ATWT Canceled

I couldn't even presume to know how to judge a breakdown writer by what makes it onto the air, especially these days - it seems like it's the easiest job at these soaps for someone higher up to meddle with, at so many points in the process, up to and including post-production editing. Not that I've ever actually watched a soap at the time that Casiello was writing for it to begin with. So I can't speak to his soap writing abilities, but I have no doubt that he has positive feelings about ATWT and that he's sorry that it's been canceled... Why else would he have swiped a copy of Doug Marland's original story bible for the show from the files and posted excerpts on his blog all those years later? I don't think I ever even saw ATWT before Marland passed away, and I treasured that.

As for Reiner, all I remember about his TV Guide column was his praise for Passions, Paul Rauch's GL, and Colleen Zenk Pinter. His commentary on the first two always made me cringe, but I was always neutral-leaning-toward-positive on CZP (I've certainly always thought she was a good actress in everything I've seen of her, but it's not like she was Ilene Kristen or Beverlee McKinsey or Carmen Duncan or Maureen Garrett or or... or anything). I have no problem believing that he is sincere about mourning the fact that he will never see the character of Barbara on TV again (actually he was probably sincere about his love for the other two as well - I think I even got a response from him to an irate e-mail that I had sent about something he had said about GL, acknowledging my point of view and defending his own position). And honestly in these dark days for anyone who has ever loved a soap, especially, I can feel for him.

Tom as always spoken highly of his time at ATWT and I do believe he is sad about ATWT going off the air. A lot of behind-the-scenes soap people are on twitter, and so what if they use it. I don't understand why they used be bashed for using it.

And just because Reiner works in reality tv now means he doesn't/didn't care for ATWT?

I just don't understand all the negativity when people are saying positive things about the show.

Thing$ change. Feeling$ change. There'$ alot of $tuff that make$ people change.

You can't honestly tell me someone so passionate about soaps and the soap opera genre would be actively pimping the demise of Y&R like this and trying to sell it as high-brow art to the already dwindling Y&R fanbase. "Loved writing Michelle and Peter today."

I think any "sad" feelings this man has for the demise of ATWT are extremely feigned. I wish he would just go away. He tried to sell his, "I'm a fan, just like you" B.S. to anyone who would listen to him during the strike and after Dena fired him. Where's his soap opera "activism" and "passion" now? I wish he would have never come out publicly and said anything. He doesn't write for art or for a passion and love for soaps, as he swindled DAYS and other soap fans into believing. He writes for money.

I remember the Zinky-Pints bullsh!t. LOL. Was that really ten years ago? Damn, I've gotten older.

And I highly doubt Reiner watches ATWT, even on the off-chance he has free. Homeboy couldn't wait to get out of daytime. And good riddance to his tabloid-style, kiss-ass interviews and scoops.

It's because of the way Casiello or, as you call him(rather appropriately) "Tom," came out publicly and said, "I'm a fan. Just like you." And he's still out there, pretending to do it because he's "a fan" when everyone knows that he's pretty much sold his soul to the devil for any quick buck, especially after admitting previously that he never "got" Y&R the first time around.

You're not going to honesty say that are you?! Reiner didn't give a flying fig about daytime or the fans. He used TVGuide Online to wield his personal agenda and biases until he could move onto whatever he could get. And again, the low point was that ass-kissing interview with Susan Lee. Pathetic.

And those weren't "positive" things said on Marlena's blog about ATWT. Those were reflections of things that have come and gone.

What's wrong with that? Why can't writers express their thoughts or what they're feeling? So are we going to jump on Michele Val Jean now for saying how she almost forgot how good of a dialogue writer Bob Guza is?

Well, it's people here who keep bringing him up or post links or quote him. No offense, BC, but there's so much BS in that post. You don't even know the guy.

MVJ is entitled to an opinion, as is Casiello. But she doesn't sit there, like Casiello did saying, "I'm doing it for the fans" one minute and then a year or so later, bashing message board fans for doing, essentially, the exact same thing in a blog did when he was on his "forced sabbatical" from daytime. There's a cliche involving kitchen and the heat...

And you DO?

(And no offense taken, Toups. We're both adults, entitled to express our opinions. At least I hope that's the case. As Dunaway said channeling Crawford, "I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at the DIRT.")

Agreed.

I remember when Chris B I think posted about Casiello saying on Twitter how amazing the stuff surrounding Colleen's death was, how hard they worked on it, and just how fantastic it would all be. I want to know why the hell was he pimping that sh!t on Twitter? I want to know what fantasticness there was in Colleen's death and the episodes that related to it? What impact did Colleen's death have in the long-term? What? So Billy can write trashy things about the Newman's in Restless Style?

I guess I can see bellcurve's point. Why the hell was he pimping unpopular plotlines on Twitter? Where was the "good" that came out of this character's death? It's like he was trying to manipulate viewers into better accepting such a ridiculous story decision. He might not have been doing that, who knows? But I was really turned off by how hard he tried to sell Colleen's death and the episodes around it on Twitter.

I've never watched Y&R and it doesn't sound like now is the time to start, so I can't judge it. I certainly can't begin to judge the culpability let alone the motives of mid-level writers on their staff. I'm truly sorry for people who have watched and loved Y&R over the years and feel that it is declining before their eyes. I was only going by what Casiello has said about ATWT, some of which has added to my appreciation for and insight into ATWT's history. Whatever his reason(s) were for sharing that, I appreciate it, now more than ever.

I don't really know one way or the other about Reiner, but I guess I didn't see what he could gain by coming out of the woodwork now with insincere elegies for ATWT. I guess I was inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it doesn't really affect me one way or the other.

What! Just when it get juicy yall take it to PM? I would like one too. I don't see the problem discussing it here though. This thread will run almost a year. I'm sure it'll be back on track in a day or two. Considering he's a (terrible) ATWT writer it is on topic IMO.

I apologize for contributing to this tangent. That was part of the reason I hadn't posted anything about this until now - so as not to veer off in questionably relevant directions. Agreed that this should be about ATWT, and so I'll bow out now. Most of what I can say about ATWT is probably going to be somehow related to another soap that I've watched more frequently, so I really should leave it to people with a more direct history with ATWT. But I do have the utmost respect for ATWT and its place in TV history. This is a sad week for all soap fans.
