Saving the Daytime Emmys from extinction

Despite the flub ups and screw ups, I thought this was one of the best Emmy shows in years. Alot of it had to do with the fact that the graphics package and the music were all something you would see/hear at an awards show, instead of that trashy White Cherry guitar music.

Another thing. I noticed some of the words were being cut off from the screen during the pre-show and telecast and when I saw screencaps at Daytime Confidential, I realized that they were broadcasting the ceremony(where available) in HD! I do believe this is a first for the Daytime Emmys. The guys in charge of the ceremony deserve props for even that. I also noticed there were a lot LESS screaming soap fans in the audience. Maybe it was the small theater they occupied, who knows. But I was SO happy not to have to hear annoying DAYS/GH fans in the audience.

Not saying it was perfect by any means. Still pissed that B&B didn't even get a Best Show speech. But this show was easily one of the best I've seen in years.

This article also states that this production company will run the Emmys again next year and that even if it doesn't get on Network TV, they will push it into syndication.

My CW is not in HD. I would have loved to have seen that.

Now that you mention it, I really was very happy about the lack of screaming fans. On the other hand, it's a double edged sword. It sort of reflects the fact that ABC in general (The View, GMA) did not support these awards (except for those two GH ads...which IS something). Lack of screaming means lack of a young fan base...and that has negative implications for the genre, IMO.

But I fully support what you say. This was a much better award show...if only it hadn't all been so rushed at the end.

Kudos to some (tepid?) ratings success...and to Errol/SON for apparently being the first to lead with that story!

According to early estimates released by Nielsen Media Research, The CWโ€™s telecast of the โ€œ36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awardsโ€ in which โ€œThe Bold and the Beautifulโ€ took home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for the first time, averaged a 2.4/4 in households during its broadcast from 8:00 to 10:00 PM on the netlet. The show averaged approximately 3 million total viewers.

Earlier in the evening ....

It's a good news/bad news thing. Bad news: Lowest ratings ever, and the network was still in 5th place. Good news: Best ratings for CW in quite a while, and ratings were higher than some projections.

Let's see how it goes....

From TV By the Numbers:

Even in the preseason we are an NFL nation, and NBCโ€™s Sunday Night Football, easily lead the network to the win with an average adults 18-49 rating of 2.8. CWโ€™s presentation of the Daytime Emmy Awards crashed in the ratings, pulling in just a 0.6 rating, down 50% from last year to a record low...

...CWโ€™s 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards delivered a 0.6 rating/2 share / 2.68 million viewers, down -50% from ABCโ€™s coverage of the event last year (1.2 rating/4 share on Friday 6/20/08). The Red Carpet pre-show special at 7pm drew an (0.3 adults 18-49 rating/1 share / 1.21 million)

Favorite quotes from Sara Bibel's press room notes:

Vanessa Williams

I watch TV during the daytime....Iโ€™m a talk show junkie so I start off with the Today show then I move to Wendy Williams, then The View โ€” this is when I have time. Then itโ€™s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Design on a Dime.

But she doesn't watch soaps!

Heather Tom

[B&B's submitted episodes] is one of the best shows Iโ€™ve ever seen on daytime, and Iโ€™ve been doing this a long time...I was never on The Young & The Restless when they were in the phase that theyโ€™re in right now. It feels very much like home on The Bold & The Beautiful. I know the players. I know the crew. I know the production designers.

Kim Zimmer

Iโ€™m feeling a sense of relief in a way because it was hard work trying to keep the show the show on the air and trying to stay positive in what was doom and gloom. When you have an Executive Producer who makes an announcement to the cast and crew that weโ€™re all on an airplane thatโ€™s crash landing and we donโ€™t have parachutes. Youโ€™re told that and itโ€™s like, โ€œSo why are we going to work?โ€ The last couple months have been extremely exhausting. I think weโ€™re all feeling a sense of relief, and ennui. Itโ€™s the end of an era. This will never happen again, where a show is celebrating 72 years.

Not much to do with the age of the fan base ... There simply weren't fans in the audience because there wasn't space for them.

Personally, I missed the fans. It's good to have that energy there cheering people on. But I still liked the show.
