begin to SUSPECT that Hakeem is no long on his side.

I found the whole thing laughable. I liked them showing great at business Cookie is but they ruined it with the whole shoddy ghetto recording studio mess. I also got some weird vibes from the guy who was charging Jamal for the time. Like uhh he was about to turn out Jamal for some more studio time (sorry I had to say it). Glad they didn't go that seedy route but they did say this show would portray the bad side to hip hop as well and lets not pretend that some of these artists do some desperate things to get in the studio....

I will admit I grinned like a clown when Cookie walked in and saw the fruits of her son's labor...:)

LOL...da thirst is real.....

I see the spark between Cookie and Lucius but it doesn't feel that sexual to me. More like friends to be honest but maybe they'll steam it up more.

I hope they don't go too far with Andre. He can go batsh*t crazy and not be gone from the show. The actor is too good and too damn fine to be wasted like that. But I do love that little unhinged look in his eye. That look of panic/desperation with his mom in last nights episode was priceless. If it weren't for the fact that it's Cookie and that his mother I truly believe he would have snapped and gotten a little aggressive physically with her....

Lee Daniels is not the showrunner. That's Ilene Chaiken. So he's not responsible for Jamal. Surprisingly enough, people started complaining for Jamal as soon as Daniels wasn't writing an episode. Hmmmm.

And I don't understand AT ALL what's random about Jamal punching Hakeem. So we're gonna judge him for getting upset because he JUSTLY thought, he was SET UP, to think that Hakeem had sent his shady friends to terrorize him? He ought to have beaten his ass to a pulp! But, yeah, Lucious shoots his friend in the eye but Jamal is just way too much punching Hakeem on the stomach! Girl, BYE!

I don't understand the issue with Jamal punching Hakeem. They're brothers. Brothers fight. Add in the pressure from Cookie and Lucious, Hakeem finding out about Tiana, and Jamal nearly getting shot and it makes sense that something would jump off.

My only issue - which others have already pointed out - is pacing. It would've worked better for this to churn for another episode or two but the idea that they would end up coming to blows makes sense.

I'm only up to Season 3 of THE L WORD but there was a sharp decline between season 1 and 2 in how good the show was and, very importantly, how smart it was. It seemed really dumbed down once it returned. I hope Daniels & Strong keep a tight leash over this one, otherwise I'm calling it now, Season 2 will be a mess!

Absolutely! There's nothing new about that, especially not in soaps.

As for the pacing... I am willing to overlook this, for now, because they had a short episode order. I hope the next season is a full 22-episode one and they feel free to let things breathe.

NO soap EVER does well (long-term) with fast pacing. It just doesn't work.

Thank you!

In the context of what happened, Jamal was 100% justified in punching Hakeem in the gut. There was a shoving match. Things were about to get real. LOL at "assaulting Hakeem". They're brothers and it was a punch in the gut. Jamal didn't beat him to a pulp.

The ending WAS amazing. So many good moments last night. I loved how she realized she was wrong, made that call and them bam the hit happens. Sooo good. I also like how each episode usually ends with Cookie and Lucious. I don't see "friendship chemistry" at all but !@#$%^&*] me now eyes. Every. Time.

I guess there was some genuine concern with Andre, it's just so hard to grasp whether he gives a damn because he always acts so cold and looks so nastily at his brothers. I'm sure he doesn't really WANT Jamal shot or hurt but I felt like he was acting all surprised and concerned when Hakeem called him. I guess the actor's doing a good job when I'm not sure whether he's sincere or just a cold SOB wanting to take down his family and run the company.

I'm fine with the pacing, smaller elements that make up part of the overall story are moving along quickly and there isn't a need to dwell on much. The stories that need to be paced slower, like Bunkie's shooting and Cookie's federal testimony, as well as the overall rivalry between the brothers, are being paced accordingly.

    • For years I did NOT go by Laura's opinion of Luke. Today I certainly do not go by Laura's opinion that Sonny somehow is good for Port Charles. Actually when it comes to being a judge of people's characters, and the issue is Laura, I just remember Esme.
    • Good point. It would provide some conflict with Jack. As much as I am not interested in Claire, I don't find it difficult to understand why she might be a bit reluctant  to commit to a guy who has already been divorced twice or is  3 times?before he is 30. That's a natural obstacle that Claire would be hesitant about. But in GC every relationship is true love and various past marriages are forgotten.

I’m in NYC, and I can’t help but wonder if NYC prosecutors, politicians, etc. ever felt the way that Laura did, back in the 80s-90s when they were taking down the mob.  “Oooh, don’t put John Gotti in prison. The guy who comes in after him might be worse”
    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron/Jamey-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31. I like that.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

    • Hello to everybody!

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.
