I think it was Worldvision that handled the P&G soaps at that time. Definitely a distribution company.

AW had previously aired on the 9 network in Oz in the 70's at 11am at one point for several years.

It was also very common for networks here to have package deals with companies that included several shows and were effectively forced on them. So it is impossible to know. Network 10 that aired it may have done a deal with the distributor, not P&G, that included big shows as well as others they were trying to get into international markets.

I remember in early 90s, in Croatia we suddenly had Guiding Light, As the World Turns and Edge of Night all airing for one year. I guess our main TV Network at the time bought the package of the soaps for one year. Unfortunately, I guess none of them caught on with the audience, because I am pretty sure they only aired for 1 year.

Exciting news! The 6 missing weeks from 1979 have been tracked down!  Two weeks of new data has been posted in the 1970's thread. The other 4 weeks are yet to be delivered, but expect them soon!

Update on data: Fans will now have full weekly data (Nielsen ratings & preemptions) available from 9/4/78-10/11/87 except for 2 weeks: 12/25/78-12/29/78 and 8/24/81-8/28/81.

Is there a story to go with the discovery?!! I admit I am fascinated with your process. Finding 6 previously missing weeks from 44 years in the past is so freaking amazing!

The word's been out asking if anyone has the Nielsen books that were still needed. So, someone responded this week that they did have the needed 1979 issues. Simple as that!

That's just fantastic!

On a DAYS question, wasn't Friday's episode the longest we've ever had? 52 minutes?

As we get into 1983, we'll see how these pivotal events play out in the ratings:

Y&R finishing touches on the transition.

Guiding Light EP change to Gail Kobe and HW change to Pamela Long.

Supercouple-era Days starts.

I subtracted the Suzanne Rogers tribute at the end, which wasn't technically part of the episode, but even with that, at 49:57, yes it is the longest episode.

By the end of 1982 we saw four tiers form among the soaps.

Top: General Hospital, All My Children, One Life to Live

Second: Y&R, As the World Turns, Guiding Light

Third: Capitol, Ryan's Hope, Days

Bottom: Another World, The Edge of Night, Texas, Search for Tomorrow, The Doctors

Hi.

I think Y and R should be in the Top Tier. Restless would beat or tie OLTL in 1982

We'll also see if there's any truth to L. Virginia Browne's claim that she brought Guiding Light up 2 full ratings points -- from 8th place to 3rd place -- during her short stint.

1982/83 seasonal ratings has Y&R in 4th, behind the ABC big three. 1983/84 seasonal ratings Y&R moves past One Life to Live for 3rd. Sometime during 1983 we'll see Y&R move ahead of One Life to Live.
