Out of the current new shows? Yes I would.

I really love the New Yorker's recent TV critic Emily Nussbaum (she wrote a great retort to the NYTimes who went on about how Game of Thrones wouldn't appeal to any female) and this is her take, which pretty much matches up with mine--the complaints and all. Read it and decide for yourself http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/television/2013/10/07/131007crte_television_nussbaum

And while I don't trust the majority of TV critics (and I admit, the old TV critic at the NewYorker was a particular snob) it has a very high meta score. http://www.metacritic.com/tv/masters-of-sex 85% positive Like Emily says it seems to straddle the titillating True Blood style cable dramas and the more chaste Six Feet Under ones (if those can be called chaste.)

I liked the pilot a lot, but lost interest in the second episode. The show just seems so... redundant (for lack of a better word). It's like "oooh, we're talking about sex when it was taboo" and it's like, who cares?

Lizzy Caplan is the standout actress and character. Everybody else seems so cartoony and one-dimensional. It is well produced though.

Maybe I should give it another chance, but I reckon I would still be bored.

Oh, I know zilch about comics but I know what you mean - it's always annoying when they screw up the authenticity of a period setting , even with something minor.

I didn't watch last night but someone told me that it is turning into a semi-procedural with a medical case of a week. So not going to give this a second chance then - if I wanted such nonsense, I'd guzzle down whatever rubbish CBS is serving up.

I thought it was ok. I've only watched the first episode. I'm interested in Johnson enough to watch another episode. I take it that it really is Master's wife who is infertile? I just can't believe he would put her through all these procedures if he had a low sperm count.

I haven't seen anymore epsiodes but your Six Feet Under comparison sounds about right from what I could make out from just 2 episodes. I guess calling it a semi-procedural is exaggerated then.

Glad you enjoying it though. I concur with the earlier comments that it isn't a very good year of freshmen shows, and this extends to non-broadcast as well surprisinglyt (for me).

    • Someone has been posted episodes from 1994 and Jill Powell (Marcy Lafferty) has a hot storyline right now. Just googled her and in real-life she is now openly out as a Lesbian with a transgender son.
    • Did anyone else notice that DAYS has not been in the Top 10 most streamed shows on Peacock this week??? I find that very strange considering how good the show has been, especially this week.
    • Cast changes in 2025 (so far, not much has happened): GZSZ Pauline Afaja (Flo Kästner) departed on March 10th, 2025. She had only been on the show for about a year. Flo as a character never really clicked with the audience. Her final storyline involved her catching feelings for the much older Nina Reichelt Klee Ahrens Navarro out of the blue – while she was in a relationship with the wheelchair-bound Jonas Seefeld. Onno Buß joined the cast as Julian Kaltenbach on January 31st, 2025. Julian is Matilda's twin brother ... and another illegitimate child of Jo Gerner. Charlott Reschke, who had played Johanna Flemming on a recurring basis from 2015 to 2024, returned at the end of May. The 20-year old actress has now been placed on contract. Last week on GZSZ:

    • Not to ramble too far off topic but it happens a lot with comics too, especially only wanting to keep cheap talent around and pushing out creative voices. There are some patches where creatives can go to start their own worlds...wish that was true with soaps, but who knows, maybe it can happen someday. I never thought we'd get a new soap this year.
    • Very true & also at least in the case of stand-out HWs, it is fraught with exhaustion & burnout.
    • Plus we are never going to have a Shonda Rhimes, a Dick Wolf, or a Chuck Lorre of daytime -- a single brilliant person who could come in and change the genre -- because Shonda, Dick, or Chuck would only be able to work on one soap opera at a time, not three or four at the same time as they do in primetime.  As long as TPTB insist on the 60-minute format, we will never have another super influential individual like Phillips, Nixon, or Bell.  They simply would never have time to do more than one soap opera at a time and that would stifle their influence overall. Thanks. So maybe this is happening to some degree in other entertainment genres.  I don't keep up with the particular franchises you mentioned, so I was unaware.  I appreciate your perspective.
