Here are some examples of how close Britt and Spencer were:
In 2015, when Britt was on the run, she made a surprise, secretive visit to Port Charles. She saw two people, both of whom she trusted not to turn her in: Brad and Spencer. She proclaimed to Spencer: "You are Spencer Stephan Nikolosovich Cassadine!!" She remembered his full legal name years after she and Nikolas had broken up.
When Sonny and Jason found Britt in late 2017, the first thing she asked Sonny was "how is Spencer?"
When Britt saw Nikolas in 2020, after he came back from the dead, she slapped him for abandoning his son and told him that she was in touch with Spencer.
When Spencer returned to Port Charles, he and Britt and many scenes together, including at the Metro Court pool immediately after he returned. He tried to get Britt to buy him a gin and tonic, but she acted like a parent and got him an iced tea.
At one point, Spencer asked Britt if he could stay with her. She said no, but not because he was asking too much of her, or she preferred not to be troubled by putting him up. There was a reason related to his issues at the time, surrounding the problems he was having with his family. The point is, it didn't seem inappropriate or out-of-bounds to him to ask if he could live in her home.
When Spencer was trying to figure out what Esme had done to Trina, he went to Britt for help. He asked her about medication that he had found. Britt assumed that Esme was taking the drugs and prepared to get involved in the situation. Spencer backed her off with some harsh words, ones that I remember thinking were painful for her to hear, coming from him. He was trying to keep her safe from Esme and away from the whole mess. There was a scene, I can't remember with whom, where Britt talked about how hurtful it was to be spoken to like that by Spencer, given their history.
Spencer later needed a favor from Britt, related to dealing with the Esme situation. He asked her for help, even before he was able to explain to her that he didn't mean the things that he said to her. Britt agreed to help him, even without knowing that he didn't really want to say all the cold words that he had spoken.
Spencer eventually explained to her what happened and apologized. She seemed relieved to her to hear his explanation.
Spencer was at Britt's party the night before she was believed to have been killed by the hook. They showed two pictures of them together in the video highlight reel for her birthday.
Spencer was absolutely devasted when Sonny told him that Britt had been killed by the hook. Cameron comforted him. Sonny later told Nina and Ava about how hard a time Spencer was having after losing Britt.
When Spencer was in danger during the Greenland story, Liesl talked about how she wanted to help him, and referred to him as the boy that her Britta loved so much.
I honestly don't see how anyone can remember them as not having been close, or their relationship not having been an important part of her character's story. It seems clear that CVE is determined to portray her character in a certain way, and her history with Spencer interferes with that.
The description that is being given by some posters here about the Spencer/Britt connection sounds more like the relationship that he shared with Hayden. They had some tender moments when she was married to Nikolas, and they were happy to see each other again a couple years later when she took him and Cameron out for the day. Years later, an older Spencer was disgusted when he learned that Nikolas tried to kill her, and he mentioned the warm feelings that he had for her as a stepmother. But it wouldn't have been accurate to say that they were super close and had a long-standing bond with one another. Britt and Spencer, on the other hand, were and did.
