The Snowflake Ball

The Snowflake Ball has began and the guests are arriving one by one on the horse-drawn sleighs. We have people dancing, we have people arguing in the background... and Josie, dressed in her brand new dress coming down the stairs, announced as the princess of the ball... to Mathew's awe and surprise.

On the other side of town, we have Rachel confessing to Mac in their bedroom about her financial contribution to Sam's success. Mac, of course, is irritated and disappointed by how Rachel hid all of this from him. We later see them driving in their blacked-out windows car in a powerful scene, in which Rachel asked him to forgive her. Sadly for Iris, it seemed that Mac is going to forgive his wife. And even more sadly for Iris... the first thing that Mac wanted to do after arriving at the ball was to support Amanda...  and not dance with Iris who got the cold shoulder instead. One positive for Iris though - Amanda and Sam's argument lead to the word divorce been uttered. By both of them.

In a contrasting picture to Sam and Amanda's toxicity, we have a happy on the outside couple - Donna and Michael... not without a sinister presence that is becoming evident in their lives. Iris has set her eyes on Michael and after stealing a dance with him, she warned him that she doesn't care if he's married. He turned her away, but we'll see for how long. Donna, be careful darling, your bestie wants to be with your man.

Talking about Donna... she was so passive aggressive with Sharlene - tried to make her ashamed of not being able to fit in among all the rich and glamorous at the ball. Even corrected her dress in a very condescending way. Thank God Sharlene didn't fall for her tricks... and in the end of the evening, it seemed like she and John are so happy together, far from these fake people in dresses and tuxedos. John caressed her cheek and told her that he feels much happier... when they are alone. Oh, Sharlene, you've struck gold, honey.

The evening got to a soapy climax when Vicky decided it's time to say Yes to Jamie's marriage proposal. At this same moment, we also had Lisa realizing she needs to get Jamie BACK. We saw Lisa struggling to go past the crowds of dancing people... and we were left with a suspense if she'll be able to come and stop the moment just in time, before Vicky says Yes.

At that exact moment... snowflakes started falling from the ceiling. Making it even harder for her to get to Jamie.

The episode was probably one of the best soap opera episodes I've seen - full of drama, glamour, beautiful dialogue and suspense.

OVERALL -

Favorite moment - Iris trying to get her hooks into Michael.

Iris was always a bit delusional about what was hers! Wants to get back what was "mine". Yeah, right. In whose universe, only in your mind.

But, yes, John & Sharlene were really solid for a long time.

When we raised money for the AW Fan Bench in Central Park, one of the compiled videos we offered as an inducement to people to donate, was "A Cory Christmas" & in it was the Snowflake Ball. Now, that is 3 files in my usual video hosting site, same name, Vol. 1, 2 & 3.

Yes, that's one of the main reasons I started watching this time. I finally saw that a long period of episodes was being covered. And just recently one channel added all of the missing May to September 1991 episodes... which was amazing.  I asked them if they could upload the missing 1992 episodes... politely... and I truly hope they do. I would love to be able to watch 1989 to 1992 completely. Since I've heard from people here that these are quite strong years.

BTW, years ago I had tried and dipped my toes into 1991, since this was the only available period on youtube and I watched 5-6 episodes from May 10th and after... as I recall. I was in love... but since I saw that I had only a short period available (May 1991 to October 1992)... I said to myself... better wait when more years are uploaded on youtube. Don't spoil it for yourself. And this year... this dream came true.

I am so happy to hear that. Their chemistry is off-the-charts! I would miss it if they were not together.

And about my darling Iris - I love how she is tearing the family one by one, piece by piece. Like a jackal. She divides and conquers. We'll see when she'll hit a dead end though... she can't always win after all. If only in 2024 soaps had antagonists like that.

December 20th 1988

I'll try to be shorter in my reviews, since... reading the last few ones myself today, I realized I'm being over the top and probably gonna bore you guys with my stupid monologues that go on forever... I'll try to be more brief.

So what was the episode about - the end of the Snowflake ball was a new beginning for a lot of people. Sam and Amanda realized how foolish their conflict was and they resolved it with a dance. Iris announced to the whole room that Vicky had consented to Jamie's proposal. Sharlene and John had a lovely romantic dance alone... and he, the gentleman that he is, left Sharlene with a promise... to continue... next time. Sharlene was truly transported in ANOTHER WORLD - a place where only new love can put you.

Iris's devious plan to cause drama for Amanda and Rachel... didn't succeed and in the end of the day she got the worst karma. She was the one... alone, the one that got the cold shoulder three times by Michael... the one still waiting for Dennis after all of the guests had gone home. IF she was really waiting for him... I'm not 100 percent sure... I think she knew he wasn't going to come, but wanted to appear like a victim to Mac. To emotionally manipulate him. Mac, of course believed her.

In the last scene we saw them dancing in the silent empty ballroom. Iris and the only man who can tolerate her and love her - her own father.

@Paul Raven @Xanthe @jam6242 @Khan  @dc11786@janea4old @Vee @DRW50  Eddie Drueding shared this tidbit revealing Missy Reeves appeared (very briefly) on AW.

WE LOVE SOAPS TV: Your bio recently started listing you as having been on ANOTHER WORLD before SANTA BARBARA.
Melissa Reeves: I was an extra on there once. It was really short-lived. I mean really short-lived. I don’t remember much about it. I wasn’t watching soaps at the time. It was just about getting enough money together so I could pay for the crazy dance classes.

He's been posting quite a few pictures from several soap magazines from the 1960s and 70s.  All different soaps, not just AW.

Also, Eddie is trying to identify this actor from a 1986 appearance on AW.
