Seeing these pluses are a good thing after the worst soap ratings week in history.

I can't wait to see all the other soaps in HD especially AMC since they need it more than other soap right now with that terrible video quality. GH is even better today in HD than it was yesterday especially since the hospital set was designed to support HD. Its like watching a whole new soap, its definitely a better soap to watch b/c of it and those you who actually appreciate HD will love it.

On the GL situation with Otalia, I don't think that GL is going to grow until it moves to Lifetime or whatever other network is in the running to pick it up for the fall. Lifetime will probably promote Otalia which will indeed help the show just like Luke and Noah did for ATWT back in late 2007. With the horrible timeslot constraint on the show and format that will keep GL from ever growing until moves to a new network. Just like DAYS, once its renewed the show will see a rebirth and will finally end the nightmare that its been in the last 5-10 years. I really hope ATWT moves with GL as soon as possible b/c that show is suffering too.

The truth is the networks are about to end their runs on affiliates. Their going to be free cable networks in the next decade which will start a brand new television revolution. NBC will probably be the first network to do that and the others will follow. GL's cancellation from CBS was the first sign that the days of networks on affiliates are about to end. Cable is the future for soaps and its probably better than being on the networks right now except for the fact that their still 20 million households without cable and most of those households watch soaps or other daytime programming so their will be a loss of audience there. Some of these cable networks like USA which is the most successful of all them might even merge with NBC.

One of the huge mistakes the soaps made in the last 20 years was not going worldwide successfully like B&B did to give their show an extra income of support. Also finding online or On Demand deals would've helped also. These soaps need to start looking out for themselves and stop relying 100% of these networks to support them.

GL's future looks brighter than it ever was as their already making plans to get some of their old cast back when they move and a whole new studio set.

I heard some rumors also that if CBS loses both GL and ATWT then they plan on either making B&B a hour or creating a new third soap with Bell as a spin-off to Y&R and B&B.

Thank you for posting that. I think that Lifetime would be doing themselves a big favor if they got Guiding Light on board. Soap fans are probably the most dedicated and loyal base in the world and they'll support its move over there.

Yes, they are on almost every day now, but that is something that started happening recently after the fan outpouring for them. The story had been bubbling under for much much longer before then.

I think the writing for GL as a whole is good. Just not enough people are watching to satisfy CBS, and CBS never cared enough to promote the things about the show that would entice new and lapsed old fans to watch, instead just kept instituting budget cut after budget cut.

Wow, great news about Lifetime!!

I'm sure that CBS would expand B&B to an hour...I think they're going to do it anyway once GL is gone from the network. They're just not doing it right away because it would look bad to the former GLers that might still be watching some of their daytime lineup and they don't want to alienate them right off the bat...i.e. that GLs cancellation was to make way for an extra half hour of B&B.

Starting a new spinoff of either Y&R or B&B or both would be the dumbest move they could ever make. History on soaps and primetime has shown, spinoffs almost never ever work, and end up weakening the original show by taking important characters, and the new show eventually tanks, and the original ends up toast as well.

Another World - Somerset. Another World - Texas. Alot of people still have the opinion that the AW spinoffs took them in the wrong direction.

General Hospital - Port Charles. Didn't they take Lynn Herring (Lucy) and Ken Shriner (Scotty) to Port Charles? I don't watch GH but I seem to remember that. Friends who watched, I remember them griping about Lucy being off of GH and on Port Charles which they never watched.

They would be complete idiots to attempt a spinoff of Y&R or B&B.

I have to ask you the same. Our studio HD signal was 100% healthy. It was on ABC HD channel not the regular ABC channel that's owned by the affiliate. Some people get these HDTVs and not know that there's a station for their HD programs. I even had some of my friends walk by in the studio say "WOAH! what soap is that, its so clear?", I knew right there and then that GH has definitely passed with their decision to go in HD. Now the quality of the show itself is a whole other thing but HD actually writes some of that off.

It looked pale and washed out on my HD channel, not to mention, the lighting on the show has become a mess. While the picture quality itself is clearer, the imperfections are magnified. It's strange, when Y&R went HD years ago, there was no noticeable change in lighting or in anything else, the sets and actors still looked good and the picture quality was of course better.

I agree with you and you know the secret my friend on one of the reasons why they actually cancelled GL. It was to make that extra half hour for B&B which is the one soap that doesn't need that extra half-hour. This was in the plans for years but now they probably really wanted to do it more than ever.

I would welcome the idea of CBS making a third soap to replace GL and ATWT as its just better for the soap industry to know that their still dedicated to soaps. GL and ATWT can start a new era for the soaps where they would finally be the show that we all want. A spin-off might be a bad idea but they'll probably need to move some of the minor established characters on those shows.

I had no problems with it at all, it depends on whether you prefer brighter lighting or darkness on your soaps but I will agree with you that Y&R did keep its format the same. People deal with the way they program HD very differently and eventually their going to get better at it as they are probably trying to figure out ways for the makeup to look good on the actors. Its only been out two days and Y&R has been in HD for eight years or since 2001 and Sony HD does the best job when it comes to justifying HD. No comparison there.

I probably worded it all wrong when I wrote it. I meant to say that the HD station that ABC is serviced by is owned by affiliate. So its up to the affiliate if they want to broadcast the program in HD as their were some cities without the HD signal for GH and that was b/c of the affiliates.

OK I get ou now. Te local here in Naples/Ft Myers is usuaslly stingy, airing Bb the next day. So I was very surprised when they went HD even with the local news. And of course all the local stations here jumped the gun on the government and followed the DTV change on the correct date, feb. 17.

The thing about HG is, thast when you look at certain actors, you can see the tiniest of pimples, never mind the wrinkles. Think Stephanie.,

Rangethatrover, there's not a lot of people that would not disagree with you but I watch all 8 soaps anyways so it doesn't matter to me how bad GH is, I'll keep watching it but recently I've only been watching it like 3 times a week b/c I don't tape it anymore. I respect your opinion definitely but it being in HD is probably the best thing about the show right now.

I actually read that B&B info on the internet somewhere a few weeks back and can't remember where I read it and heard the 3rd soap rumor on the radio station I listen to.

Where would the time slot be for BB if it goes to one hour? We have seen thast in most bit tv markets and even some small ones, GL airs in the mornings, and the affiliates air talk shows which are cheaper to air and more popular. If that poer does the ratings for the big markets again, check out the time slot for GL in the big markets like New York, Chicago, Miami, etc.

We all know they aren't going to do this though. Right now, that network is about cheaply produced and what will bring in the most dollars. I understand that from a business standpoint, but it's turning off viewers. Given the state of the economy, the ball is in the advertisers' court. Therefore, they are going to promote game and reality shows. We're already on overload from both of those, but they keep coming out with more and more inane ideas.

That's why I'm excited about the prospect of Guiding Light moving to a cable network, especially Lifetime. Andrea Wong is a genius and I think Guiding Light would finally get the promotion that it never did from that network. Outside of the Coopers, Guiding Light is firing on all cylinders and today was no exception.

Given the HUGE following that Otalia is attracting, the latest ratings show just how antiquated Niesen really is... who writes in a notebook or watches the show in real time anymore? [Okay, so I took early days last week and today to see the show... but it doesn't matter because I've never been a Nielsen family!]. Given how far we've come in technology, you would think they would come into the 21st century. The audience is there for this show... it just needs a home that it will give it the attention it deserves and will promote the show.

    • I am ready for our first full week in what feels like a while! They worked Sweeps month!
    • Beyond the Gates: A The Bold and the Beautiful: F Coronation Street: B Days of Our Lives: B- EastEnders: A+ Emmerdale: A- Hollyoaks: B+ General Hospital: C Neighbours: C+ The Young and the Restless: F For me, Beyond the Gates, EastEnders, and Emmerdale led the pack during Sweeps month, with Coronation Street and Days of Our Lives following. General Hospital and Neighbours sit in the middle with what I'd call a "take it or leave it" kind of Sweeps month, and the Bell soaps bombed (per usual).
    • Actors doing this is pretty common. I used to work for a company that produced a very successful sitcom back in the 70s. Actors who were guest stars on the show would ask to be provided tapes of their episodes. I assume they do it for a variety of reasons, i.e. to create a reel of their best work. I know of some soap actors who have uploaded saved work to YT. One is Ariana Muenker, who played Christine Valere on GL. She was uploading scenes from her many soap roles a few months back. Unfortunately, it looks like either she or YT took the channel down. Sharon Gabet and Mark Arnold help the EON YT channel by providing saved episodes. Along with EON eps, Arnold shared a guest stint he did on GL. Those episodes are really interesting because they involve the introduction of Nola's character, which was tied to the Roger storyline. When he came back after faking his death, he hid out at the boarding house. Nola being a snoop figured out something was fishy with him. She ended up helping the police. Very worth seeking out. I don't think anyone else has those episodes.  Makes you wonder if there's more out there than we know of because actors don't want to be bothered to run a YT channel. Can't blame them because it's a lot of trouble, but if only... I agree. While Lucci definitely used her fame from the show to build her brand and get work outside of AMC, Erica was always part of an ensemble. Yeah, she got a couple of whacky stories (like the "unabortion") but she never took over to the detriment of other actors and stories.
    • It must have been sometime in the early 80's. VI said he first heard about Marj Dusay's talent from CH. Hickland worked with her on Capitol.
    • Not having watched AMC was one of the reasons I hesitated to make the comparison, tbf. It's odd--I feel like I could argue Cassie, Olivia, Harley and Dinah suffocated the show along with Reva the last five years.
    • Laurie and Lance accompany Leslie to her Denver concert and she relies me on Lance for support.Unbeknownst to Leslie, Brad has had the operator make a special connection to the concert hall so he can hear her concert. The Maestro, realizing Leslie’s emotional torment over her failing marriage, tries to persuade her to tell Brad about the baby, and when she refuses, he writes a letter to Brad betraying Leslie’s confidence. After another fight with her mother about how learning about her parentage has upset her life, Laurie confides to Leslie that she feels cut off, outside. Stuart overhears this conversation, and Leslie has to tell him the whole story. She tries to explain fairly how Jennifer had left Stuart and actually only spent one night with Bruce, and faced the truth about Laurie only when she was forced to. Stuart is livid over this |betrayal and wants to confront his wife ‘now, but her doctor calls. Her one-year mastectomy checkup was fine, but he’s discovered irregularities in her cardiogram and doesn’t want her under any stress until further tests can be made. Stuart assures Leslie he won’t tell her mother he knows about Laurie until he can do it calmly, and doesn’t tell his daughter about the cardiogram.  When Chris continues to receive obscene calls, Snapper goes straight to the Beckers’. Ron insists he was home with Nancy, and she corroborates this. When she steps between an advancing Snapper and her husband, screaming, “We don’t have a telephone. He couldn't have called Chris,” Snapper finally has to believe her, and he leaves. But moments later Karen tells Nancy that Daddy went out while Mommy was in the shower. Ron insists it was just a few moments, for cigarettes. Nancy lets it pass, but the next morning finds a whole carton of cigarettes in a drawer  and asks why he went out. Ron coldly tells her she’d  better pull herself together, she’s letting this thing with Chris make her a little insane. Nancy ponders telling Chris but decides that all Chris would do is  badmouth Ron again, and she and Karen have no one but Ron and can’t leave him. When a telephone-installation man arrives with their new phone, Nancy asks him not to put it in. But Ron arrives and orders the installation made, telling Nancy she’s trying to run his life, as his mother did. When Nancy tries to call Chris, Ron frighteningly tells Nancy he’s done  everything they said he did, but it’s all her fault, as she never gave him what he needed. When he informs her he’s taking Karen away from her before she can ruin her, Nancy collapses in a catatonic state. Ron then calmly calls the hospital and requests help for his wife, “Fran Jackson,” who has had a breakdown.  Laurie, seeing the extent to which Vanessa will go to keep Lance to herself, warns Lance that his mother’s possessive feelings are unhealthy. Lance suggests Vanessa will consider Leslie a threat also when he learns that Les and Brad are divorcing and things will get easier. As soon as the hospital attendants leave with Nancy, Ron dials Legal Aid and has Karen tell Chris she’s all alone. Stopping only to leave a message for Snapper about where she’s going, Chris rushes to the Beckers’ apartment, only to realize that Ron’s tricked her. Ron sends Karen out of the room and, after expressing his hatred for all women, tells Chris he’s going to prove to her he’s a man. But Karen wanders back in as he has Chris pinned to the wall, and Ron’s mind snaps when he realizes his daughter has seen his perverted side. After smashing the wall mirror, he runs out, and Greg, terrified at learning where Chris is, arrives to find her comforting Karen. Chris takes Karen home, and after several days of fruitless searching for Nancy, she applies for temporary guardianship of Karen. Peggy and Jack set a New Years Eve wedding date, but Stuart is terribly upset to realize how irrational and incomplete Peggy’s plans are. When she suddenly makes all pertinent decisions in the space of a half-hour, Stuart tells Jack this doesn’t indicate certainty, but rather proves his point—she’s just trying to convince herself that the rape didn’t affect hers and it did. A chance remark by Stuart shocks Laurie into realizing he knows she’s not his natural daughter. When she hysterically screams out her alienation and her innate feeling that she was always 'different' he assures her with tears in his eyes that since they really love each other sincerely, it makes no difference; she’ll always be his daughter. Stuart explains that Jen still doesn’t know he has learned the truth, and he would like it to continue that way. In helping Brad pay his bills, Laurie finds Maestro Fausch’s letter and tells Brad that Leslie is pregnant. Ironically, to get to him with this news, she had to get |away from Leslie, and used a meeting with Lance as an excuse. When ‘Lance arrives soon after, he’s angry that Laurie lied, and she later has to explain that she has been helping Brad. Understanding her motives, — Lance agrees that she should continue to press him to |reconcile with Leslie. Brad, however, still won’t reconsider—in fact, the news makes him even more resolute. But Vanessa has had Laurie followed, and hits Leslie with a double blow. She gives her the report saying this proves her sister is involved with her husband, and then assures Leslie that Lance loves her, — not Laurie. Badly confused and hurt, Leslie lashes out by kissing Lance while he sits with her at the piano. Leslie then waits at the apartment for Laurie, and when she arrives, she bitterly accuses her of having an affair with Brad. Laurie angrily assures Leslie she  was with Brad with Lance’s full knowledge and that Leslie’s anger means she still loves Brad. She then explains to Leslie that Brad left her because he’s blind. In shock, Leslie rushes home to confront Brad, furiously berating him for treating her like a child who cannot decide for herself. But Brad, even with Leslie now aware of the situation, refuses to reconcile with her. When Leslie tells Laurie how unreasonable Brad has been, Laurie suggests that Leslie stop seeing everything from her own angle only.
    • In regards to the Reva vs Erica discussions... I think there was one main difference between the two characters.... Erica never took over/ate up airtime on All My Children.  While she was a larger than life character, she never took over the show and there were times she was even supporting and not the lead.... while Reva basically suffocated Guiding Light in the later years with her presence.
    • That was such a missed opportunity, especially with May sweeps.  And, it would’ve been a much better story for Naomi/Jacob than whatever’s going on with June
    • https://www.hulu.com/hub/tv/collections/9979 Amazed! But loving it. What this shows is GH Hulu out of top 15, GH is #2 & this was Saturday. Are we happy campers? Yes, at least for the moment, you bet we are.
    • I forget his name but Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth had the EP on after they didn't understand the 60s flashback episode due to the lack of original music. He felt that was one of his strongest episodes so he came on to explain to them just how much the music changes hurt the series. Basically, they only allowed him to pick a selection of episodes he felt the music was vital and other than that they didn't bother to save the music.  They kept music for prom and things like the Color Me Badd episode and for most of the musical acts but any music you loved from the opening of the show or just music played in random scenes was cut.  I know there are also some scenes cut but I don't know too much about that. The most glaring one was Clare's final scene being cut which is obviously a huge problem for a character who'd been around for so long. Overall I was able to enjoy my rewatch using the DVDs but without all of the original music it isn't nearly as good a show.
