Maybe surge is the wrong word for semantics sake. Why are polls tightening up in even non partisan polls?

Because it's always been a tight race and because Harris has more work to do. She only got hard launched in July, which is unprecedented for any general election, ever. The fact that she's this competitive is remarkable. I happen to think she can break away from Trump and I happen to think it may not end up being close, but she's got more to do, particularly in the debate.

If Trump is experiencing a bump in the polls, then it's likely due to Trump supporters rallying around him in the wake of the "Arlington situation" and questions about his mental fitness for office.

The scary thing is that there are enough of them to give him a bump in the polls.

Any other politician (if you can refer to Trump as that) would have been dead and buried if they acted like Trump and said the things he does. It is still (and always will be) a mystery to me why nothing he says or does seem to hurt him in any meaningful way.

The narrative from the Beltway has incessantly been that any support for Harris has just been a "honeymoon" and people would reject her once they woke up and they saw she wasn't answering questions. I don't agree, but this has been drummed into the heads of the public for a month now. Add in the rampant racism and sexism that is the core of this country, and glowing media coverage of Trump (including treating his clear lies about paying for IVF, supporting abortion rights, marijuana, what have you), and I'm not surprised. The media has a way of building up every moment for Harris in a way where even if she succeeds, they can spin it as a failure. Her VP pick. The convention. Her CNN interview. And now, the debate.

I also think many people in this country have always liked Trump (a byproduct of 30-40 years of fawning profiles), who shares their bigotries and cruelties and makes them "fun" or "honest," and they can be more open now, especially after his alleged assassination attempt.

There's a chance Harris can win, but it's likely going to be very very close if she does.

But none of those were successfully spun as failures.

Not to us, but in the echo chamber, and in some of these polls results of late (if they are accurate), I think it worked.

The right wing echo chamber doesn't move new votes though. Otherwise it wouldn't be so close.

I would argue the only thing that has had a new impact is the press whining and demanding she answer more questions and claiming she is some unknowable enigma. That can be rectified. But Walz and the convention were unqualified successes. The CNN interview didn't go in one direction or the other AFAIC, though it easily could've.

I often tell myself their lies and games don't have an effect, even with all the control they have over the media, but when that NYT poll was going around saying that the public saw Trump as more moderate and saw Harris (who has painstakingly tried to be in the middle ground even to the point of likely losing some support) as further to an extreme, I was reminded of how powerful their framing still is. Even the last few days they have gotten people to move focus from Trump with all their sick smears and lies about Haitian immigrants eating cats.

Sure, but which people?

Just saw a video from Marc Elias that Amendment 3, the abortion referendum in Missouri is BACK on the ballot because the Missouri Supreme Court struck down the prior ruling.

Get this, the judge that ruled for the initiative to be tossed is the cousin of late monster Rush Limbaugh.

Here's an article about the reinstatement:

The usual ecosystem filtered out through hatemonger social media, which everyone else then has to react to. I saw Eric Swalwell going on about it today in Congress.

This is going a lot better than June.

The moderators have been excellent so far. Linsey Davis beautifully called Trump's insane abortion answer (about executing the babies) a lie and threw immediately to Harris.

Harris' abortion answer was flawless and she is handling him perfectly on the splitscreen. He lost his cool early and has remained on defense.

She even hit him about the rallies in the middle of an immigration answer!

This is going very well so far. Her smiles and laughter are driving him insane.

He's so going insane right now, and I love seeing it. And his MAGGOTS are losing their minds, too, suggesting she had the questions beforehand. LOL.
