HOLIDAY MIRACLE: Prospect Park Back On Track To Revive AMC and OLTL

  • Member

WTF!!!!!

EXCLUSIVE: Here is a great holiday gift for soap fans: I’ve learned that Prospect Park has revived its plan to continue cancelled ABC daytime dramas All My Children and One Life To Live online. I hear the company behind USA hit Royal Pains has inked deals with SAG-AFTRA and DGA for the soaps’ production, eyed to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

So happy they have apparently got Debbi Morgan signed on. If this doesn't happen now, I'm really going to be pissed. I missed the Hubbards the most, next to the Martins.

I just hope they let Agnes have some say on the shows when it comes to stories.

Maybe it's putting too much faith in Nixon, and while apparently she's a force to be reckoned with behind the scenes (excepting Pratt and a few other eras, apparently she would have final approval of storylines on AMC and her word went, even when she wasn't directly involved--which means she prob agreed to some awful stories lol but). I doubt she would be making statements if she wasn't at least told she would be having input.

I could easily except the Hubbards as Pine Valley's new strong hold if they blended with the Martins a little bit. Maybe Paul Martin has a Grand Daughter that can fall for Frankie if Randi doesn't comeback!!

That being said I wouldn't want the Martins to be phased out COMPLETELY.

I feel like people are making a lot of generalizations and assumptions about what viewers will or won't accept. They won't watch on computer, they won't watch if there's a break, etc... IMO, PP needs to be more concerned with attracting new viewers rather than trying to placate old ones.

Personally, my comments on the matter is based on the numerous comments I've seen posted on my articles on the website, our facebook page and Twitter. People using the technology they claim they refuse to use to watch their soaps. Do I personally agree with them? No, I'm personally fine with whatever route they (Prospect Park) go as I'm equipped and I watch most shows online now anyway. I watch TV via my iPhone, iPad, XBOX, PS3 or Mac. It's the one's bitching about the technology that has me saying what I said before.

I don';t understand why DM keeps singing on to soaps. Why stick to a dying industry when you can get primetime and movie roles? She lost the opportunity at a role in a Denzel movie to have a crappy run on Y&R.

For instance I picked up this weeks ABC Soaps In Depth and the Sara Palin article talked about how she was a huge fan of AMC and even name one of her daughters Bianca after Bianca from All My Children and talked about how excited she was to meet Susan Lucci and that even though she was a busy woman she always made time to watch AMC. These shows had celebrities who loved them. I think rebooting them could be a good thing.

God I wish I had never heard that Palin was an AMC fan. *cry*

I agree that they should have made their own statement. That said, I don't think Nixon would ever be easily persuaded to be the mouthpiece for anyone. Remember too, she released her statement to facebook fans saying she wanted to tell them first--I don't think the official statement is even actually out to press (of course they all picked up on her FB statement anyway, so that's a moot point).

She posted the statement on her official website, which is where she "releases" things to the press, apparently. That's where I was first alerted to it.

Am I crazy for thinking PP should have purchased the rights to one or the other instead of attempting (twice) to get them both back in production?

Yes and no. I think in a way it does make sense to have got them as a package deal. I think they also already saw some of the flack they got last year when rumours circulated they might only go with One Life, etc--but money wise and also trying out something new it would make sense to go with one first.

Oh I agree with you. I've seen numerous articles about how television viewing has changed. People are dropping cable left and right because it's easier and cheaper to stream with Netflix, Hulu and other services.

Even if the shows relaunched when they were supposed to they still wouldn't have known who was going to show up or not and they wouldn't have known until December. I think they created a "Tentative" bible that would give an idea of how the story was going to move forward. Also, I don't understand how people thought the show would pick up the day after the shooting because several months would have passed so they could easily say moved away.

I agree with all of that.

I think PP should have went for one, then seen if it was successful or not then picked up the other

Actors are signing on (again) without an official HW or story bible in place? And even if they have a HW in place already, he or she can't lay out any story until they know for certain who's signing on and who isn't? And it all has to be done by the end of the month? I'm sorry, but that is NOT how you create (or recreate), develop, write and produce a drama series, not even one which had been on the air already for over four decades.

PP was better off signing Susan Lucci to an exclusive production deal and then hiring someone to develop for her a brand-spanking-new series that either continued the Erica Kane story (in a new location, with new characters) or allowed her to create an altogether new character.

THIS!!!

If they don't come to an agreement with WGA and PP is somewhat successful do you think the WGA would reconsider? Could they want to see if they can pull this off first?

What I was told, for whatever it's worth, is the WGA is actually very interested. However they are also being quite difficult and holding their ground (this was last year) because they see whatever decisions they make (about pay, etc) could and probably would set the precedent for future "cyber" shows--that's one reason why they're being so difficult (well and unions often are difficult--as much as I am pro union in general).

Well technically she was off soaps for almost 20 years and had a good active career so its not like she's Crystal Chappelle and hopping from soap to soap for her entire life.

Actually, to me, it would have made more sense to have asked Agnes Nixon to co-create and help develop a new websoap for PP, one which straddled conventional, soap-styled storytelling with cyber-age production and streaming.

Ah I stand corrected. I still don't think Aggie would be talked into releasing a statement if she didn't have confidence in the project. It could be misguided--but I don't believe she's being tricked into being amouthpiece as others (not you) suggested.

This would have made more sense financially and probably creatively. But, I do think there's some sense to them wanting to have an established franchise name for initially trying something out like this.
