It was just stupid and "soapy" to the point of hilarity, but it did give Victoria Wyndham a chance to act again after being in the doldrums (and then that Justine fiasco).

It also essentially eliminated any chance that Cory Ewing (or Hobson or Delaney) would return as a character in the future.

That character lasted longer than I remembered. The most memorable thing about him was his exit - wasn't he turned to ash or something? The actor went on to take over for a thankless role on OLTL after Brandon Routh had that supposedly messy exit.

None of that stuck with me. Scanning through the AWHP synopses for 1998 and 1999 made me realize that I had also completely forgotten about Scott Guthrie who claimed to be Carl's brother. That seemed like rather a mess.

The only reason I remember him is because I wondered if they were trying to capitalize on any appeal Bronson Pickett had in his (awful) ATWT role.

They could have just given Cory Ewing a nickname I suppose...

True. I wonder if that is the only instance of more than one baby born on a soap (as opposed to being introduced later in life) being given the same first name and with no scope for different versions of the name for everyday use. I suppose there are probably shows that did get cluttered up with Jrs and IIIs that I can't think of. But although Cory Hobson and Cory Hutchins were both named after Mac neither is related to him by blood.

Well, that's kinda like what's happening now on DAYS, with two characters - specifically, Alex and Xander - sharing the same name (Alexander Kiriakis).

Howard Rollins hosting Fridays, ABC's short-lived version of SNL, not long before he joined AW. Fridays often didn't do very much with their hosts, but Howard is heavily involved in a number of sketches and even a pre-tape. He does a great job. This isn't the full episode but most of it.

(one sketch has brownface [involving Amos & Andy])

Were Alex and Xander both born on the show? I think they are excluded regardless by my second criterion, that there be no obvious different nickname.

It's relatively common for soap babies to be named in honour of another character. On AW, Sandy Cory named his son Alexander but they called him Alex. Jamie was called after Jim Matthews. Wally Curtin was named after his father Walter. Baby Steven was named after Steve Frame. Grant Perry Todd was named after his grandfather who would die by the end of the year and the recently deceased Perry Hutchins. Jeanne Ewing was called after Larry's mother who either died right before or soon after his daughter's birth. Brittany's baby was named Peter Reginald officially but she secretly called him Little C. One way or another they avoided having two living characters with exactly the same name.

Don't be too impressed -- I relied on the AWHP babies page to refresh my memory on some of these. I always think what a shame it was that most of these kids were written out before they could be SORASed to high school.

Using a tool, using it well, is that not impressive?

I shared your list, with credit & someone has already made an addition.

Billy Cooper adds:

Twins Michael and Marianne Randolph. Marianne was named after her grandma Mary Matthews. Michael was named after Mike Bauer ( A Cross-Over character from GUIDING LIGHT's Springfield ).

I'd like to see a script reference before I believe that Michael Randolph was named after Mike Bauer.  Pat and Mike had a strong sexual attraction on AW (while she was married to John) and they almost had an affair.  Somehow I don't think Pat would have named one of her twins after Mike. That would be kind of creepy.  I suppose it's possible, but I won't believe it unless I see it in a script or at least in an episode synopsis.  Of course, it doesn't really matter to anyone else whether or not I believe it.  Everyone else is free to believe it if they choose to. No argument from me.

I understand. Now someone else suggests that Matthew Cory was named so after the Matthews family. Obviously, people do use family names in that way. Mostly I find this interesting.

I tend to agree. I don't see any description that supports Mike Bauer as namesake and also he had been gone for a couple of years by the time Michael Randolph was born. I suppose there could be a case to be made that in the story Bauer had become a fond memory but it seems like a bit of a reach. But I would be happy to be proved wrong if someone does have evidence that Pat and John were thinking of Michael Bauer in 1970.

The difference though seems to be that we can definitely point to an onscreen moment where Matthew's name was discussed. See Dec 18, 1980.

If I'm not mistaken, Lumina started off as an umbrella storyline involving a rich guy who was the head of a cult (called Lumina), coming to Bay City for an unknown reason.  But after the Lumina Ball, it it left the "umbrella" stuff behind, and took on a supernatural thing about Amanda being the reincarnated lover of some old man who never aged -- or an old man who had inhabited the body of a young man. Jeeze! It was nutty, farcical, and certainly did not go along with what it had seemed to be at the beginning.   I'd really love to know what was planned originally for that plot.

The original start of the storyline with Jordan Stark and his sidekick Zak Wilder had an almost Batman and Robin feel to it.  Was Jordan Stark, the wealthy owner of the Lumina Corporation intended to be like Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises?  Did TPTB originally intend them to be Bay City crime fighters at night?

I actually like that idea more than how the story played out- lol .

Yes, Matthew Cory was named after the Matthews family.  Specifically Russ Matthews, who had become Rachel's confidant after Janice Frame's death and Rachel's pregnancy with Mitch Blake's child.  If my memory is correct, Russ is one of the only people Rachel told about the baby's true paternity while she was still pregnant.  I feel confident this would be referenced in the episode synopsis on the AWHP. And scripts of course, if they are available.  Those episode tapes may actually be archived, because weren't they in 1980?

I believe the twins were born approximately 4-years after Mike Bauer left Bay CIty. Mike left AW in 1966 and the twins were born in 1970.

The Bauer connection seems  dubious.
