Connor Paolo was an incredibly talented young actor - but although they had him move to Llanview, they never put his character, Travis, on contract, and he was in demand then as well as now so off he went. Connor has since done a load of films and television, including playing the gay kid on Gossip Girl; he is now uncomfortably attractive on Revenge.

IIRC, he went off to summer camp, met someone and dumped her by phone or email. The sad thing is he was probably Starr's best love interest ever, and they were both like 12.
