I thought the plan was to introduce Annie's ex Jake. He could have been the one in a triangle with Josh and Annie rather than Rick. I vaguely recall that Kin Shriner was rumored to be under consideration for the role of Jake.

Yea, Quint only worked well as a short term character..an archeologist really has no long term story potential.  When Lisa came back in 95 it was the perfect time to just have them break up without any third party, Nola always resented having to twist her life for Quint and Quint really just was an egg head archeologist/adventurer and was bored being a family man (I always thought Nola was really looking for a replacement for the dad she never knew and Quint wasn't it..) When Henry died they could have brought Quint back for the funeral and show that there was no animosity between them, they just "grew apart" as Marland would write..

Lee was back on recurring until Long came back and Bea just disappeared. Again, having Bea around at the Boarding house as support for all the young characters living there made more sense then Sarah Shayne, who was just stuck listening to Reva, though I did love her giving Hawk hell.."You old FOOL!"

They did some chemistry testing with Josh and Jenna, they even had Vanessa teasing him about her..."So you think she's pretty???" (I always liked Van and Josh's sister/bro chemistry,,, I am glad they never screwed the up with having them together....)

Quint had potential, Long was just too busy establishing Alexandra as the HBIC. Quint had been established as a shrewd investor when he snapped up Diane's shares of Spaulding. After Alan disappears in San Rios, there's a scene where Alex is clearly maneuvering Vanessa and Henry to name Ross as president, and it's clear that Quint is the only one who sees the strings she's pulling.

Given how Reva, Blake and Harley slept through entire gene pools, I'm amazed Vanessa and Josh never crossed a line.

By Mid 85 the transformation of GL under Kobe/Long was complete.

The departure of Trish and Katie meant the last of any characters from previous regimes onscreen had been pretty much completed.

Only Ed (recast) Ross, Maureen and Vanessa remained as main characters.

I don't count Phillip or Rick as they had been children in the past.

In two years to have pretty much decimated the cast was no small accomplishment.

I think the wholesale cast changes were the result of a few factors.

The belief that faithful viewers would stick by the show no matter what (usually an older, less desirable demographic).

A misguided belief that a bunch of new young characters in more plot driven stories would attract new younger viewers.

Well a chunk of long term viewers did stick with GL but I would wager a number gave up when their favorites disappeared one by one.

Some new viewers enjoyed the goings on but perhaps weren't as faithful as the old guard.

If you enjoyed Tony and Annabelle for example, they were done and dusted in a couple of years. Beth and Phillip, Rick and Mindy, Reva and Josh, Quint and Nola were also split up or moved on. Shorter storylines meant less engagement.

    • Dina was Jack, Ashley and Tracy's mom on Y&R.  Joanna was Lauren Fenmore's mother, played by Susan Seaworth-Hayes.
    • The funeral was not onscreen - only the Brooks returning home after the service. Not aware of any available clips.
    • Very very well said!!!

I would only add that Sam Ratcliff is frequently named in regards to certain AW comedic turns.  And, we know from Carolyn Culliton (tweet 2024) that Sam & Gary put their heads together & came up with that gorilla.
    • I knew you would be so excited seeing your girl Brookey as #1!!!! She also WINS as to Frequently Married!!!
    • Yes, Stacy does this both for early DAYS & early GH. I have written some for her, for DAYS. But just one tiny point & that is that she only deals with DVDs. I realize that is not the point of your posting but it seemed the right thing to clarify. I know that you know that video tapes is past, not present.
    • Hahahha I think sleeping with almost all of your daughters's boyfriends and husbands and getting pregnant... definitely gives Brooke the right to top 1 place. Long live the whore of Beverly hills.

    • CurlyQGrl has DVDs of some episodes, that they can sell, but that doesn't matter. What is helpful: they describe the scenes on the tapes, so you can read that as recaps without ordering anything. Doesn't really give storylines, though, which is what you asked for.  Here's the links anyhow. full menu https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/menu.html GH page https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/menu.html GH 1960s https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1960s.htm
    • I would argue that Another World never played "everything" for laughs. Even when there were comedic scenes in some storylines there were other storylines that were not intended as comedy.  You give 1988 as the end point, and Mary was on the canvas from August 1986 to February 1989, so she must have overlapped with the despised laughs you are referring to at least half of the time she was there. I honestly can't recall any real comedy that Mary would have been part of. I don't think she was lighthearted about choosing between two husbands, MJ's prostitution, Kathleen's death, or even her son Scott dating her daughter Cheryl.  I would have said that the amount of comedy depended on the head writer and there was more comedy under Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin in 1984 than subsequent headwriters. I guess there was an outbreak of more comedy when Cecile kidnapped Cass from his wedding in 1986, but in general the Sin Stalker wasn't presented as funny, Mitch's return wasn't funny, John's arrival wasn't funny, Reginald wasn't funny. The tone was serious even if the plots verged on the ludicrous. And maybe that's what you mean -- but I would make a distinction between intentional comedy and storylines I can't take seriously for other reasons.
    • I'm excited for us to get back to a full weeks worth of episodes and also us beginning to move into the episodes filmed once the show premiered. We're already starting to see changes in the lighting and the way certain characters are styled. Of course we know this week we have our first recast as well. After the big Eva reveal, I hope the show continues to move into a positive direction and that we see them starting to fix some of the things we've all had issues with.
