What did you think of the story where Nikki began faking her terminal illness?

Do you think that it hurt the Traci character when Beth left for a year or two around this time (87) or did she need the break?

Also What did everyone think of Nikki (almost) Marrying Jim? Did Katherine have any say on that pairing, or did they not have Katherine involved in much of Nikki's life during that time? I know by the time she was gonna marry him, Jack pursued Nikki and she married him instead, even though Jack only did that to get back at Victor (although he fell in love with her later).

Did Brenda as Jill ever get to have scenes with Quinn (Rex) I ask this because i have seen those clips where David comes in telling Jill they have found a man for Katherine, and then they repeat that scene the next day with Jess as Jill, but I think Jess was only temping that day. So yeah, any Quinn/Brenda scenes?

Some of MTS best work & she really should've won an Emmy for it.

Especially since she got to do everything lying (to Victor), scheming (with Jack & Casey), buying her own casket, facing her own mortality. It was a lot of fun.

It was fine. Bill loved Beth personally but he struggled with Traci after she & Brad were married.

He really liked the character but he was very hesitant to compromise her integrity.

Plus Bill was lucky in that Don had chemistry with EVERYONE especially his other leading ladies (Eileen, Tracey, Nina, Brenda) as much as he did with Beth which actually worked for both characters.

Are there any clips out there of Phillip dying and Jill from that time? I'd love to see the scenes between Jill/Phillip/Kay and Nina around this time. Also, whatever happened to the clip of Jill saying "You mean my son is out with that worn out tramp." In regard to Nina. I think this was 1987?

What year did she have the eating disorder? I caught a glimpse of that at my grandmother's and I feel like it was around 1989. Victoria was still a little girl and Nikki excused herself during dinner and ran up to her room and scarfed down a sandwich she had kept in a drawer. I think this was around the time baby Nicholas choked on something in his crib but I tend to confuse that memory with The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.

Carl, thanks for that scene. I've always wanted to see that!

Thanks for posting this, Carl. I've seen this before. The one I was thinking of though was when Jill goes to see Phillip and Katherine and Rex say he's with Nina and the baby and that's when Jill makes the comment about her son being out with that worn out tramp, Nina. It was on YouTube a while back but I guess someone took it down. Maybe it was from 1988 or 89.

Thanks, DeeeDee. Do you know if the clip is still around?

Also, I've always wondered (and I think you'd be able to give a great answer to this)do you think Y&R would have still been successful if Bell didn't write out Leslie, Lorie, Chris, Snapper, Greg, Lucas and Lance?

It should be.

Y&R still would've been successful (Bill was just THAT good a writer) but the change definitely helped.

It made him push himself instead of resting on his laurels & a lot of the new hires (Stern, Douglas, Ford, Bregman, Maitland, Hadley, Lester, Braeden, MTS, Donnelly, both Davidsons) were BANK from Day 1.

But do you think the cast getting too big with the new additions plus the Brooks/Fosters/Prentis family's would have caused some negative impacts on the style of the show or made it seem like he was just recycling stories with new characters while the old characters were still around?

Do you think it was a mistake to have Paul's siblings gone for so many years, or was the mistake in giving him siblings at all?

I also wonder about some of the plans Bell had for actors he used on DAYS. Susan Seaforth only had a year or two of story on Y&R, Patty Weaver was mostly a supporting player after her first few years, and Margaret Mason only had story for a few brief strong periods. Or did he have more planned for Margaret but her health problems were an issue?

    • Vanessa told Joey that her best friend had cheated and has a surprise daughter.  Joey said the same had happened to him.  I wasn't sure if Joey was saying he has an adult out-of-wedlock child?
    • Interesting. I definitely think that it's possible that Jan could be a former lover of Joey's from back in the day, maybe back when he was still married. I won't be surprised if it comes out at some point that Jan used to be an escort or something.
    • Quick question, How are you guys making time to watch all these soaps? I consider myself a pretty organized person, but since I have committed to watching more of the older soaps. I feel all over the place, and can not figure out a schedule that seems to work.  How are you all doing it?   Thanks. I will check that out.
    • Oh, poor Henry had to wait for the grave to finally come "out"! The whole things was McTavish plot dictated so that Hart could have money to pull off his scam of Roger later. The fortune is totally forgotten later. Which reminds me WHY did they fire Hilliard who actually could kinda pass for a midwestern farm boy..from JOISEY Grillo? AM and Lucy's wedding has got to be the weirdest wedding up to that point and really exemplified the McLaiby cheesy run. Universal Studios? And the Spauldings shut the place down for the wedding that only involves 6 people??? Its not even that weird that Bridget and David arent there...they didn't even invite AM's Mom or Grandfather...
    • TBH, I found Felicity's dialogue in those scenes where she encouraged Chad and Cat to admit their feelings for one another more offensive than Xander yelling (although both are bad).  And, I don't get why there is any question of Xander's behavior being offensive, given that he knew that Felicity deserved an apology.  A customer openly expressing anger at a service employee in public is awful, regardless of circumstance. I like giving the character more to do, because there is a value in representing a person with a congenital disorder being employed, given that the unemployment rate in that community tops 83%.  I just hope they find a voice for the character that matches her functioning ability.  As for Cat, I wonder if she is going to inherit any of Clyde's money?  And that was the reason for the phone call.  I know he's not dead, but he could have named her family as the beneficiary of some insurance policy if he were to be incapacitated.  And the call could have been an attorney trying to reach her to give her money.
    • Oh you may have been watching the Teresa/Tom storyline...or "Terry the tumor" as she was called.
    • Are these new?! Damn, he is in the prime of his life.
    • He is a 40 year old large grown man "raising his voice" and calling a teenage girl "careless".  That's inappropriate.  I am not going to argue at the octave of his voice although I would consider it yelling.  Felicity was visibly upset.  She also has special needs, but it would be wrong to do that to anyone in general.  Xander was out of line.  He didn't immediately apologize or admit he was wrong until Princess Sarah was okay.  Idk, go find your wife's epipen instead of berating a young girl.  Or, you know, Sarah could have asked if there was any pistachio in her scone as a pre-caution.  That's how most people with allergies that severe order things. I do think this story or plot point is silly, but acting like Xander did nothing wrong is just strange.  Even if Felicity DID do something wrong was he just going to continue to go on and on while his wife was going into shock?  That's the proper reaction lol.
    • I didn't get that so far so I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever pick back up.  I must have chosen bad episodes because what I saw had some really bad Irish accents from supporting/day players. They were hard to get through and I just didn't have the patience to deal with them. I don't think these accents would be allowed to go through today. I assume these accents were ironed out as the show went on--reminded me of Deas's terrible accent on GL that was dropped because it was so bad.
