This is a wonderful article. One of my aunts harbored nothing but derision for soap opera and could never understand my love of The Doctors, yet she was mad for Young Doctor Malone. Twenty years after it left the air, she continued to share her memories of Dr. Stefan Koda and complex villain Lionel Steele. Young Dr. Malone has always fascinated me. It is one of the few network serials I do not have in my collection, so I appreciate anything I can find on it. This article is particularly gratifying because IMDB incorrectly attributes the part of Stefan Koda to the Michael Ingram who played Vinnie Wolek on One Life to Live in the 80s. Thus far, I have been unable to convince anyone at the site that the two soap actors are different men who coincidentally share the same name. Obviously Michael Ingram from Young Doctor Malone was born circa 1920. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish I was surprised about IMDB. As I said in the OLTL thread, they claim Peggy O'Shea was on Neighbours for 5 years.

I wish I could see this show. It sounds very intelligent and mature, and as if it had a basic respect for the audience.

Australians seemed fascinated with American soaps in that era. In addition to carrying Days since 1968, other U.S. soaps telecast in Oz during the late 60s/early 70s included: Love of Life, Where the Heart Is, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, The Doctors, and Dark Shadows. World Turns had a short six-month run in 1975, but was too languid for Down Under audiences. The daytime version of Return to Peyton Place was shown in primetime at one point and ran in its entirety in Australia. Of course, Y&R and Search for Tomorrow were popular there, too, with longer runs.

Another gem of a find, CarlD. We always enjoy the articles you share. Thank you!

Thanks for the extra details on show aired in Australia. I would be so happy if any of that was left in Australia. Even in one episode. I guess it was all wiped, but I think there were some Australian prints of Doctor Who discovered.

    • Also, the lawsuit story was not the right story to bring Naomi and Bill into a court battle since those types of lawsuits are usually resolved via settlements.
    • I know that Sara did eventually become Carrie's therapist, but I was curious if the show had her make comments regarding Carrie's stunts of making it seem as though Justin was cheating on Jackie.  Given that Justin cheated on Sara with both Jackie and Brandy, I wondered if it was wise of her to counsel Carrie given the conflict of interest involved. @DRW50I think once Adam/Sara end up married.. Marland didn't see any reason to explore Sara's personal life after the actor playing Adam was released.  I know that Sara lasts until at least Christmas 1982 on the show.. but I don't think she ended up staying on for very long into 1983. The period between Marland quitting and Pam Long starting was the perfect time to clean house on characters that had outgrown their usefulness  (i.e. Ben, Evie, Sara, Jennifer, Morgan).. and tying up stories started by Marland that were too complex (Mona Enright, Mark/Jennifer/Amanda triangle).
    • Unpopular opinion:  The focus on the soap opera tropes over the mysteries and crimes was partly what did the show in.  Also, featuring characters not involved in the legal, police, and criminal elements also hurt the show and took away what made it unique. Featuring characters like Jody, Raven, Sky, etc hurt the show long term.  The show ABCified starting in 1976/1977 and then went through a youthification period starting in 1981.
    • I feel like the lawsuit storyline was resolved quickly because the show didn’t want to spring for more sets.
    • It's been a while, but we have seen the foyer to Bill and Hayley's house as well as the exterior entrance to their house. The foyer was first seen in the premiere episode when Hayley met Vanessa at the house.
    • There's still a year or two before Larkin arrives. Joel is there already. EON does noticeably youthify, although I think they carry it off. Admittedly I haven't seen most of the Jody stories, which from what people here have said aren't great.
    • I don't mind the actor who plays Brian. He's fine. The problem for me is that Paige seems so wishy wishy. She doesn't seem to have much of a personality at this point so I don't see why Brian would be so besotted with her. She just lurches from one trauma to the next. Granted, it's only been a month, but she's not as vibrant as April or even Deborah who has had minimal screen time by this point.  I do worry about the influence of GH on the show since I'm in fall of 1979 and characters have conversations and there's not the drive to "youthify" the show. However, I think Marceau (sp?) is gone. He was given a rather tame sendoff. How long was the actor on the show? I hope this is not a sign of things to come. I worry the show is setting up a murder mystery around one of my favorite characters and I will be mightily annoyed. I also noticed in recent Search for Tomorrow episodes uploaded to YT that the actors playing Logan and Eliot showed up. I don't watch the show but they were in the screencaps. When does Larkin Malloy show up or has he already left? Joel Crothers hasn't shown up either unless I've blinked and missed him.
    • Dr Linden. She treated Vanessa's drug addiction (although Vanessa seemed to forget that by Henry's suicide attempt) , and she's mentioned during Reva's PPD. Although I can't recall if she's actually shown right off the top of my head. She probably was temporarily shelved when Sonni was a therapist (between her crazy times) And I think Billy sees her after he falls off the wagon after Reva's death.
