That's why I tend to believe those on here who've said that Peggy, and not Holly, was the love of Roger's life, despite latter-day efforts to say otherwise.

That was a total retcon. He never loved Holly. It was Holly who was obsessed with him, since she was a teenager. By the time she married him, she was pretty much over it. She was in love with Ed.

Yes, Peggy was Roger's one true love. I wonder if Fran had not left if these stories would have turned out much differently.

The only reason they married, really, was because of Christina. Roger wanted to raise her, and since Rita had snapped up Ed, Holly felt it would be good for Christina to grow up with her real father.

I wish we could get footage of Deerfield and see how she played the part. I remember Deerfield quipping in a blurb in Soap Opera Digest in the 90's " I was married to the chief of staff and wore polyester".

Very different from Maureen, much softer, I guess you could say. It's kind of miraculous how Maureen got the audience to accept her. I remember seeing her on her first episode and thinking, "Are you kidding me?" But she had great chemistry with both Mart and Michael right away. That definitely helped. She made Holly her own.

Apropos of nothing...I was wading through some posts, and found out that Lee Lawson had once played Audrey Peters' stepdaughter on Love of Life.

The soap world was small...lol.

Maureen said after she took over that Deerfield would drop by the studio and stand over by the cameras and watch her. She said it made her self conscious and she would try to hide her face behind her long hair.

My Mom always referred to Deerfield as "The blonde Holly"

I appreciate seeing the Frank & Eleni clips and episodes again. I loved MK’s Eleni during the whole story with Alan-Michael and SS Blake as a rival along with Frank’s unrequited love there 1991-92.

Unfortunately after Kanakaredes left the two replacement actresses, Kaplan and ER were very subpar compared to MK and the character was also neglected so badly it was hard to care about.

Frank having the affair with Signy Coleman’s Annie Dutton was the most interesting thing the couple had in years yet they wrote off Eleni for good shortly afterwards and Frank for whatever reason just existed there for the rest of the show.

@alwaysAMC I liked it when gl would play special music over the intro. They played going to the chapel for frank and Elena's wedding and happy days are here again for Ross's Election nightmare.

Oh wow, that was really cool! They played it the entire intro and through the opening, how fun ) I didn't watch more after that, I want to save it for when I watch that year in full, but very cool and they had a ton of extras on that set. I miss those days.

I was always glad to get a break from hearing "Hold on to Love." Oh, how I hated hearing that song. Reminded me so much of something John Williams uses in one of Steven Spielberg's movies.

It felt that way for me, an occasional viewer at the time. Then it seemed Peggy disappeared. It was a very different Holly then too. A wide eyed naive young blonde babe type.

DEERING was very different, a wide eyed blonde babe type, maybe even the dumb blonde stereotype. I think it took a while for viewers to adjust to Maureen Garrett. I think I saw her first few scenes on a plane, returning to Springfield, thinking, that can't be Holly.

But the adjustment didn't take long. Garrett proved herself early on.

Best Headwriter or EP that never worked at GL that you wish that they'd got a shot?

  • Member

Laurence Caso as EP.

HW?...geez, everyone left that I'd trust I don't think would fit. Although I only really know CBS writers. Bill Bell is too bitchy, somehow.

Actually, @P.J. , I think Bill Bell's career started at GL in the '50's with Irna? But don't quote me on that, lol.

I think just about every soap scribe that I know of and admire worked on GL at some point, except maybe Sam Hall, Gordon Russell and Henry Slesar; and I'm not sure whether those three would've been equipped to write for a show like GL.

Well, nuts. I knew he'd worked with Irna, but wasn't sure about GL. It's in his wiki.

I do wonder if Slesar had any involvement, off the credits, in Sara's stories from the early to mid '70s (Lee Gantry to Kit Vested), as they remind me of his work.

Especially the Lee Gantry storyline. I wish we could see when he killed Miss Foss, because that sounds INSANE.

Lynn Deerfield did a week of Match Game in Sep 1976. She was still on GL when they were taped. She's quite cute, charming, and a great sense of humor. In her first episode she didn't too great with the matches but episodes 2-5 she did quite well including helping a contestant win big cash. Lynn said she had originally been a contestant herself on the show in 1969 and was the big winner of $450 (which was the max then). She joked that she didn't know whether to cash the check or have it framed. When asked who her team captain was she said some guy named Burt Reynolds. In 69 he wasn't big name and she didn't know who he was at the time. Gene jokes wonder what happened to that guy and Lynn gives a grin.

Gene Rayburn and Richard Dawson were quite handsy/flirty with her. Gene kissed her on the lips in her first episode and through out the week they keep telling her how pretty she is and Richard tries to tickle her several times. They also like her laugh and they all agree she sounds like Ron Palillo on Welcome Back Kotter. Lynn said he gets paid to do his laugh.

I wonder why she never did anything else on TV after GL ? She could have easily done another soap. Did she leave GL on her own or did the Dobson's replace her with Maureen Garrett ?

Did Holly arrive in 1970 or 71 ?
