I disagree. While new families (Loves, McKinnons, Harding / Todds) and characters Felicia, Cass & Wallingford were prominent before DePriest arrived, the Matthews, Ewings and Corys were still represented. DePriest wrote out the Ewings, Matthews and Harding / Todds completely. The McKinnons & Loves were mostly recasts and written differently or new characters were added to the families. Several popular characters were killed off - Sally, Zane, Quinn, Maisie. Violence and misogyny replaced humour and intelligence.

I agree with this but in fairness 1985 with the Plains Motel drug gang and Lesoleil had been weirdly distracting. The introduction of Victoria and, later, Michael were probably the best things that emerged from that period before Depriest came in, but Nancy was isolated after Perry's death and there didn't seem to be much for Mac and Rachel to do. Sandy and Jamie were gone. Brittany was probably poorly-conceived and definitely mishandled.

I get what they were trying to do by making Lesoleil have so many different unrelated connections to Bay City and in some respects I probably prefer that to Depriest's solution of Reginald as one international supervillain having an impact on at least half of the people in town.

  • A nice achievement to see the thread has reached 1,000 pages. I'm forever saddened that almost all of what was apparently AW's best is gone, never to be seen again, but I've been fascinated by AW ever

  • Go to the 32 minute mark of this 1968 episode of AW- Audra Linley’s Liz is featured.

  • Fun fact: This thread was my first introduction to SON 😂

December 1982 through mid 1985 was my second favourite era. But I agree that the last half of 1985 was a mess. The thing is that the elements were there to make it great again without discarding Larry, Clarice, Cory, Jeanne, Liz, Quinn, Thomasina, Carter, Grant Jr., Maisie, Nancy, Peter, MJ… Sally could have left town with Kevin after finding out that Catlin got Brittany pregnant. Killing her off was stupid. Quinn and Zack had great chemistry. There was plenty of story for their families. It took a decade before there were prominent black characters again.

De Priest said the show would focus on the Loves, McKinnons and Corys.

McKinnons-Vince was recast, there was new MJ who was given a hooker past(totally out iof charcter and not suited to the actress) Kathleen left by the end of the year as did Jake, Cheryl came from nowhere played by an inexpperienced actress and Ben vanished.

Loves- Donna was poorly recast and changed character, Nicole came and went, Peter got a personality transplant, Marley depated and Vicky was poorly recast.

Corys- Mac and Rachel. Neal replaced by Adam, both of whom we'd never heard of. No Iris, no Dennis, no Sandy.Nancy left. Rumor of Pam returning but never happened.

The show was a mess.

I know Ben was already long gone by the time DePriest arrived, but it makes no sense to me he wasn't recast when they knew Jake was leaving. That's what has always confused me when I see this article. Did she really have no idea Tom Eplin and Julie Osburn were leaving? The McKinnons could not continue to exist as a family by 1987 - they just weren't strong enough.

I think bringing Ben back and putting him in a triangle with Nancy and Vicky could have been interesting. I would not have recast Ben though. I thought Richard Steen had a lot of charm and I would liked to have seen what he could do with an adult storyline. There was way too much unnecessary recasting on Another World.

Keeping Nancy around and having her jealous of an grown up Amanda would have been storyline gold. Nancy was use to her drama being the centre of Ada, Jamie, Mac and Rachel's worlds. Having their focus move to Amanda and forcing Nancy to grow up was the natural story progression.

Yes, that is exactly what I would have wanted for Nancy and Amanda. And I would have handled the first adult-ish Amanda's story completely differently because truthfully I don't think there was anything in that that Nancy could resent. But I also wouldn't have had Ada pressure teenage Nancy to marry Dr Chris Chapin.

I've never known what happened to Kevin Thatcher after the character disappeared from the show. I only recall hearing suppositions from viewers.

Was it ever firmly established where he went, and with whom?

I thought Liz took him to California to live with Alice.

I had heard that theory from a few folks, too, but then they confessed that THEY had only heard it from other viewers, as a way to explain the boy's absence from the show.

I don't know if this is a viral fan explanation, or "canon" from being mentioned on air.

(I realize that this is not a burning question, after 40 years, LOL, but it popped into my head and I was curious.

According to the Another World Homepage Liz and Kevin left together to go to California. I remember Liz saying goodbye to Catlin and saying she was leaving with Kevin. I just don’t remember where she said they were going. Liz’s last episode (June 10, 1986) is not available on YouTube to verify.

June 10, 1986 Synopses

“Liz told Catlin that she is taking Kevin to California, encouraged him to move forward with his life, and expressed relief that Brittany had snagged Peter so that she was not free to pursue Catlin.”

They missed a trick by not having a rapid aged Kevin returning in the late '80s or early '90s. Liz could fuss over him and he'd be a rival for Matt - he'd be a brand new character but also a character established enough to be involved with the Corys.

Yup. Another missed opportunity.

Oh, cool. I'm glad it was mentioned on-air. I hate when characters just drop off the face of the earth without explanation. It's one of my soap pet peeves.

Most soaps miss all kinds of opportunities to re-introduce legacy children to the canvas.

Virginia Dwyer lived until 2012. Had she not been fired in 75 would she probably have been axed sometime in the next decade. later when AW was undergoing one of it's regular revampings.

Or perhaps having Mary still around would have kept the Matthews more prominent in the story. That might have meant Liz going earlier, as 2 older Matthews ladies would have been deemed too many.

Virginia Dwyer Orbits Another World by Harvey Peck

The most successful daytime drama on NBC, Another World, has just passed the five year mark and gives every indication of being around as long as-network television. Virginia Dwyer, a veteran of daytime serials, who started back in the radio days, has been orbiting on Another World as Mary Matthews since the series started and the fact that she has chosen to renew her contract at every option time surprises even Miss Dwyer. "I've had running roles on other shows (The Secret Storm, Guiding Light and Young Dr. Malone) but there was always a desire to move on to something else. Here, every day is a new challenge and I think that's why we're so successful."

VIRGINIA, a very attractive woman, has been at it so long she has seen herself suffering dramatically first as an ingenue and, in recent years, as a "mature" woman. She has also seen daytime dramas mature during that period. "I think the half-hour format motivated the change. It gave the writers more time to develop sub-plots and the actors and directors also responded to the expansion of ideas." Since the daytime serial is the last outpost of live drama on TV, it has the advantage of drawing its casts from the best actors trodding the. Broadway rounds. Another World is no exception. "I was doing very well as a radio actress when the ten inch tube arrived on the scene,"she recalled. "But I went over to New York's Channel 5, then known as WABD Dumont, and volunteered to work in live drama for little more than the experience. The lights were so hot my makeup melted on my leading man's clothes. But I was a television actress, and I've been at it ever since. " I was lucky. Today's youngsters are so talented it's frightening. I watch them on our show bringing their experience with the' 'method' or improvisational theater into play and inspiring all of us with their vitality. "But eventually they must leave and prove themselves in theater or motion pictures and it's a very rough road."

Virginia points out that today's contracts for daytime actors are quite liberal about time off for other theatrical ventures. Her husband on Another World is played by Broadway veteran ShepherdStnidwicke who is currently appearing in London as one of the stars of Arthur Miller's "The Prize." "The writers simply eased him out and can bring him back as soon as he winds up in the. play," explained Miss Dwyer.. "He's a tax accountant in our story and, according to the script, he's off on a world tour for business and you can imagine how long that can take."

"ONE OF THE principal factors, in what Virginia considers the turnaround in daytime serials from old-fashioned soap operas to top dramatic entertainment is respect for the audience. "There was a time when they laughed at the housewives at production meetings and practically tossed the scripts together. Now we think our daytime viewers are extremely intelligent and not just people seeking vicarious emotional thrills. Naturalism s the trend in daytime drama and the audiences appreciate the quality."

When she's on call Virginia works from 7:45 a. m. until 5 p.m. at a studio somewhere in Brooklyn. "I couldn't find it on my own but they pick us all up with a- cab," she smiled. On radio she was often a mean, conniving young girl but on TV her face and demeanor have typed her as a nice lady. "I think I'll 'stick with it," she concluded. "Because after all these years in front of a camera I'm finally learning how to relax when that red light is on."
