RIP Hal David

He passed away today at the age of 91. The man who put all the lyrics to Burt Bacharach's music. He had a much lower profile publically than Burt did, but made an invaluable contribution to the world of music:

RIP, and IMO, without him, Bacharach was nothing.

Apparently Hal David said this was his favorite song. It's such a tricky little song and suits Dionne's range to a T. It always makes me melancholy.

I'm glad Barbra decided to pair these two songs together, instead of doing them individually. They're a perfect match.

I didn't see your post above, Y&RWT. I love that song. I got a greatest hits cassette of Fifth Dimension a long time ago and just about wore it out listening to this song.

I like that song too, Carl... so many great versions of it:

I can't believe there isn't more Dionne Warwick on this thread. I think the combo of David, Bacharach and Warwick was gold. None of them were anything without the other. Dionne voice was so magical and versatile before she ruined it. Honestly, even in recent years she can make that crappy smokers voice work because she was so well trained.

My favorites were Don't Make Me Over and The Windows of the World.

This was always a nice song.

This is an interesting way of describing his songs:

Geoffrey O’Brien, reviewing the Bacharach-David body of work in The New York Review of Books in 1999, called Mr. David’s lyrics “a peculiar blend” in which “the encroachments of the maudlin are generally kept at bay by the dexterity of the rhymes.”

That is one of Dusty's best. This song is how I first got into Dusty's music, aside from some oldies radio staples. Elvis Costello did a Bacharach cover album and sang this on that PBS show David Byrne hosted. I was transfixed. And Dusty's version is perfection.
