Tears in soap city starting to look real

I just saw that it's only 9 freaking mins! WTF?! I was expecting them to talk about the soaps for the entire segment. Cheap bastards! <_<

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY! Watch. Your. Mouth Rakesh! Nightline is like a network television God.

Nightline usually doesn't do full shows devoted to one topic. That hasn't happened since Ted Koppell hosted.

With that said, am I the only one who was disappointed "the queen" didn't speak on behalf of the other ABC show? It could be because ABC News' operations are typically New York/Washington based, but Julie Carruthers simply doesn't have the bitchy confidence Jill Farren Phelps does. Nor is she as controversial.

I find it so hilarious that Carruthers said she's trying to make the same show without making the budget cuts show onscreen. When it's painfully obvious that AMC is poorly budgeted and looks like some bastard 80's PGP show. I remembered watching one scene recently with Erica at a hospital with these bright, white walls and the lights were so hot that they cast some sort of 1940's film noir shadow on her. It just looked weird and very dated.

Also, she said they could do the show on a black curtain and people would still watch for their favorite characters. Didn't Guiding Light, in a way, just prove that stripped down doesn't work?

It's not just enough to have good story. Period. It has to come in a pretty package.

At least we were spared the other two New York shows. I'm not interested in seeing a drunk, horny Goutman flick his nasty tongue to the camera, nor am I interested in seeing Wheeler cry her way through a network television interview.

Well they could have atleast talk about other soaps for more than 3 seconds. I'm not angry at Nightline at all. I'm sure Frons pushed for an AMC coverage since SL will be there.

If Frons pushed for coverage of an ABC show, why not GH, since they just launched in HD?

Because AMC will be the first of the ABC soaps to go? It could also be that since SL is the star of the world, since you're going to use her, you might as well kiss up and play all Erica clips.

AMC will not be the first ABC soap to go. I don't know why everyone thinks this (and I'm not attacking you here Rakesh).

I think AMC was so heavily pimped is because their EP and HW have all said some pretty stupid sh!t lately, and I think having CM (who many fans still find hot) and SL (the Queen of Daytime) on Nightline was a PR stunt to kinda smooth things over. In reality, if you were going to do some little 10 minute story on soaps, you really don't need any of the actors, you could have just used EP's and HW's and maybe 1 noticeable actor from a particular soap.

Also, I think the people in the news division are a lot smarter than the people at ABCD and aren't going to pick some mob convoluted crap to air on Nightline. They were going to pick something iconic, Erica Kane and her many husbands. Luke and Laura's wedding (even though it was a brief clip). Pick something from their hay day, which they did.

Watched it. Blah blah blah. Those clips were crazy though. Did Erica really yell at a bear?? She deserved a pay-cut just for that.

And you deserve to be shot.

I thought it was a really good piece. The reason why they showcased AMC and OLTL was because it's in New York and it was easier for ABC News to gain access to these soaps than GH. And the reason why you heard more from AMC was because Susan Lucci is a name that everyone recognizes.

I agree with part of that. I enjoyed it as well, but check out what I posted in regard to this under the Entertainment News and Editorials section.

Well, I'll just copy and paste it:

Considering it was on ABC news, I don't think there was any need to mention Y&R and B&B which they did not mention. That being said, I feel that way because Y&R and B&B are the two highest rated soaps and are also AMC's time period competition.

Days was mentioned with the firing of D. Hall, but the show has been fine since her dismissal.

GL was mentioned because it's being canceled. ATWT is probably next, but why should ABC announce it before CBS?

AMC has been turing out as ABC's highest rated soap lately, and promoting it the way they did was smart. This was not a hard news piece, it was a fluff piece. I don't see any biasses here and I say that as someone with a BA in journalism.

There was nothing newsworthy to report about Y&R, B&B and ATWT. They announced something big that happened with Days (Hall's firing) and GL (their cancelation).

They touched on declining ratings (30 million at L&L's wedding to barely 3 million today).

AMC was what put ABC on the map. Last year it was on it's death bed. Today (it might still suck) it's doing better than GH. OLTL is pretty much as it's always been. Up one day, down the next.

Personally, I enjoyed the piece.

Yeah, about the only GH related thing they talked about was Luke and Laura's wedding. Very little OLTL too....they couldn't even mention that Agnes Nixon created it as well as AMC.

It seems like the ABC News reporter who put this story together has a Erica Kane and AMC fetish. LOL

I kept thinking, why not talk to Erika Slezak or someone from the cast of OLTL. I could understand more with GH, considering it was an NYC based story, but still.....AMC isn't the only soap ABC has you know.

What would be the point of talking to Slezak or someone else from OLTL? They couldn't have added much more than what Lucci, Cameron, JHC, and Agnes said, and plus, Valentini was interviewed, too.

Erica Kane is the #1 soap character in the country, of course the show is going to showcase her. Erika Slezak/Viki...not so much. I laughed when they showed Deidre Hall. Even the narrator sounded like he didn't quite know who she was lol

Worse, he could've said she was on Y&R, or referred to her character as "Dr. Marina Evans."

Kind of like OK! Magazine confusing OLTL with ATWT, when they mentioned recently that it was home to gay teens Luke and Noah.

You just know ol' Fronsie would've loved for that to be true, lol!

ATWT must have been so pissed about that mistake.
