I think that's because Joan Collins knew Diahann Carroll was no threat to her, and vice-versa. Joan and Diahann appeal mostly to two different demographics, with gay men being the overlapping circle in the Venn diagram.

I think Joan was savvy enough to know all the publicity around a new rival for Alexis was good for the show and that the writers wouldn't downgrade her character. It was good to have someone new to play off as the Alexis/Krystal/Blake shtick had grown tired.

Kate and Cheryl did "Satan's School For Girls" together for Spelling in 1973. I often wonder is something happened on set there between the two that carried over to Charlie's Angels ? There's a 1977 Mike Douglas show on youtube where He visits the set to meet the newest angel. Kate sits in on Jaclyn's interview then leaves before Cheryl come in. It's awkward.

When I came across this promo of the three, I instantly thought of the comments above. 🤭😉
