What bothers me with Natalie/Trevor is that beyond being nice, her entire identity seemed to disappear. She was just his "doll." Last night I was watching the episode when she was close to death, and Trevor was going on about losing his "doll," he was yelling in her ear as she was wheeled to surgery...it was like she was a toy.

^ Yep. But look at Greenlee. They did the same thing to her. She went from being this awesomely spoiled, obnoxious, mini-Erica who would do or say anything and had a high powered career to this whiny, needy woman who was nothing without Ryan. Even Kendall lost her edge when she settled down with Zach. Just like Natalie did. Marion also became a shadw of her formerly fabulous cougar self when she married Stuart. Erica was one of the few women on that show who escaped that fate.

It didn't bother me too much with some of them (for instance, I thought Greenlee was always a mess, I thought Marian was always a very insecure woman and that kind of stayed even when she was with Stuart, along with her lewd comments and one-liners), but you have a point. I guess it jumps out at me more with Natalie because she was so very sleek and ethereal and aloof with Collins in the role - seeing her not just domesticated, but subjugated to just some fantasy figure for Trevor.

I think Taylor just wanted to try new things. I have that article somewhere, no idea where though.

I'm watching the second 1980 episode (slowly!) and smiled when Brooke said she had become a cub reporter, and hey, maybe she'll be a journalist. With all the career changes on soaps, at least they kept that consistent with Brooke.

I wish they'd had it where Janet was a better mother than Natalie, and this caused angst for Natalie when she went back to her life.

We Love Soaps: You left ALL MY CHILDREN the first time in 1984. Why did you leave?

Taylor Miller: They kept on repeating the same storyline over and over again. I likened it to being in pantyhose that were too small. I don't know if you've ever had that experience.

We Love Soaps: No! [Laughs]

Taylor Miller: I wanted and needed to play somebody different, somebody new. I went out to Hollywood and in the ten months I was there I did a nighttime guest spot, a commercial and a play. I guess that was a pretty good. Then I had the job offer to go to ANOTHER WORLD. I just wanted to play somebody different.

Back to the masquerade ball, it seems very abrupt the way Palmer goes off on Ruth like that when he warmly greeted her when she and Joe arrived. So Daisy knew Ruth and Phoebe? I didn't realize she had a background in Pine Valley.

I loved that cheesy muzak Something.

What did you think of that Kennicott girl? She seemed like she was doing some Little Orphan Annie routine? Her speech patterns were annoying, along with her dialogue. And Sybil is like Betty Boop. I think if there had been boards back then they would have lit up over her and Sybil Thorne.

Oh geesh, yeah, they were annoying but mostly Betsy with her, "Sybil, that's not very good manners." I hope Agnes didn't write that early eighties Nickelodeon line. And no offence to anyone named Betsy, but the character and name are so perfectly matched. Sybil could have done voices for cartoons. I've never seen her in material this early, but I actually liked her voice in later Bobby/Cliff stuff where it drops a few octaves and she has a young Beverlee McKinsey thing going on.

When I first started watching AMC people used to talk about how awful the Kennicotts were (I think the only one who had fans was Mary). I wonder why they kept going back to that family.

I said this in the other thread but I just love how gothic the Cortlandts are here. I know that's a cliche but what the hell. I especially love how Daisy is a little mad, like Quentin's crazy wife Jenny on Dark Shadows. And the way Myra skulks around, trying and failing to control these people. The chases through corridors, the scene where Myra is eavesdropping and realizes Daisy crashed the party...

I already mentioned this too but I LOVE the way Palmer gets so furious and practically spits fire through "Happy Birthday."

    • Bill and Smitty was the best part of today. I like the parallel that was drawn between them as "Dupree outsiders." It's similar to Bill's friendship with Ted and I enjoy both of the relationships that Bill has with them. I seriously wonder if anybody behind the scenes thought that the character of Bill was going to be as well liked as he is.  Btw, I see that they're not covering up Mike Manning's tat

Pamela talking like Bernadette Peters isn't really working for me though lol neither is Naomi and Jacob's part in June's storyline.  But I am interested in what's going to happen once Jacob gets Leslie to the police station.

date: Friday, May 16 | Gregori J. Martin, Lynn Martin | Phideaux Xavier Anita and Vernon versus Bill – I love it. Is Vanessa a dominatrix? That's kind of kinky, and Cody seems to love it, too! I love seeing Dana and Ted's dynamic right now; you can sense some kind of passion, and it's differing on both sides. I appreciate us building a connection between Bradley and Nicole. So, we've got the names of the Articulettes: Anita, Sharon and Tracy. A one-night-only kind of performance. Hoping they can pull this off. Dani and Pamela are a hoot together; I love their banter, and I'm so happy to see this friendship continuing to develop on screen. The anvil of Jacob and Naomi liking June being around; that's got to lead to something, no? Douglas, stop playing powerball with Joey. So Nicole wants to sell the house? Girl is jumping over divorce and right to the settling of the assets; thankfully, Vanessa has the keen sense to deny the offer to list the property. Notes: I like seeing different connections being built between characters right now: Bill and Bradley, Dani and Pamela, and Nicole and Vanessa. It's nice seeing things settling. I loved the scene of Pamela cooing over Joey's Instagram, given Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom's real-life relationship history.
    • Boy, do I agree with this. These writers HAVE to know what they're doing when they add those "We're the Duprees" lines....at least I pray to God they do. If they don't, they're clueless. This family is -- like most families -- deeply flawed and going through it. There's something tone deaf about the "We're the Duprees" pronouncements all over the place.
    • Very interesting in what meal Anita and Tracy share.
    • Thanks for sharing your memories. It's so special to get to talk with your mother about a soap she watched when she was younger that you now watch. '70s feminism had to be much tougher, and other than maybe Search for Tomorrow (where the Kathy character is mostly unavailable in '70s form), Ryan's Hope may be the only soap that delved into this. Jill is such a fascinating character, one I'm not surprised was polarizing with viewers. So much about her probably shouldn't have worked, especially when you think of all the backstory thrown at viewers immediately (a previous love affair with Jack, being adopted and never feeling at home in the Coleridge family, being Frank's "other woman" for much of the decade). Nancy Addison was just so special, and the entitlement and arrogance of Jill felt offset by her vulnerability (which was not the case for the rest of her family).  Mary was also very important for feminist debates, and likely more popular with the audience, but I never really connected with her the way I did with Jill. Maybe because the inherent smugness of the Ryans felt like a wall.  Sometimes I wonder if it perversely helped Jill as a character that she was lumped with a complete dud of a partner for a year and a half, because it humanized her - why are you sacrificing your dignity for this loser?  @safe Thanks for reminding me of more Sarah Felder backstory. A great deal I had forgotten. I appreciate her sticking up for the Pat/Nancy story if it was struck down due to prejudice, but there was so much else wrong with that pairing (I say that as one of the few John Blazo fans). I suppose the narrative about Felder is just too easy to believe (and she never has spoken about her time on the show).
    • Leslie uses Tide with Downy and not the Tide with Oxi!
    • I am not sure either, but I'm riding with the outsiders regardless. There was an opportunity to use Anita to ground the family and make you root for them.  I wonder do they still have chemistry, I thought they did at ATWT.
    • Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom had a scene together!!  They're either friendly (which is great) or they're just professionals (which is great).
