Y&R Joan Van Ark or Judith Chapman as Gloria

That "crazy" look is her only look, imo. She's got the crazy eyes and has had them for as long as I can remember, going all the way back to DAYS. It's one of the many reasons I can't watch her.

I preferred Joan in the role. She made the character more sympathetic. I have no sympathy whatsoever for Chapman's Gloria.

I agree :)

Who do you prefer as Gloria on Y&R.

I Prefer Judith Chapman, the simple reason is because Joan Van Ark is one of the worst actresses on any

soap, her work on Dallas was horrible bad.

Who do you all prefer as Gloria?.......

Joan Van Ark. I had some semblance of liking Glora with Van Ark. I loathe Chapman.

Joan Van Ark. As Gloria, she was all charm and humor. Gloria was a funny, trashy gold digger with good intentions. She was a woman who didn't make good choices but had the spirit of a fighter. She was the underdog like her sons Michael and Kevin. I could root for her even when as being less than forthcoming.

With Judith Chapman in the role, well...I can see why Tom Fisher was such a bastard. I felt sorry for him.

I totally agree. Van Ark all the way!

JC hands down.

pretty much because she can act, but also because shes just amazing.

however, the writing when JVA was there was MUCH better. I wish JC could get some of that.

I liked JVA in the beginning and didn't like how over the top JC made her but now JC has really grown on me. It would've been nice to see a Knots Landing reunion between JVA and Ted Shackleford. Oh what could've been.

Wow...in your succinct posts, you often say the most! Well put...I think JC is the better Gloria as an actress, but for so much of her reign, she hasn't had the best writing. Joan Van Ark got the last days of Jack Smith, and what he wrote for her was terrific.

I liked Joan Van Ark as Gloria becasue she brought a little bit of class to the character in the beginning. She was not over the top like how Judith Chapman plays her now. But the character Gloria is not one of favorites.

JC and JVA interpreted the character in two very different ways. They also have a wildly different acting approach. It was more the writers and the casting that changed the character of Gloria - not Chapman. She just went in and did what TPTB wanted her to do. Personally - I prefer JC's take on the role better because I like camp and arch types on soaps. JVA seemed to care too much about people liking her whereas JC could not give a damn how much people like her character or not - she relishes her character's behavior. And yeah, the travesty that JVA has done to her face is just a shame and a half.

The character that JVA created was a much stronger long term character than the one Judith Chapman plays now.
