So, after finishing the first season a few days ago...

Favorite scenes:

Catelyn and the direwolf fending off the assassin who came to kill Bran

That exquisite, lengthy scene where Cersei and Robert talked about their failed marriage

Robert slapping Cersei ("I shall wear it as a badge of honor" "Keep quiet or I'll honor you again")

Catelyn at the Aerie realizing her sister's madness

Jon's friends reciting the oath to convince him to stay with the Night Watch (very cheesy and 1940 MGM but I loved it so much)

Miri Mazz Duur shaming Dany for her arrogance and lack of understanding (wonderful acting and one of the only times that story moves beyond the weird colonialist trappings)

Dany telling Miri that she will hear her scream (and she did)

Arya's fencing master fighting off the guards as she escaped (I'm going to delude myself into thinking he's still alive and fled King's Landing)

Sansa nearly pushing Joffrey off the walkway

Robert and Tywin wearing Jaime down to nothing, because they knew that inside he felt he was nothing. Jaime should be pathetic but NCW and the writing make him far more vulnerable than I'd expected him to be.

That unbelievable speech from Old Nan about the North.

That scene where Versys and Littlefinger call each other out as being worthless schemers no one has respect for, yet then acknowledge that they must maintain their uneasy truce.

What did not work for me:

- the filler porn and the endless profanity that sometimes felt forced into people's mouths

- Littlefinger and all his scheming against Catelyn and Ned based on a lot of backstory and rushed through one or two episodes at most. The whole thing was very tell-not-show and made Catelyn look like an idiot. Aiden Gillen also seemed to visibly struggle with most of this material.

- Dany's story. I spent the first 4-5 episodes alternately cringing at the dubious stereotypes and waiting for Joxer to pop up. Even as I began to accept the story more, I never managed to see her brother or Drogo in roles beyond plot devices. This story had some very moving sequences, especially when it comes to the white savior syndrome, but I just couldn't believe in it as a whole.

- Renly and Loras. I'm glad that GoT felt no need to make gay or bi characters overly flashy or lively, but they're both so very dull. Loras being Cersei's boytoy came out of nowhere and the most I took from it is that he doesn't have an ass.

Lol DR you sound just like me. I too have convinced myself that Syrio Forrel (the fencing master) is SOMEHOW still alive in the world. He's just hiding out somewhere waiting for the Starks to come back into power..

Old Nan's speech was really hilarious as is Bran's reaction. Varys and Littlefinger are two of the most interesting characters in the novels. Even after 5 books I'm still not sure whether I trust either of them or who I should root for...

Oh well that's a relief. I thought it was Loras because I read that they were together and I couldn't tell them apart. So that was the guy Robert kept berating, right? The cup bearer.

I appreciate you letting me know.

In my half-asleep writings I forgot to mention that I did think Emilia and Jason Momoa had great chemistry. I can see why they had such a fan following. Considering the nature of the relationship, they did a lot to sell the love between the characters.

Yes, Lancel was Robert's squire, IIRC. He has a somewhat larger role in Season 2, but I've yet to spot him in Season 3.

The doll who plays Loras, Finn Jones, I first glimpsed on The Sarah Jane Adventures, as Jo Grant's grandson.

    • Very. They're building up his story again and picking the perfect time to do so. As the SilkPress storyline climaxes and go off in several great directions, they are building up that story to take a turn.

    • @Soapsuds Thanks for posting Night by night Mon 8pm The Rookies edged Gunsmoke but attracted younger(more desirable) viewers.NBC failed with Born Free/Smothers Brothers (how many different series did those 2 get??) 9-11pm  Maude/Rhoda/Medical Center dominated on CBS,but Football and Movies were competitive on an occasional basis. ABC tried  SWAT/Caribe later in the season and the former worked for them. Tues 8-11 pm CBS all the way Good Times, MASH, Hawaii Five O,Barnaby Jones. NBC had the fading Adam 12,Movie and Police Story mmm...don't see that listed? ABC Happy Days, which ABC decided to keep despite lackluster ratings, the Movie of the Week and Marcus Welby-once pulling big numbers but no longer. 8pm NBC had a new hit with Little House, easily beating Sons and Daughters, which was axed and replaced with Tony Orlando, which did much better. ABC had That's My Mama and the Wed movie. 9pm Cannon was the lead here as Lucas Tanner failed to capitalize on the LHOTP leadin. ABC continued the movie. 10pm Manhunter started strong for CBS but petered out and was cancelled. Petrocelli manged to beat Get Christie Love, which was replaced by Baretta-no ratings winner but ABC decided to renew. Thurs Another CBS night with The Waltons and a movie. ABC counterprogrammed with Odd Couple/Paper Moon then Barney Miller/Karen NBC did even worse with Sierra and replaced it with Mac Davis which improved ratings quite a bit. However, it was moved to 9pm for Sunshine/Bob Crane 9pm Some good numbers for ABC with Streets of San Francisco fending off Ironside,Archer and Mac Davis. 10pm Harry O had a slim victory over Movin On Fri 8-11 NBCs best night Sanford/Chico/Rockford/Police Woman. 8pm CBS had high hopes for Planet of the Apes but it bombed. Replacement Khan did even worse. Paul Sand and We'll Get By were tossed in at the end of the season. With poor lead ins the Friday movie didn't deliver. ABC's odd line up saw Kodiak flop, Six Million dollar Man struggle and Texas Wheelers  quickly cancelled. Kung Fu was brought in @8 and Six Million moved to 9. Then Kolchak took over at 8 and Hot*l Baltimore/Odd Couple 9-10. Despite controversy Hot*l flopped. 10pm ABC tried Kolchak then Baretta and finally Get Christie Love Sat CBS lead  with #1 AITF then Paul Sand/MTM/Bob Newhart/Carol Burnett. Paul Sand lost too much of the lead in so CBS spun off The Jeffersons and it was a smash. NBC did OK with Emergency (which beat Paul Sand on occasion, thus hastening that show's demise) and a movie. ABC was a disaster with New Land/Kung Fu and Nakia all failing. They introduced a movie @9 and moved Kung Fu to 8. Sun  NBC  with Disney and Mystery Movie (Columbo McCloud, MacMillan and Wife/Amy Prentiss)did well. ABC flopped with Sonny Bono and recovered by moving Six Million Dollar Man from Fri as a lead in to the movie. CBS hoped Apples Way would be another Waltons but no, so Cher did what Sonny couldn't. Kojak and Mannix successfully finished out the night. Two other shows on the ratings list were Adams of Eagle Lake starring Andy Griffith. Only 2 episodes aired and did well, so I'm not sure what happened there. As for The Law it was a series follow up to a 2 and a half hour NBC special movie .

    • Trust is very easily lost and very hard to re-build.
    • Oh, I know it was. I was just talking about how it's not giving me parallels to Caroline dying. It's really as far from it as possible.  But about the foreshadowing - Hahahhahah. Yes. And you missed one - Liam googling - "what is cancer"...
    • GH 2-17-21 Denise Alexander's last appearance https://www.instagram.com/p/DJdjXgwJ1Ez/
    • @Maxim This Liam dying out of the blue was crafted in a hurry for three reasons: 1. To facilitate JMW's leave 2. To prop Steffy - 'Oh, Steffy has so much grace and moral superiority that she ignored everything that swine HoLo did to tell her for the sake of their daughters. Queen Stephanie would be so proud of her!' 3. Distracting Steffy enough to give Lunacy an easy way to slither into Finn's life. Once Luna discovers that Lame is dying, she'll play that card: 'Dad, life is too short and precious!' If this was an intentional story, we would've had the typical B&B foreshadowing - Liam faceplanting into a bowl of pasta, Lame missing meetings, being forgetful. Instead, Lame does an impulsive quick quit and $B doesn't even care enough to make a single attempt to get him back? Please.
