January 7 2005 - Kate says goodbye.

I still think it was a stupid decision to get rid of Kate. She could have gone anywhere, in any story, as she was not bogged down, and she had easy chemistry with many different sections of the cast. I'm sure someone felt she had no major connections but that is an asset in many cases.

For most of her run (until she started going nuts) I thought Kim Medcalf's Sam was a spoiled bitch and I had little sympathy for her, but her last scene with Kate does make me feel sad.

Kat's line about "who would want to go into a pub where tears wash the gin" or whatever, was just beautiful. That was also such an Elsie Tanner type of line. I loved that Kat/Jean scene. That's the long type of scene most soaps are terrified of now.

Michael just does not work for me, although he was a little better with Ronnie.

Sam Womack was very good, I'm just so weary of this woe stuff.

Someone at DS also mentioned that Pete McTighe from Neighbours has also joined the writing team. He was apparently one of Neighbours' best writers and wrote the 6,000th episode there. His first episode is supposedly next Monday.

I wonder what promoted Kirkwood/Yorke to make changes to the story/writing team now.

Kathleen Beedles/Rob Ellis were at River City not too long ago, so I guess someone at the BBC transferred them to EastEnders.

I think this is one of Pat's first ever scenes.

It's funny seeing Kathy visibly upset at seeing Pat. Years later Pat and Kathy would be such close friends. I always enjoyed their friendship.

It's interesting how Pat evolved over the years from the drunken bitch that caused trouble to a more respected member of the community who usually dispenses wise advice.

EE was just so much better at slow-building characterization and character growth. Today you have Shirley, who was supposedly the new Pat, who never really changes at all and they just use her to prop Phil, and pass this off as being about the character. You still have some decent characterization, but nothing like Pat.

I do think Pat became a more iconic character when she found Frank again but I have a soft spot for that vile and fast-talking woman of the first few years. I think the show has taken her back to that slightly in the last year, which is probably why some fans were so upset at her behavior, or her being anything beyond just "Nana Pat."

This is my favorite two-hander.

I do think Janine makes many of the same mistakes Pat made in her life. Like always going after money, marrying for money, and being vile to those who care for her. That's why I think their relationship is so complicated when it's explored, because really, I do think Pat sees a lot of her old self in Janine. Janine's life has mirrored some of Pat's backstory, barring the murdering aspects.

I didn't know the Sharon/Michelle two-hander was up! Thanks.

Letitia's had so many hairstyles over the years. I still think the short-do she had in the early 90's was her best look.

I think both Letitia and Sue got prettier as they aged...

This channel has a lot of Den/Angie/Sharon stuff from 1985-1987:

    • I wouldn't call Tomas' cuts a modern cut. They appear to be a slim/extreme slim cut⏤cut slimmer down the sides, with a higher armhole, which pulls up/out, depending on the fit of the person's body. Again, I feel like Ms Featherstone is buying to fit the wrong parts of the body; instead of buying to fit their widest parts (shoulders), she's buying things to fit their middle/waist (which is the easiest to ultimately fix without a complete re-cut), and it shows in the finished product. And the only reason it irks me is because I worked in suit sales for nearly ten years, and I notice these things immediately. The fashion(s) on this soap are miles ahead of three of the four others (I like the fashions from Y&R), but the tailoring is a choice, especially where the men are concerned.
    • There probably would have been a good chance they knew of him, especially with his ties to Spaulding and his being involved in so much scandal (meaning there would be plenty of photos and articles around they both would have seen), but I agree the mask was silly, clearly just a TV moment.

    • I think all the suits are fit too tight, except for Jon Lindstrom's. DC lawyers/doctors are not all LA fashion elites. Yes, maybe Tomas would have a more modern cut to his suit, but an established guy like Bill wouldn't go around looking like that lonely button on his jacket was ready to explode constantly.
    • I do think there's room for optimism, especially with Amazon making enough new episodes to last until December. There's still time for the various players to get their ducks in a row. Guess we'll know soon enough!
    • I do agree it's better to just have people pop back into town. I never understood why Roger needed a mask on an island, when neither Fletcher or Alex would've known who he was. And the vine...sigh. Couldn't he have just been sent crashing through a window or something?
    • When the announcement was first made, I did wonder if other plans were in the works. I guess we can always keep hoping, especially as the show has a small core cast.
    • @chrismlAbout Lisa, agree to disagree. Actually at the time she was the only thing my partner & I disagreed about. Naturally she was Team Vicky while I was steadfast as Team Lisa.  About John & twin paternity, I think that like the 3 pillows was a transitory idea someone had that no one else agreed with. More of the attempt to accommodate Philece. About MJ, co-sign, 100% agree, if there were more degrees I would claim them. About Wally & Felicia, always a fan. Mitch? Eh, take or leave. Although I do agree that WGE is a really striking man. Who have I left out? I don't know so that's all I got.

    • Dallas peaked early, IMO. Maybe not a fair statement as I’m still making my way through the first half of its run, but I think it’s hard to argue to point that S3 into S4 was its high point. Back to Knots. Wrapping up “And Never Brought to Mind.” Greg’s introduction kinda took me by surprise. I low-key dreaded his arrival bc I know he very quickly gets to the center of the show, but even though they wasted no time connecting him with Mac, Abby, Gary, and Karen, it still feels like a gradual intro. The juxtaposition of the ending of the Chip story with the heating up Abby’s plotting is quite symbolic of the changes the show was going through. I absolutely cannot imagine Kenny and Ginger having any part in any of this. Yall, the Gary/Val piano theme that they pull out from time to time is my FAVORITE. I find myself humming it constantly.
