It is so bizarre how memory works. I very much remember Sasha being killed, but I did not remember Sandra Nelson being in the role during that time. I thought this all happened with Michelle still there. I know Michelle left Feb 97 so my memory was right off on this one.

Glad to see Sasha’s death show up it’s been years since I’ve seen it.

Yep! Stafford, Tom and Davis all left within the same week and a half in mid-February. First Garesis came in at the end of Feb, Nelson in mid-March, Aldrich at the beginning of April. Add to the burden of Shari Shattuck as Ashley, with all four characters in front burner storylines it was very easy to remember why Spring 1997 was so darn jarring to watch after seeing a few April episodes in the Vault. Major yikes.

SOD named Gareis as Best Recast of 1997 although I feel that Nelson was definitely a legit contender.

Aldrich who absolutely flopped and was gone by the end of July easily could have been a contender for Worst Recast of 1997. However the even worse debacle that was Shawn Batten on ATWT (along with Josh Taylor on both GL and Days)  was Aldrich’s saving grace.

Whenever someone brings up the character of Grace, as portrayed by Jennifer Gareis, I feel compelled to recall the way that Y&R played Sharon dirty.

Gareis's recast coincided with the infamous story of Nick sleeping with Grace when he mistakenly thought it was Sharon in his bed.  However, in order for that plot to be logical, we would have to believe that Nick was not face-to-face with his lover that evening.  Thus, Y&R writers made the audience assume that Sharon prefers "it" from behind.  A rather scandalous character trait that I associate with Sharon every time she has a love scene.

@soapfan770 The recasts were part of why Y&R was in a lull during the first half of 1997. Remember that Reilly's Days nearly knocked Y&R out of #1 in June 1997. I think that shook up Bill Bell and thankfully Y&R picked up during the second half of 1997.

@j swift Bill Bell had two intoxicated affair storylines before Nick/Grace. Dru/Malcolm when she was over-medicated and Caroline/Ridge after she indulged in too much champagne. I don't recall the Nick/Grace intoxicated affair episode but maybe Nick had his eyes closed the whole time.

The initial  Nick/Grace one night stand was a pretty tawdry affair and in a way was opposite of what happened with Caroline/Ridge, Dru/Malcolm, and later Ridge/Brooke. Nick was so intoxicated he really thought he was making love to Sharon, but Grace,, living with the pair and having a secret crush on Nick more than happily used it to her advantage and let Nick continue. Yeesh.

But for sure I would say the Sharon/Nick/Grace/Cassie stuff, Danny finally discovering the truth about most of Phyllis’ deceptions, the return of Michael, and Veronica Landers surfacing would definitely set Y&R in a better direction than it was headed.

    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
    • Beverlee was on a whole other level from Kim. It's not like they were in competition with each other. I get the feeling that Kim had a slight problem with the super-professional, serious cast members who just wanted everyone to be prepared and do the work, as she seems to like having fun on set. (She's made a few cracks about Chris Bernau being like that). Bev was definitely one of those. But they didn't work together that much. Yeah, they made her manic and also much weaker. She always had a vulnerability, but wanting to kill herself over that guy? No way. Not only that, he didn't leave her! She insisted he marry Maeve. When they did the tribute to Bert/Charita, the compilation of scenes with her showed how much the cast had been almost totally turned over in a relatively short period of time. Nearly every shot was of her by herself because most people she had worked with had been fired, left or been replaced. I assume they couldn't show her with people who hadn't been replaced, like Don Stewart, Elvera Roussel, or Robert Newman because they would have had to pay them for using their clips. It's dreadful to watch. Like she had no connection to the current show.
