So... who do you think was the first gay cartoon character? Snagglepuss or Velma? Didn't this come not long after the succcess of Battle Of The Network Stars? Looking back, it seems like a version of that for kids. Edited January 1, 201016 yr by alphanguy74

I think part of it was Battle of the Network Stars and also The Olympics in general. And it was targeted for kids. I was 7 or 8 when it first appeared on ABC.
January 1, 201016 yr Member Does Boomerang still re-run this? I know they did during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Not that I'm an avid watcher, but that network seems to be more about modern cartoons than classic cartoon these days.
January 2, 201016 yr Member LOL! I thought when I read the title to this thread, "Surely to God that's not about..." AND IT WAS!! Memories! The question now is, "Who did you root for?" cct

January 2, 201016 yr Author Member I that Paul Lynde doing the voice of Mildew? Yes, Paul Lynde did the voice of Mildew Wolf.
January 3, 201016 yr Member yes, this show, had, Heavens-to-Mergatroid, Paul Lynde, even! I rooted for the Yogi Yahooeys. Not sure why, as the Scooby Doobies had the very sexy-for-a-boy-of-eight Angels from Captain Caveman.
January 3, 201016 yr Member I loved this show and not until years later did I realize that it was reruns I was watching in the late '80s. I was weirded out when Fred and Barney made a cameo though, shouldn't they have been, y'know, dead? And what was with Muttley/Mumbley, why two different characters? If you pause it at 1:43, Daws Butler voiced nine of the characters in that shot, not to mention Snagglepuss and Huckleberry Hound in the previous shot. Mildew was originally voiced by Paul Lynde, but that's not Paul in this clip, I forget the voice actor's name, but he's just aping Paul's voice.
January 3, 201016 yr Author Member I always loved Scooby the best growing up. But I sure loved Mumbley too. He was a trip!
January 3, 201016 yr Member Watched the reruns on Cartoon Network in the 90s and LOVED it. Definitely rooted for the Scooby Doobies. IIRC, the Yogi team had mostly cartoons from the 50s-60s, and the Scooby team had all of the 70s Hannah-Barbara characters.
January 3, 201016 yr Member Exactly, the Yogi Yahooeys were all of the classic HB characters who'd also star in Yogi's Funtastic Treasure Hunt, Yogi and the Spruce Goose, et cetera.
January 4, 201016 yr Member Too funny. Wow, good times. Loved when they would preview the new Sat morning cartoon season. Always preferred ABC probably because of school house rock but Hong Kong Phooey was my fave (don't remember which network).
January 4, 201016 yr Member Oh, I LOVED it when they would do the Friday night specials previewing the Saturday morning lineup! My neighborhood friends would come over and watch it, we'd be so excited. God I miss my childhood. I remember one year it starred a group of high schoolers who were charged to go on a mini-adventure to find the lost NBC Saturday morning cartoon lineup. They found all of the shows just in the nick of time, and once they did, a wizard played by Sherman Hemsley (I'm not making this up, he was starring in NBC's Amen at the time) appeared and rewarded the kids with their own show as they were Saved By the Bell. And there you have it.
