1945-1964 = Baby Boom

I was born in 1965, so who knows what that means.

[britney Spears]Not a Boomer, not yet a boomlet[/End Britney Spears]

But JP is right. With his erudition, cultural references, firm sense of taste...our Sylph often comes across as one far older than his chronological years.

Which only goes to show (that was kind of DonnaB's point), "Age ain't nuthin' but a number". And with that being the case, one wonders again if the disastrous Madison Avenue narrow demographic focus still has meaning. It may once (these tales that the young are more malleable in brand tastes), but I'd love to know if research continues to affirm that.

I wouldn't say they have no competition, just no other soap competition, they could still be up against a Regis and Kelly, or gameshow, or some of those horrible talk shows people have abandoned soaps for. That's what they're doing poorly against. In our Market they're up against GH and Dr Phil and that windbag usually trounces both soaps (not to mention the Maury show on CW and some other chatfest on Fox)

I'm confused a little, GL is up in total viewers but down in all the demo's but the really odd thing to me is looking at the daily numbers how is it that GL could have a 1.7 rating with 2,695,000 viewers but GH gets only 2,604,000 and that's a 2.0 rating? Even the monday airing got a 2.3 for GH and a 1.7 for GL with only a difference of 171,000 viewers between the two? What is each ratings point worth in this case or how do they determine that rating point?

ITA and if GL was to be at 3pm EST across the nation same as GH their ratings would be much higher. Here is what the ratings could've been with the same number of viewers if aired at 3pm EST by sampling the other shows:

Guiding Light

Monday: 1.7/2,695,000------------->2.1

Tuesday: 1.7/2,214,000------------>1.8

Wednesday: 1.6/2,283,000-------->1.8

Thursday: 1.6/2,135,000----------->1.7

Friday: 1.6/2,188,000--------------->1.7

Total: 1.6----------------------------->1.8

General Hospital

Monday: 2.3/2,866,000

Tuesday: 2.1/2,556,000

Wednesday: 2.1/2,586,000

Thursday: 2.0/2,604,000

Friday: 2.1/2,730,000

It is obvious the ratings system is distorted.

More than once people from the outside have shown that that's bunk (the demos as hard & fast desirables) and at least twice people from the inside have shown it!

Certainly some advertisers want to target, but that's much more than just one age group. And, only some advertisers want to narrowly target.

And, the bottom line problem is who has money to spend & whether or not you can get brand loyalty out of young'uns, any more than you can anyone else. Yes, Boomers, and those older than us grew up with brand loyalty in our parents' households - but there were fewer brands & even fewer products. Boomers are simply not stuck in ruts about products. We were the first group to ever have been courted by marketers & we never really stopped being available to being courted.

I am absolutely a Baby Boomer. I was born in 1951 & I look & think younger than many people 20 years younger than me. :lol: I like life. I'm not nearly done. So, my baby brother was born in 1964, does that make him an Echo Boomer? He & I are very close & we have long affected each other's tastes.

Mark, I would have put you in the 20-something group because of some of your ideas for soaps. You must be in research or some type of science. You are very dispassionate -- scientific -- when you discuss the future of daytime.

60 Minutes did a piece on the 18-49 demographic focus by networks a few years ago. It seems the focus is more network-based than Madison Avenue based.

Donna, yes I have heard that people are living longer and working longer too. Being 52, I'm glad. :lol:

Whew! That 1.7 for AMC's Friday is ugly! I don't think I've ever seen a single day that low for AMC before. Can't say I'm surprised with the quality lately though.

Not too bad in demos for AMC!

Does anyone know what Pratt did for GH ratings? Did they rise or fall when he was at their writing healm?

Mark? MarkH? LOL, I never took him for young unless you mean young thinking & acting. Of course, I never thought of him as dispassionate about soaps either.

That is verrry interesting about soaps because the idea of the younger demo was begun at an advertising agency. Then, of course, everyone piles on. Maybe it's the networks that won't budge now. If anyone is slow to change around here, they are!!

Glad to stir (or shake) some more Baby Boomers out!! ;)

I posted an explanation about this before but here goes again. It just means that more people were watching TV when GL was on than when GH was on. As an example, Say that when GL was on, there were 5 million people in the country watching TV during that time. And of that 5 million, about 1.7% were watching GL. That would amount to about 85,000 viewers. Conversely, say that when GH is on, only 4 million people in the country are watching TV. And of that 4 million, 2.1% were watching GH. That would tabulate to about 84,000 viewers for GH. There was a larger percentage of the viewing audience watching GH but the pool of viewers at that time was much smaller than during the time that GL was on. So as you see, although GL had a lower rating, there were more people overall watching TV during the time it was on the air resulting in a larger amount of viewers than GH.

Of course, this is a simplify example because there are a lot more people than in my example watching TV at any given point in time but you can extrapolate to see how the numbers are arrived at. Hope this helps.

    • I'm anticipating most of the cast at the Nice location for a few weeks a la the Tuscan villa for Victoria and Ashland's wedding. I don't know why they bother. I'd rather see the money going into more regular home/office sets. This party has been a bust. No secrets revealed, break ups  etc. Ugly decorations and I'm going to slam the costuming again. Just the guests heaping praise on  Nikki  like she's achieved some magnificent milestone rather than just getting a year older.

In the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Marlena Evans, John took his last breath at the end of the June 2 episode, after suffering devastating internal injuries during a lab explosion. The iconic character went out as he lived — a hero. Sensing the fans’ devastation on Monday, Marlena’s portrayer Deidre Hall posted this simple-but-powerful message to fans on Instagram: “I know. I know. Hardest day ever.”

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.
