Members marceline
No he wasn't. He's always been garbage. I spent the primary trying to get people to realize that his shotgun incident was a sign of poor character but people were hypnotized by the hoodie. An honest look at his behavior and history would show this was perfectly predictable. I just wish people would learn from this and stop falling prey to "vibes" but the number of people out here calling AOC the "opposition leader" tells me that won't happen.
Members Khan
Frankly, if the Democratic Party has become "toxic," then people like Fetterman and AOC are to blame.
Members janea4old
Just curious (asking members here) what's your opinion on who should be the "voice" or leader of the Democratic party. Who is the face of the policies that need emphasis? (I don't have an opinion yet myself. I find it all so confusing.) Members marceline
Nobody. Dems are a big tent. (Too big in my opinion) There can't be one voice. The idea that there needs to be just one ignores the reality that we're supposed to be a coalition. Also, I've watched the Dem voters screw over Obama, Hillary, Biden, and Harris. Ask yourself why anyone would want to be the voice of the party when all they'll get is non-stop criticism, sabotage, and treachery. No support. No encouragement. Just toxic abuse from "activists." Maxwell Frost posted then deleted this but he was absolutely right. Members Khan
IMHO, "activists" on the left or far-left are a big reason why we are where we are today. They hold the Democratic Party hostage, then blame the party when we fail to win elections. Nah, boo. We can't win, because y'all chase away the centrists, moderates and Independents who'd otherwise help us if you didn't look so ridiculous. Members janea4old
And Trump's team is supposedly deporting without hearings due to what they're claiming is a "national emergency" excuse. So they'd send you to Guantanamo or Columbia without giving you a hearing to prove that you're actually a U.S. citizen. Always important to avoid being arrested at a protest, due to what Maxwell Frost said, but especially now. Members Khan
This is why I've begun carrying my birth certificates - both the one issued by the hospital (complete with my footprints) and the one issued by the state - whenever I'm out in public. I've also alerted my mom to contact one of my closest friends, who is an attorney, and who would help her get in touch with the right people, should the need arise. Members janea4old
In my youth, in the 1970s, I did protests, and we underwent civil disobedience training. We were asked to do the training before protesting, so that we could truly understand what might happen, and decide individually for ourselves in advance, what might happen to me or my loved ones if I'm arrested or trampled or beaten. They suggested that even if you plan to only do protest marching - but weren't going to do active civil disobedience activities to get arrested -- that it might help to do the civil disobedience training anyhow. So I did take the training class, to learn. Some training was how to reason with counterprotesters and how to reason with rational police, but they also gave training on how to assess danger and when to walk/run away for safety. It seems like there's much less protest skill nowadays. Just social media telling you to go be trendy and march and yell. And also now there's much more violent counterprotesters and emboldened police. It feels more like the early 60s now. Members Khan
Yup! It's kind of like what George's favorite bootblack, Otis, says in an episode of "The Jeffersons": "You've got all these Black people talking about going back to Africa, but they wouldn't last five minutes over there!" That's how I feel about people on social media who try and shame others into marching and protesting. Those numb-nuts will never walk any of their talk, because they'd be the first to surrender or run away as soon as even one cop showed up, and they know it. By the way, @janea4old, thank you for your contributions - not just to this thread and to SON, but for the contributions you made BITD and continue to make in the name of advancing social justice. Members Marco Dane
Wow. What is the baseline for being fired from a government job these days? If you're MAGA, you're good, regardless of how unqualified, or what damaging baggage you have? And if you're NOT MAGA, you should just be fired across the board at the whim of the administration? https://www.mediaite.com/news/jd-vance-goes-to-bat-for-25-year-old-kid-elon-musk-staffer-who-resigned-over-racist-tweets-bring-him-back/
Members Khan
Pretty much. And because we live in very scary times, with food and gas prices continuing to rise, more and more workers will adopt MAGA philosophy simply in order to keep their jobs. Just like Scarlett O'Hara traded with the Carpetbaggers so she could keep Tara and keep herself from going hungry. Members janea4old
My parents raised me right. Since the 1950s, they were social justice Christians who befriended people of all faiths, no faith, and from all over the planet. I met many wonderful people when I was a child. Members Soapsuds
My dad and I were just discussing this the other day. Everyone is supposed to be carrying their documents in case they get stopped. It's insane. The community here in my city isn't happy about what could happen if you don't have your documents. There's a lot of misleading or false information going around.
Members I Am A Swede
I had a really, really low opinion of Trump before, but he has surpassed even my worst case scenarios already, and we're only a few weeks into his presidency..... I don't even want to think about all the damage he will do during the coming years. It's beyond terrifying.
