GH: Laura Wright

Without comparing her to Sarah and Tamara, I still feel other than the travesty that was Jennifer Bransford, Wright is still the weakest actress to take on that role of Carly. There's just no nuance or subtext to her performances, she's very one-note. I, for one of the few times, felt something for her last week though. However, she degraded back to where she was this week. She's just too over the top and chews too much scenery, long-term subtlety is just not her forte. She's just missing that special X factor that other and much better actresses have, IMO. She's not the worst actress in the world, but she's no where close to being the best.

I love wright, for various reasons. I do thinks he is a damn good actress and does the best she can with the role of carly. Carly is not written like she was when Sarah or even Tamara were in the role.

Yes, LW plays her OTT, but isnt the way its written?

This week so far as well as last shows how great LW can be when givwn something to play aside from OTT.

I really don't have a problem with LW. Its the Carly character I can't stand so I have a hard time feeling sypathy for Carly no matter who plays her but the Jason obession disgusts me since Jason is also in the mob. I really haven't felt for any of these characters.I'm already tired of the mob storyline. I would respect Carly more if she threw both Jason and Sonny out of her kids lives probally an unpopular opinon.

I don't usually like LW as Carly but I'll give her props here. Her scenes in the hospital with Michael feel like a mom worrying over her comatose son to me. That silent look of anger and disbelief she gave Lulu last week was brilliant. When LW dials it down a few notches, she is far more effective.

However, GH almost blew it for her when they had Sarah Brown hovering over Michael on Friday. I wondered why they would show us something which would immediately trigger memories of SBr as Carly and Michael's mom.

Also? The day this Tragic Event hit Port Charles, Carly was being a big old bitch to Jax... and dumping her pwecious little boys with the nanny so that she could strut around Metro Court feeling important. Let's not forget she was wasting time she could have spent with her beloved family

1. begging Jason to believe that she and he are "soulmates,"

2. scheming with ShrewLu to get Maxie out of her job and BitchFace in it,

3. yelling at Kate who just got over a bullet wound perpetrated by now-brain-dead son.

Yeah. Not much sympathy here for Cujo.

Yep- I was scratching my head there for a minute because she was one of the leading actresses on that show and she was always trying for that Lead Actress in a Drama Series when she played Cassie Layne- the slut.

Exactly. Carly was written rough around the edges, carrying old childhood wounds of inferiority with an abandonment complex. She lashed out, plotted and schemed out of a strong desire to prove that she was worthy of respect and the finer things in life -- trying to prove it more to herself than to anybody else.

LW's Carly is written as a spoiled little brat who thinks life is a perpetual high school to fit LW's limited portrayal. Jason and Sonny are the star jocks in school, she's the head cheerleader and homecoming queen, Jax is her rich boyfriend that drives the nice Mercedes to school and nobody else is allowed to even think they're worthy of being a part of their dysfunctional clique. If anybody does dare to enter into the clique, Carly will sneer and snarl and ghetto-neck-roll the hell out of head, always letting it be known that they're not worthy to be a part of their mega fabulous group. While it's not necessarly untrue -- Carly does feel that way somewhat -- it's the portrayal that bothers me. Instead of seeming as if Carly's finally found a group of people she loves and that loves her, and she finally found a place to belong after feeling like an outsider all her life and doesn't want anyone to jeopardize that... which is what I believe is more truthful to the character, LW's Carly is just a spoiled little queen of everything who's deciding who can come to her Super Sweet 16 party, and who can't... just so she can feel special.

That's the trick with acting and portraying soap characters. Everything in soaps is over the top. There mere fact that these women wake up in full hair and makeup and wear six in heels in prison is over the top. The trick is to make it believable as an actor -- not cartoonish.

Constance Towers as Helena Cassadine, for example. Helena, in the hands of any other actress, would be nothing but a Snidely Whiplash cartoonish character because Helena is incredibly over the top. But Constance Towers plays the role with a touch of class, a touch of elegance, and never manages to speak above a whisper even when Helena's royally pissed.

Over the top doesn't mean you have to shriek, scream and chew up every bit of scenery around you.

i dont think that char's waking up in full hair and makeup is over the top. but i see what you are saying.

my thing is i find it obvious that GH WANTS carly this way. LW is an actress, hired for a role. she is to do her job the way they want it done. sure she could take a stand and stick up for the char and what she feels should be done - but isnt the main reason Sarah & Tams both left? a lot of actors get fired for that.

with these scens when carly has been written like a nomral human, LW has acted it sooo perfectly.

She needs some voice modulation. "MY SON IS IN A COMA, SONNY/JASON/STRANGER I DON'T KNOW! COMA, COMA, COMA, EYEROLL, ELIZABTEH, GRRR." is not acting. Yes, yes, we know, Carly is a Strong Black Woman but how about she have some layers other than entitled and perpetually premenstrual?

Only on GH could a kid in a coma solicit practically no sympathy from the audience. Audience being me. And me being I don't give a f*ck if Michael ever wakes up.

    • I don't mind Jan either. If anything, they could be using her more to get her daughter's POV. Not to mention her role as one of the Have-Nots.    I also don't mind the local talent. Just look at soaps that were in NY or the shows that film there, they always go for the local talent and we get to find new faves.
    • I'm not going to watch (because...well...that M-dude...lol) but knowing the history between Henry and Roger, I could see Henry wanting to enable Hart to stay independent of Roger. I could even see it as Henry having the last laugh at Roger. Roger hated "the Henry's" of the world, which basically meant anyone who had money and social prominence. Twice Roger swindled Henry out of a chunk of his fortune, so giving some to Hart, who hates his father, is a form of karma.
    • Ashley and Derek have to go- they really throw off the pace of the show.  Today was the first time I fast-forwarded through their scenes. The writing and acting is just bad for both characters.
    • Jon is stuck in a story that isn't popular but with Cady I feel like the issue is that she was clearly thrown in with no real purpose. I still don't understand why she pops up. I recall early on it being said she owned a spa but we've never seen it. That could've been an interesting location for people to meet. She also could've worked better as Smitty's mom, but instead we get this random agent of Dani's who pops up twice a month? A total waste. I mostly agree. I do feel like Jan could be elevated with a name soap actress, someone like Judi Evans or Kassie DePaiva comes to mind, but they're limited to who is in Atlanta. Keeping that in mind I think the current actress is fine.
    • It's great to see. My thoughts might be a little different, but for the most part, I am excited and interested in most of the storylines. Yeah, you're right. This is probably how she (Dani) normally acts. And, I do not like it!  I agree; this is another distraction while she heals her wounds. If I weren't an Eva fan, she helped me root for her even more. As I said a month ago, I hope they take their time with her modeling agency. I would love to see her face a few obstacles before becoming a huge success.
    • I like that there are a lot of local performers on this soap and I'm glad they've resisted so far on hiring too many soap performers.   Cady has been awkward on the show thus far and Jon seems to have polarizing as well. I say focus on the local talent and giving those people a job and exposure.. and leave the P & G soap opera performers in the past.
    • Who do you think would be good for the show among the ATWT/GL cast?
