March 1, 201016 yr Member Rex doesn't give a fig about Natalie or Jessica, and the only reason Bo spends time with him is because most of his family is dead.
March 1, 201016 yr Member If, say, the Lords had been a black family from the start, this would be another story. But all the main families are white, all of their children are white, and the love interests are white. So adding minorities to the show really is like shoving them in there even though they don't fit.
March 1, 201016 yr Member Depending on who you ask, the Buchanans were shoehorned onto ONE LIFE at the expense of the Riley, Grey/Hall and Wolek clans. Just sayin'. Even then, OLTL later did a good job of introducing viewers to new black characters through the Buchanans. Kevin/Rachel, Bo/Nora and Rachel, Bo/Hank. I guess that was the point last year with the Matthew/Destiny friendship and Rachel's return but it went nowhere.
March 1, 201016 yr Member Rex doesn't give a fig about Natalie or Jessica, and the only reason Bo spends time with him is because most of his family is dead. Carl, you're not exactly a source for fair and balanced views on Rex, thank you very much.
March 1, 201016 yr Member It certainly is. Rex is a Buchanan by extension (through Natalie, Bo, and Jessica), and it also extends to Gigi through their relationship. And Stacy, as Gigi's sister, benefits from it as well. Ok, Rex's monthly interactions with Bo makes him Buchanan? And please, when the hell was Stacy around the Buchanans? She only interacted with Rex, Gigi, and Schuyler yet seemed to get so much airtime. I see no reason why we can't keep most of the core characters, and meanwhile develop minorities. It seems so one-sided that you feel white characters aren't being shoe-horned onto shows yet blacks and Latinos are. I'm not calling you a racist.
March 1, 201016 yr Member But all the main families are white, all of their children are white, and the love interests are white. And thus, we have ONE LIFE's biggest problem, in a nutshell.
March 1, 201016 yr Member She was a part of the family and a trusted friend and confidant. That's easy to forget now because the time when the show came closest to truly blurring the lines, someone pulled back and poor Veronica Redd Forest was fired. Exactly. But that's a whole other discussion.
March 1, 201016 yr Member And thus, we have ONE LIFE's biggest problem, in a nutshell. Well, technically all soaps, but only if you think it's a problem.
March 1, 201016 yr Member Okay, people. Soaps can't afford to just drop their CORE characters (using OLTL for example: the Cramers, Buchanans, and Lords) in favour of placating minority viewers. It's better to have OLTL, for example, on the air with its classic characters than try to shoehorn blacks, Latinos, gays, etc. into the story. It's nice to be a White heterosexual. Soaps seemed to make it work back in the day, so I'm not understanding this logic.
