IMO I don't see a reboot going over well at all. Tobey IS the quintessential Spider Man.

Wouldn't it just be easier to hire a new director?

This is so stupid. WHY do people need to remake, yes REMAKE, movies that are less than 10 years old? "Reboot" my ass. It's called you don't have any original ideas, idiots.

I wish they wouldn't reboot so soon, but I'm happy they're ending the franchise now. I thought Spiderman 3 sucked ass.

New 'Spider-Man' Andrew Garfield Latest Twist To Reboot Tired Franchise

By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday July 1, 2010 @ 8:32pm EDT

Hollywood has newly minted its next star, and it's baby-faced Andrew Garfield. I was first to tell you the 26-year-old was a finalist to play the new Spider-Man in the Marc Webb-directed 3D relaunch of Sony Picture Entertainment's most lucrative film franchise. (Also under consideration were Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane and Michael Angarano. Sony execs viewed the screen tests of six of those eight finalists last Friday night.)

I'm told the pay scale on the film is around $500,000 salary on the first film, $1 million for the second one, and $2 million for the third film. All of the finalists were presented with those terms in a deal for one film and two options.

The young thesp can be seen in The Other Boleyn Girl and The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus and The Red Riding Trilogy and the upcoming Never Let Me Go and The Social Network. So, despite his youth, he has experience working with prominent directors like David Fincher and Terry Gilliam. Born in Los Angeles to a British mother and an American father, he moved with his family to Surrey, England when he was 3. He was trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and then began acting primarily on stage. He played Romeo once, and modeled in Vogue, and in 2007 was named ONE OF 10 ACTORS TO WATCH by a Hollywood trade.

Garfield's biggest break until today was being cast in the upcoming Fincher-directed The Social Network; my sources say his scene-stealing star turn is the reason he snagged the role of Spider-Man over the other finalists. But it is his heartbreaking performance in Boy A, playing a character trying to outrun his involvement in a heinous crime during his childhood, that captured my attention. With the studio taking the rebooted Peter Parker back in time to high school, Garfield's youthful appearance and ability to display vulnerability was as important to his casting as his believability in the action sequences. Neither Garfield nor director Webb have ever done a 3D or tentpole movie. Sony will now be able to line up the rest of its cast for the film which will begin shooting by year's end for a July 3, 2012 release date from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt.

This puts an end to all the speculation and drama that began last December, when problems with the script for Spider-Man 4 prompted an internal memo to crew from the visual effects department that script problems were going to delay a February start of production and the film's May 11, 2012 release date. Director Sam Raimi hated the script, which saw the writers Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, Gary Ross and Alvin Sargent all take passes at it. The seriousness of those script problems became evident when visual effects crews were told to take other jobs, because there was no sense when production would start. On January 11, Deadline broke the story that Raimi, the studio and producers decided to scrap the fourth Spider-Man film with Raimi and Tobey Maguire. The studio instead focus on the re-boot. The studio was emboldened by a script that Vanderbilt wrote. While Raimi didn't like it, Sony execs saw its re-boot potential. The studio's determination to move quickly was borne out by a Deadline scoop two days later that Webb became the choice to direct a new 3D-shot film which would take the franchise back to the beginning, with Peter Parker struggling to come to grips with his superpowers in high school.

While websites floated bogus rumors that actors like Lerman and most recently Josh Hutcherson had landed the Spidey role, the studio narrowed its list of eight finalists to play the wall crawler. Studio brass viewed the screen tests of six of the eight actual candidates that most impressed the studio, director and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, who are producing for Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios. The studio ended the search and quickly locked in a deal with Garfield's CAA reps.

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 1, 2010 – After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”

Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment. B-roll footage of the announcement will be available via satellite later this evening -- see uplink times coordinate information below.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

I like Emma Stone, so I'm fine with her being MJ.

http://www.deadline.com/2010/10/glees-dianna-agron-georgina-haig-tangled-in-spidey-love-interest-web/

Sony Pictures Entertainment will imminently offer the role of Mary Jane Watson to Emma Stone, who starred for the studio in Zombieland and Easy A. It's another good role for Stone, who is currently shooting the Tate Taylor-directed adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett bestseller The Help for DreamWorks. She plays Skeeter, the college student who comes home determined to expose the class differences between the matriarchs and their house servants in the South in 1962.

That leaves the four other actresses I mentioned yesterday (with the possibility they could widen the search) for the role of Gwen Stacy. Those contenders are Glee's Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig and Dominique McElligott. Stacy, played in Spiderman 3 by Bryce Dallas Howard, is a plum part for the first installment of the 3D Marc Webb-directed reboot of Spider-Man, because she is the first love interest of the high school-aged Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield. Mary Jane--played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy--becomes more pivotal in the later installments of the Spidey saga.
