GH/OLTL: Ice Princess...or Eterna?

Both stories are epic science fiction in the world of soaps...which would did you enjoy more? Despite "General Hospital"'s fame at the time, is the Ice Princess story line better than "One Life"'s tale of an underground city?

Tough one. I liked the ice princess at the time but if I had known the introduction of the Cassadines would result in the show still having their brand of sadism and scifi decades later...the original group of Cassadines was about all I could tolerate and even then for a short time. But it was more action-adventure oriented than Eterna and it did really capitalize on L & L's extreme popularity at the time, plus Robert Scorpio's growing popularity. It also introduced Tiffany Hill.

I didn't hate Eterna but I had really liked the 1888 Old West story so this one was kind of a letdown after that. Plus it was yet another of what was going to be many rewrites of Viki's DID, the first of her "forgotten" pregnancies. It involved too many characters getting trapped who really didn't have much to do with the actual story.

I think, overall, ice princess was better written because, as I mentioned, it really capitalized on who/what was popular on the show at the time. I think it really fed into what the audience wanted to see. Eterna, on the other hand, trapped a bunch of people underground, some of whom were peripheral to the story and some of whom viewers didn't care all that much about. Plus it involved throwing the romantic spoiler of Roger Gordon into the popular Clint & Viki pairing.

Ice Princess was a big hit with fans, although some like Michael Logan claim the story ruined soaps in the long run, as it showed them that sensationalism sells.

Eterna was seen as a flop and the last gasp of the OTT Paul Rauch era.

I tend to prefer Eterna, because I actually cared about most of the people involved, whereas I simply do not give a [!@#$%^&*] about Luke or Laura, Robert is OK, and Tiffany, who I am fond of, was mostly a supporting figure. I also loved the scene where Viki learned Megan was her daughter.

Neither.

Storylines such as these are one reason daytime soaps are the laughingstock of the industry. If you have good writing, you don't need wacky sci-fi plots to entice viewers.

Yeah, soaps are suppose to be an escape, but I rather 'escape' by watching a rich bitch act all fabulous than someone trying to freeze the planet or an underground city. rolleyes.gif
