Underrated social issue stories

GH got a great deal of acclaim for their handling of AIDS, Monica's breast cancer, BJ's heart going to Maxie. AMC and OLTL for their stories involving homosexuality. And many other stories on soaps which have gotten awards and attention.

Are there any social issue stories on soaps you felt did not get enough praise? Or which you feel have been forgotten and people now don't remember how good the stories were?

I think social issues need to be banned from daytime. It's either patronising, preachy or under-researched. Mimi Torchin said it nicely when criticising Latham's epilepsy, deafness, meningitis, what else did she serve? and illness-of-the-weak stories: this is the 21st century, people are going to find much more information, and much more accurate, elsewhere. "Raising awareness" is a pathetic excuse for these soaps to serve undercooked stories.

I kind of think that the "they can find it elsewhere" almost makes these stories more important, because the thought of someone going on a random Internet site for major medical advice can sometimes be a bit frightening. I'd rather they get it from a well-researched soap story than from Suzanne Sommers. But I agree most soap social issue stories in recent years have not been good.

What were your underrated social issue stories on past soaps?

For me it's more about people talking about past social issue stories on soaps which they liked. I don't disagree with you about the current soaps and their way of telling social issues. Whether they need to be done, who knows. I think there's a way to tell a good social issue story which also entertains, but these days that's too much to ask for.

The Australian soaps used to do the best job at balancing realistic social issues with outrageous soap stories. Shame no one has been able to do that balance effectively in years.

The British soaps were often seen as too gritty and depressing, and the American soaps were seen as outrageous camp. The Aussie soaps seemed like something in the middle, though not anymore, of course.

I know there was a rule on Australian soaps, wasn't there, that you could not use the word "rape"? Is that true?

I agree that sometimes the British soaps were too depressing. Other times they just went too much for shock value. Corrie, back with a sensationalist producer in 2000-2001, told a story about how a woman learned she had advanced, terminal cervical cancer because her pap smears had come back with inaccurate results. This was criticized by doctors, and by the actress herself.

I personally like a good social issue story but now it's kind of a catch-22. Being on daily, soaps are uniquely positioned to tell detailed stories and show the type of slow build and that a lot of these stories need, especially the health-related ones, and they can show the fallout and they effect on multiple people. The problem IMO is that soaps no longer do slow build or fallout. Plus its impossible to take a story about breast cancer or AIDS seriously in the same genre where you have numerous people in town who have returned from the dead multiple times and people who forget giving birth.

    • Also, the lawsuit story was not the right story to bring Naomi and Bill into a court battle since those types of lawsuits are usually resolved via settlements.
    • I know that Sara did eventually become Carrie's therapist, but I was curious if the show had her make comments regarding Carrie's stunts of making it seem as though Justin was cheating on Jackie.  Given that Justin cheated on Sara with both Jackie and Brandy, I wondered if it was wise of her to counsel Carrie given the conflict of interest involved. @DRW50I think once Adam/Sara end up married.. Marland didn't see any reason to explore Sara's personal life after the actor playing Adam was released.  I know that Sara lasts until at least Christmas 1982 on the show.. but I don't think she ended up staying on for very long into 1983. The period between Marland quitting and Pam Long starting was the perfect time to clean house on characters that had outgrown their usefulness  (i.e. Ben, Evie, Sara, Jennifer, Morgan).. and tying up stories started by Marland that were too complex (Mona Enright, Mark/Jennifer/Amanda triangle).
    • Unpopular opinion:  The focus on the soap opera tropes over the mysteries and crimes was partly what did the show in.  Also, featuring characters not involved in the legal, police, and criminal elements also hurt the show and took away what made it unique. Featuring characters like Jody, Raven, Sky, etc hurt the show long term.  The show ABCified starting in 1976/1977 and then went through a youthification period starting in 1981.
    • I feel like the lawsuit storyline was resolved quickly because the show didn’t want to spring for more sets.
    • It's been a while, but we have seen the foyer to Bill and Hayley's house as well as the exterior entrance to their house. The foyer was first seen in the premiere episode when Hayley met Vanessa at the house.
    • There's still a year or two before Larkin arrives. Joel is there already. EON does noticeably youthify, although I think they carry it off. Admittedly I haven't seen most of the Jody stories, which from what people here have said aren't great.
    • I don't mind the actor who plays Brian. He's fine. The problem for me is that Paige seems so wishy wishy. She doesn't seem to have much of a personality at this point so I don't see why Brian would be so besotted with her. She just lurches from one trauma to the next. Granted, it's only been a month, but she's not as vibrant as April or even Deborah who has had minimal screen time by this point.  I do worry about the influence of GH on the show since I'm in fall of 1979 and characters have conversations and there's not the drive to "youthify" the show. However, I think Marceau (sp?) is gone. He was given a rather tame sendoff. How long was the actor on the show? I hope this is not a sign of things to come. I worry the show is setting up a murder mystery around one of my favorite characters and I will be mightily annoyed. I also noticed in recent Search for Tomorrow episodes uploaded to YT that the actors playing Logan and Eliot showed up. I don't watch the show but they were in the screencaps. When does Larkin Malloy show up or has he already left? Joel Crothers hasn't shown up either unless I've blinked and missed him.
    • Dr Linden. She treated Vanessa's drug addiction (although Vanessa seemed to forget that by Henry's suicide attempt) , and she's mentioned during Reva's PPD. Although I can't recall if she's actually shown right off the top of my head. She probably was temporarily shelved when Sonni was a therapist (between her crazy times) And I think Billy sees her after he falls off the wagon after Reva's death.
