Probably the closest to American soaps that UK soaps got for many years, right down to the long-suffering matriarch, Meg. I tend to think of the show as a British version of the early years of Search for Tomorrow.

I wish I could see those 70s episodes again.

(the show was more daring and diverse than it gets credit for)

Carl, several years back Network DVD released a bunch of episodes from the early years as a part of their "Archives" collection. I want to say the released a good eight months worth of consecutive episodes from 1977-1978 or 1978-1979. The set is pretty pricey, but I did see one go on ebay for about $100, which is incredibly reasonable given what others are asking for it.

Yes, I have seen some of those. They're too expensive for me but hopefully someday I may find some.

I get very defensive of Crossroads because the show is mostly remembered for having cheap sets, when they actually took some huge risks (they paralyzed Meg's son and never gave him a miracle recovery; they had minority characters in the mid/late 70s, long before it was common on other soaps).

Was this a bad soap? I noticed on IMDB that it scored a 3.3 which is surprising. Of course only 164 voters voted but still that is a low score. It looks like a lot of these episodes are on Youtube so I'll have to check some out. I heard Susan Hanson was a good actor. This is one of the only UK soaps that I haven't watched anything from yet.

Is that IMDB rating for original Crossroads or the reboot versions or just the show generally?

Original Crossroads from what I've gathered used to get slated for having wobbly sets and being so bad it's good. The reboot version in 2001(?) was dull and didn't get good reviews, but the revamp of the reboot in 2003 was an horrendously cheap-looking mess. I think the reboots tarnished the original a lot.

I didn't know she was still alive.

As mentioned a few times in the article (albeit not about Crossroads), she wrote a lot of groundbreaking work. She did that on Crossroads too, especially with Sandy. I wish that were remembered more, instead of focus on wobbly sets.

Lost episodes of classic soap Crossroads rediscovered in vault after 50 years

The scenes, to be shown at an event for the first time in 50 years this weekend, were believed to have been wiped shortly after first airing in the 1960s

Episodes of Crossroads lost for more than 50 years have been discovered in a vault.

And experts say the footage shows the soap’s reputation for wobbly sets and hammy acting is unfair.

Crossroads ran for 24 years from 1964 and at its peak had 15 million viewers. Its stars included Noele Gordon, Ronald Allen, Susan Hanson and Sue Nicholls, who plays Coronation Street’s Audrey Roberts.

Other plots are set in and around Crossroads Motel and also follow the staff as they travel to Tunisia for a holiday while the building is repaired after it was blown up by a Second World War bomb.

The tapes were found among 32 cans in an ITV vault in Leeds earlier this year by Kaleidoscope, an organisation that specialises in locating missing TV film.

Soap expert John Drury said: “This footage shows the ambition of the producers to produce an entertaining and engaging programme that still stands up well against the soaps of today.”

The scenes will be shown for the first time in half a century this weekend at an event in Birmingham.

    • I totally understand your sloths concern about it and I agree with you. Let’s hope the show plays it’s cards right.    Further comments about the last few episodes: - I liked that one of the attendees was filming the scene. That’s realistic. I wonder if the writers will follow up with that.  - Martin and Smitty trying to drag Leslie out was very heteronormative, so perfectly in line with them two as characters lol.    As for the future: it’s obvious the Duprees will come to accept Eva one way or another, but the rivalry with Kay should be here for the long term   On the topic of acting: the only bad actors I’m seeing are Ted and Derek. Tomas hasn’t proven to be either good or bad, so far, but he’s certainly mediocre and uncharismatic. He sucks the energy out of the scenes and I don’t see any couple of women ever vying for him.
    • I’m trying to think which actors VW were working with at the time, and none of them had been there for a while. Even like Mac and Ada didn’t have that big of a part in Rachel’s storyline.  And Jamie was involved with all that movie stuff.
    • Brooke did ads before ATWT too. That probably helped get her the job. After ATWT she seemed to branch more into hosting, along with ads.  I think I saw Kelley in an ad or two, but you're right she wasn't on as much.
    •   Thanks for sharing these. I wonder if Charles might have been in the running for Adam. I know Preacher was a bit of a bad boy at times on EON, but Neal seemed to be a step down, and Robert Lupone had played a similar part on AMC. Given the huge cast turnover at this point I wonder who thought they had been there long enough to go.  Laura Malone/Chris Rich would get a remote within the next year.
    • Interesting.  It seems to allude to that statement that Warren Burton made around that time about some AW actors getting special treatment.  I wonder who was resentful about not getting to go.
    • Good morning, boys!  I figured that it was time that our Gio was introduced into the hotness thread

    • Under all of Madonna's social media today there is this wave of negative, toxic, absurd comments by Lady Gaga fans telling her how Gaga surpassed her in concert in Copacabana. I mean... Who the hell cares? Why are these fan communities so freaking toxic??? I'm sure Madonna doesn't care... But still. Have some respect for M. Leave her social media alone. Go cheer Gaga and be happy. Why come and spew hate on M??? Crazy world.
    • FYI, again, Ruth/Letitia is not in either of these 2 episodes. So that concludes the 4 episodes I had from Nov. 1983. I don't have the October episodes.
    • Eddie has begun uploading the 1990 episodes. I'm so happy about that. I was mindfully taking a break till there's plenty of episodes I can binge watch when I feel like it. Now that 1989 is complete... I can't wait to press play on February 1989 and resume where I left off.
