Thanks to Jonatha at Daytime Royalty

NBC senior Vice President of daytime and drama programming, Bruce Evans, gives a peek at what's ahead in Salem.

Bo/Hope/Roman:

"Though the Hollingsworth case will finally be wrapped up, the Salem PD will be dealing with repercussions from the hospital lock down. There will be a major shake up in the ranks, and inevitably, it will leave Bo and Hope on uneven ground at home. It will be a true test for their relationship."

Stefano/Tony/EJ/John/Anna/Marlena:

"Stefano will once again allude the long arm of the law, thanks to an alliance with an unexpected person. The DiMera men will all be caught up in a power struggle over the family empire. Marlena will continue to wrestle with her feelings for John, made even more complicated when he starts exhibiting erratic behavior."

Steve/Kayla:

"A suspicious Steve will begin investigating Trent, leading him, Bo and Hope, to uncover a secret that will have a big impact on key Salemites. Kayla, meanwhile, will take on John as a patient after he starts experiencing new side effects from his treatment at the hands of Stefano and Rolf."

Sami/EJ/Nicole/Lucas/Chloe/Philip/Morgan:

"The war between Sami and Lucas escalates, and Sami is not going to be pleased by the end result. She'll turn to EJ for support, but he's not quite ready to give up on Nicole yet. Nicole's livelihood will be threatened when certain skeletons in her closet are revealed. Lucas and Chloe's relationship will continue to blossom, but a romantic getaway will be cut short by a very unwelcome visitor. Morgan will find it harder and harder to fight her feelings for Philip."

Abe/Lexie/Theo:

"Theo's care will be Abe and Lexie's primary focus, and Lexie, in particular, will make life changing decisions to do what is best for her son. Abe will also become consumed by his hatred of Stefano, and will take surprising steps in an effort to put an end to his reign of terror."

Max/Stephanie/Melanie/Nick/Chelsea/Trent:

"A heart broken Chelsea will flee to France to be with her friends, but she is not pleased to witness Nick and Melanie's new bond. Trent's shady past is going to catch up to him, and in a desperate attempt to save himself, he will put Max and Melanie's lives in danger."

Chelsea/Daniel/Kate:

"Kate and Daniel will be dealing with the fallout of their confession to Chelsea about their affair, as she seems to have no intention of forgiving them. In the midst of that, Kate will get devastating news."

As usual, these sound good - its the execution on screen that bothers me and ruins it - Higley and her breakdowns miss all the important beats and has awful pacing thrown in with minor contradicitions of history. If she could sort that out, the show would actually be quite good. Hmmm, I gave Higley a half-compliment - I must not be feeling well.

Looking at the storylines and the placement of some of these characters, I realize... I just don't care about more than half the storylines/characters being featured right now.

The sextangle starting with Sami and ending with Morgan is just full of odd (and uninteresting) coupling. . . Steve & Kayla are as interesting as watching grass grow. . . the sextangle of Max through Trent is full of boring uninteresting nothingness. . . and the Chelsea/Daniel/Kate thing is just... wrong. And let's get real here: the Abe/Lexie storyline is featured on average of once every three weeks. Back some 6-7 years ago, Abe & Lexie weren't the "token black storyline"; but rather they were well-integrated into the fabric of Salem. Sure, they have their supporting roles as Salem's police commander and Salem University's one and only doctor, but their own storyline is featured as often as Mickey Horton's appearances.

What has happened to this show?!? :o

    • Totally agree. AL isn’t suited to Summer written this way (which is, truthfully, in character). HK wasn’t credible in the boss-bitch moments, which AL plays more easily.
    • Welcome back, Tripp

I’m glad Tripp is back in Salem and I like that he’s planning on being more assertive. He doesn’t deserve to get hurt again. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if some people in the Soap Universe are gonna be mad about his lines today Hopefully, we get some scenes of Johnny/Tripp and Wendy/Chanel. There haven’t been that many lately and this storyline definitely needs them. I think weaving Talia into it would be a good idea as well. She needs a new man now that the Colin storyline is over.  Rafe is still dumb. There really are no security cameras at that hospital that could have shown that Colin didn’t take Abe?? Speaking of Abe, his storyline is total ff material. James Reynolds deserves so much better than this.
    • I've been rewatching early SATC (am mid-season 2), and am enjoying the mid-90s indie film vibe of the show at that time. It was a bit tougher and grittier but it also showed some of the growing wealth of the city at that time. SATC was always about pecking order and jostling for a better position, but on the romantic frontlines. I also enjoyed the Bad Dating SLs LOL. I understand why it went the fairytale-ish route. Part of this mirrored the evolution of the city itself, as Manhattan became more moneyed and, dare I say, unaffordable. It was a glamorous city that many aspired to live in and conquer against the odds. Part of it was also, as the show progressed, our own growing investment in the main cast and their SLs. Hence less standalone episodes and more a continuing soapy story of romantic relationships. IMO, this was a fairly organic evolution.
    • Lanier is fine but I miss Hunter King as well. A lot of the material AL is struggling with currently HK would’ve had an easier time playing, she could knock out those bratty whiny freakout moments with little effort. AL’s Summer should be written as icier and more indignant.
