Malcolm's role of Pat Ryan on Ryan's Hope would become larger as the weeks went on, and that he would be taking this role of Jesus in a production of Godspell in upstate New York. How was this affecting him - what was it giving to him to have so much going on at one time? With an enormous smile on his face he told me.

"Right now it's like a time of storing up energy. I'll be so busy on the show and doing Godspell and commuting, I have to make the best use of my time. So this is making me have to make strict economy of time which is good for me. It's good training!"

Did they inform Malcolm that his role of Pat Ryan was going to grow - or did he learn it himself.

"No, we talked about it. They are a wonderful group of people and tremendous to work with. Do you notice how wonderfully they build their plots on Hope? All the things that are happening with Delia right now are great and the complications are terrific!" Now it is obvious that Pat Ryan, too, will be a part of these complications.

"I got a week off for the rehearsal of Godspell and it's about an hour-and-a-half drive to the theater. I'll be sleeping in New York - sort of touching base - and meditating and doing yoga which is as good as a few hours sleep. I just want to use my energy as efficiently as possible."

For Malcolm, who is totally in touch with spirituality, there must be a great deal of emotion in playing the role of Jesus.

"I'm really looking forward to it. I'm also hoping that it will be a channel for something to come through. I want to be responsive. He said some great things and it's brought out in the play. Perhaps it's done in a tighter manner - but it's all brought out about the Kingdom of Heaven Being Within. That's a lot of what meditation is about - teaching that heaven is within.

"You know, what Buddha said is like what Jesus said. The lessons underlying the words of religions are the same. He taught a way of life. Religion is man-made, Truth is God-made. Truth is the thing beneath the labels."

For a man who spends so much good energy and self-use in finding stillness, peace and truth. I wondered if perhaps New York City was not the best choice in the world for an environment. Malcolm met the question head-on.

"I feel as though my art is my 'service.' In mediation I try to go inside and tap something that I can let outside and relate to the outer world. That's what art is, too. It's what finding out what self is.

"New York affects me as much as I let it. You actually create your own environment. Whatever your inner-state is - that's the way you have to perceive things. Depending on my state of mind, I can perceive a heaven or a hell. One of the laws of metaphysics is that consciousness creates form. New York is the only place for me to do my art. It may change, but right now its where my 'service is. New York is the quintessence of what's going on in the world. It might be one of the darkest times in the world, but there is also a ray of light. That's what I try to tune into."

At this point of time in Malcolm Groome's life, he is not deeply into a relationship with any one person.

"The main relationship I'm involved with is working on myself. It's the only thing to do. Working on my consciousness, my growth and my evolution. You know, if you can be a conscious being in New York you can be one anywhere. You can't be lazy with yourself in New York. It just must be within you as an on-going process."

Was there anything that would make Malcolm happy - perhaps material or tangible?

"What I try to do is not attach myself or my goals to the world of form. That isn't to say that I don't want the ease and comfort of things because I do! But I just believe in the growth of the soul first. I want so much to improve myself. I don't know where it's going. I want to work on my art and be as much of a channel as I can be to the world."

Here again, I feel as though I must say that trying to paint a picture of Malcolm Groome by words is almost wrong. Just the way people who try to write about emotional things like love and death and birth and joy - we can only hope to get close to the truth. And we keep trying.

"You asked what makes me happy," he said softly. "The process of acting makes me happy. It's the begin one with the process. In work I feel very alive. It goes beyond happy - it's not just a smiley thing. It can be working at your ultimate aliveness. I feel happy any time I can feel a peaceful acceptance."

I don't know why I didn't realize that it was really raining the whole time I was with Malcolm or even after I was out on the street. Maybe I was too busy being grateful that not only did I know Malcolm Groome - but that we were friends.

When Ryan's Hope began, it was the first time [...] an ethnic background was used for the main family.

So who were the Bauers of GUIDING LIGHT? WASP's?

    • Garneau was in the Liberal party and his riding was in Montreal. He was the first Canadian in outer space.
    • I agree. I really have enjoyed this story from the beginning. I feel like it needed the time for us to care about Doug. They've done a nice job of explaining his motives and making me care for him. I still feel like he's doomed and Vanessa will end up being a widow and now I'm invested in that *not* happening now that I've fallen for him. Friday was good but so was the entire week. I think they're doing such a nice job of keeping things moving. We got good movement with Bill's story this week, Chelsea is attempting to date, Andre and Dani are having tough conversations about their relationship, of course Anita reunited with Sharon. There is *so* much going on and I didn't even cover all of it.  I wish all of the soaps would take a page out of BTG book and start rotating their stories. I love that everybody is getting a chance to shine and they don't just sit on one lead story to the point you get sick of it.
    • Did Jordan Clarke have a departure sometime between 1985 and 1989? I know Robert Newman had three runs: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end.
    • Well, they usually weren't on the show at the time for long until the late 90's. But yeah, they really deserved a story centered on them, and not through the lens of Reva.
    • Chelsea was doing the absolute most today! Why was she introducing her sister to a woman she doesnt know? That whole scene was embarrassing. Madison needs to stay away from her bc she is too immature
    • Gosh, what a waste with Lunacy. Why have her live with $B, reveal Finn, pardon her, etc What makes this story incredibly hollow is that what Luna is asking isn't unreasonable - to spend time with her cousin father. She's not asking to move in with them. How hard with it be for Finn to throw her a bone by, say, I'll meet you for lunch/coffee once at week at the hospital cafeteria. Lunacy isn't going to hurt Finn. In fact, all her crimes were related to finding her father and it turns out to be someone she's loved her entire life. Instead of course-correcting the nonsense of last summer, Brad somehow found a way to make this worse! That's a skill... Of all the younger actors B&B has cast during the past 5 years, LY has shown the most growth and range. Why get rid of her?
    • On the subject of sets (seems more interesting to discuss than the actual show)  Some sets we don't see anymore Lauren/Michael apartment (haven't seen that in years) Victoria's house (are Marian/Tessa living there?) Apartment above Crimson Lights (I think Chelsea was the last resident) Penthouse (Lily's home) Chancellor Estate (Devon/Abby) Chancellor office (once Dark Horse) Nick's house GCAC room (used as residence/hotel room for several characters) Some of these may pop up again. The tack house, for example, was not seen for many months before being used again. Have I missed anything?
    • Thanks for searching through everything. Worked on them so long, just too lazy to check for those links myself, so I am glad you chose to do it! I guess I never did type out anything for 1973-1977 in regards to the preemptions, but they are on the charts at least (and this far back, they don't seem to do any of those "breakouts" anymore, so things are simpler in the 1970's, so eventually I could type those out).
    • I dump on the Y&R sets problem all the time, but BOLD is no better -- and they're not even introducing new sets. All of their sets are years old, and very few look like they're inhabited by people with money. Is that going to change with this move? I'd rather they save the money spent on another remote, which is no better than an HGTV travelogue, and get some new/better sets.
    • The donut posts here make up for a Friday show that was barely meh. Aside from seeing Anna, I really didn't care much about anything else. While I understand the thought behind breaking up all the sadness with "other scenes," I'd rather they moved right to John's funeral. Instead of hearing a stupid story about John changing some minor character's tire 20 years ago, just move on to the crying. I also thought the Chad and Cat scenes were a waste. I realize not everyone is devastated by John's death to the point of not functioning, but going sky diving is a choice. By the way, Jack and Jennifer are giving me nothing on this return. Please leave asap. DAYS did such a great job with John's death, so ending the week this way was a letdown.
