1. OLTL- Just to put a smile on Shane's face. ;)

2. B&B- Heard great things about it. Now that I am watching not too great. But still #2.

3. AMC- Has been good as of late. I dont see that lasting though.

4. DAYS- Seen bits and pieces. Seems the same show to me.

5. ATWT- My show...poor ATWT..

6. Y&R- The soap totally sucks. It was close to being #7 on my list.

7. GH- Too much violence...bad pairings.

8. GL- Sucks dog do do....worst writing ever....bad production values...just horrible....bad...bad...bad....

Finally, some objectivity! Y&R has always been and, still is, my all time favorite soap. That doesn't mean I don't think OLTL is 10 times better than Y&R right now. Hell, even B&B is too.

Well, you can't really argue with "Because I love it" as a reason why something's the best. Then we'd all just be going around in circles and this would be a very frustrating bulletin board. The best thing to do in the world of soaps is remain objective. At least that's my opinion. I think otherwise, these threads end up degrading into "I like THIS better", "Well, I like THAT better" and we all end up sounding like a couple twelve year olds. (Apologies to those out there who really ARE twelve years old. :P )

thats true but if you love oltl can one really pull themselves back and be objective? and even if they can its still only a matter of opinion. thats the great thing tho about this world. everyone is able to form and share there own personal opinion about things, and very few things are fact in terms of best vs worse or anything like that.

people can honestly feel OLTL is an awful show right now and GL is amazing. doesn't make them wrong... just means they have a diff view and opinion.

Upthread I sort of snarkily suggested I couldn't be objective. OLTL is my current favourite even if I know it hasn't been at the top of its game for a long time. Had this question been asked of me a few years ago I would have said Y&R, but OLTL would still have been my soap "home". Other times I might have said ATWT, or B&B, and back in the 80's I would have said AMC - but still come home to OLTL.

I thought I was the only one in the world who considers one soap, and only one, to be a "home" soap. AMC, without a doubt, is my home soap. It's the soap that I've spent hours on top of hours on top of hours doing research on, reading yearly summaries over and over again, watching clips over and over again, etc. It's not that I don't love any of the other soaps a whole lot, but no other soap at all can give me that particular feeling that AMC can. When I think about my show and all of its history, most of which I wasn't even a viewer for, I tend to get just a little bit teary-eyed.

Very true, JP. I was trying to take a step back and look at it objectively though (hence why I put Days in my top 4. If it were my own personal list, it wouldn't be). But you're so right - there are people out there right now who can't get enough of GL right now and that it's the greatest soap on the air. And I'd hope they'd also be able to see that even though they feel that way - the majority of the fans do not.

I guess I was just trying to keep opinion out of it, and rate the "best soaps of 2008" by general fan outlook and how they're perceived on a whole by the vast majority of threads I read on this and other boards. Which is this list I posted earlier:

1) OLTL

2) B&B

3) AMC

4) Days

5) Y&R

6) GH

7) ATWT

8) GL

But if I do it based off of my opinion of what "best" is, I'd have to say:

1) OLTL

2) Y&R

3) B&B

4) GH

5) AMC

6) ATWT

7) Days

8) GL

First and last would be the same, but the rest are different. Oh, how fun making lists is!! :P

It's almost like family, in that we can't really choose after a while. Love them or hate them, it's where we belong, who we know best, who we feel most comfortable with. Not necessarily the best show. Lord knows I could think of better families than mine, and other people's friends often seemed to have fewer faults.

    • We all knew that TT is busy so if she's off screen for a bit except for phone calls and/or visits.. then it is what is. Ashley was nicely used as support... which the writers should have been doing since day 1 so that viewers could understand why exactly she's on the show LOL Chelsea/Madison.... seems too good to be true... we shall see. Shanice as a PT... if it means more airtime.. I'm good.
    • Yeah, he's a mobster with Vanessa while his wife cozies up to mobsters as the worst mayor in America.
    • He's too busy in Maryland with a younger blonde woman.

    • The rumor Zimmer writes about sounds like something Paul Rauch would have told Zimmer about Jacqueline Courtney as a way to discredit Courtney as Rauch loved to do that sort of thing. Zimmer probably just retroactively fit it into her story. Zimmer does not have good sense of time in her memoir. Who knows?!!? Zimmer strikes me as someone who always has to be competing with women.  Zimmer and 1986: If I had no context and someone told me that someone in the 1986 scenes would win four Emmys, I would immediately pick Denniston. Granted, I've only watched about a week's worth, but my word, Zimmer just fades into the background even when she's the main player in the storyline. There's no life in her performances. It feels that Zimmer is unhappy and that she's letting it impact her acting.
    • I'm dreading going into the ninth season; I've got to be mentally ready for it.

Does not help these seasons are damn near thirty episodes. Twenty-two should've been their cut-off.
    • True. I did enjoy the episodes surrounding Greg's faux death, too. @Liberty City Agreed, it started pretty slow, but once Jill falls off the cliff, I was more invested for some reason. Yes, I genuinely enjoyed the episodes surrounding Greg's fake death. I agree, it began quite slowly, but once Jill fell off the cliff, I became much more invested for some reason. I guess bc more of the cast was working together.
    • Shouldn't Laura talk to Kevin first before agreeing to her brother Martin moving in with them? Her house is like a hotel for people she never sees -- like Lucky, who she's unaware of his latest departure as a man who runs away from everything. Meanwhile, Lucky is busy giving away his cabin to Isaiah, who we've barely seen him with.
    • With Sean Kanan as Carl Ivati.
    • These episodes have been delightful so far. I enjoyed everyone who stood at the podium today, as it reminded me of all the decades of history.
