Soaps on Late Night?

I'm always more than a little reluctant to start new threads on message boards - especially, ones that posit wild questions and theories. Nevertheless, lol...

What do we all think about soaps moving to the late-night hours someday? For example, what if Y&R and B&B (forget about ATWT, since I don't hold much hope for their survival past 2010) were to move out of the usual daytime hours and into the post-"Letterman"/post-"Craig Ferguson" shot? Would there be less direct competition or demands on viewers' time? Would you still watch (live, or on DVR)? Would there be lowered expectations on the part of the networks, possibly result in less interference and more creatively satisfying product?

(Why do I feel like I should offer a hotline or something, lol?)

Frankly, I'd like them to try darker, more racier serials in late night. I think they'd have more creative leeway to accomplish this in late night too. I know they tried it with that late night Valley of the Dolls serial that aired in syndication in, but at a purely network level, its never been done before. But, oh well, that's never going to happen.

That's just it. I think the current, existing soaps could become darker and racier if they were moved to late-night. For one thing, we wouldn't have to pretend anymore that each new gay character that comes along is a first for the genre.

^^^LoL, yep. I'm bored. No harm intended with my rolling eye. But I'll contribute to your thread.

I'd love to see a racier Y&R with all the sex that has been going on lately. A naked Vail Bloom may just win over more fans. Then again Braeden may decide to UP the raunchiness in his scenes, so.....

Well what's another 30 more? LoL.

I feel like too much of what we've come to accept and whatever is left of these existing daytime soaps identities would be thrown out of the window id they moved to late night and had to revamp their formats with raunchier content. We've seen how easy it is for the soap purists here to complain, even about minor details, I can't imagine how an extreme shift in content would go over with most hardcore fans, but I may be wrong.

I think it's best to start all new serials, without historical baggage, in late night. Hell, I'm pretty sure they'd probably have better production budgets than most daytime soaps.

I've actually dreamt a long time about a new Dark Shadows revival airing in late night. I think they could really push the gothic drama, and it would be creepy and exciting to watch a serial like that in late night, assuming it's not written like a cartoon, of course.

      I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?

      I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. They're connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters.

      The woman who was the co-chair of Latinas for Trump is now complaining about his targeting immigrants that she thought were "safe." I also read a puff piece from yet another "insider" journalist who lives to normalize fascists - this one with a tech bro who was venting off the record because he thought voting for Trump was cool and would show up the Democrats and maybe we'd get Greenland, but now he's getting upset.  These people still support Trump, and Republicans, they just want to make sure they get credit for being respectable. And they will get it.

      I really do wish someone could. Just a few characters in very simple backdrops, with very real problems that are just a little larger than life, like the '50s and '60s. All the characters having a level of dignity or respect. And their inner lives are what dominate the story, even if there are outside forces at play.

      It's a lesson to never be loyal because once your use is up, you're shown the door. MSW was the only bright spot for CBS for awhile, and once they were back on top... they promptly sabotaged the show as a repayment for all that the show had done for the network.

      The show made a mistake in not bringing in more McKinnon kids, specifically bringing back Ben. Kathleen was leaving, and while I like you am very fond of Sally Spencer as MJ, that didn't seem to be a common view. They also decimated the character in a truly sick storyline. So that just left Cheryl.

      Between Gwen and Cat, the show often seems to side with those who cause lots of cruelty to Jack and Jennifer. I am half-surprised that the show hasn't brought Peter Blake back for more of the same.  I don't really know if there is a purpose for them in Salem now, but I do feel a sense of stability and rightness when Melissa Reeves is back in the role of Jennifer and back in the Horton house, in spite of...well, a lot of offcamera stuff we all know perfectly well.
