Santa Barbara Discussion Thread

In the bible, Warren killed Channing. I don't remember if the reason was explained as I feel it was written as bit of an end note at the end of the plot section. He would later marry Eden and die shortly afterwards. It didn't say how he died, but I remember getting the sense he was going to be murdered.

Was it ever explained how the Capwells and the Lockridges first came to be established in Santa Barbara? On Dallas and Falcon Crest the geographical locations were suitable for the family industries, but I think the Capwells were in Santa Barbara before any off-shore drilling ventures and before the Capwell hotel was built.

"Oh, for God's sake, just drink the damn tea already, Ken!"

And I would've been glad when he finally drank the tea, too, except the interminable dialogue and music just kept going on and on and on.

I feel like this was talked about a little bit in one of the earlier episodes, like one that would have been in 1984, but it's not the sort of thing where I can tell which episode specifically from summaries to go back and look. So this is all going from memory, but I want to say that it was mentioned that one of the Capwells, maybe Nathaniel, was the first to settle in Santa Barbara when he moved there from back east. (And then later in 1986 it was established that the Grant/Madeline/Courtney branch of the family lived in Boston.) I'm not sure if it was ever explicitly spelled out for the Lockridges, but the impression I got was that at that time, they were already an established society family there and at that point better off than the Capwells that came there. But I could be wrong!

I just wrapped up January 1985. The show is so much more watchable now than in 1984! It wasn't an earthquake that revitalized the show, but a serial killer! That's probably something Jill Farren Phelps never forgot; this was her first serial killer story as one of the producers.

The story works here because there literally was nothing going on. Finally the show has some juice and energy; some stakes! The writing of it is ok, and the acting is good, especially from the killer Stephen Meadows. Finally Cruz has some real purpose on the canvas. He's been good as the cop, and to see him work with Mason, who he called "partner" once, has been fun!

All the other stories that weren't working have been dropped (Jade and Danny, the Amanda Lockridge) or are being downplayed. The one exception has been Ted and Laken. Why they insist on giving these two dramatic material when they can't act is beyond me! Your father killed my mother; you ratted out my brother; etc. It's silly, and all just a recipe for bad acting. They should have kept it light with them.

So, I ordered the special Soap Opera Digest 50 Greatest Couples special print issue, and it arrived recently.

How the rankings were chosen, I have absolutely no idea. But what surprised me was, in that issue, while both Cruz and Eden and Mason and Julia made the list...Cruz and Eden were #36, while Mason and Julia were #23!

Gotta admit, that surprised me here. (Even saying this as a mega Mason and Julia fan!)

With that said, it's a nice special issue, with nice write ups and photos and such. Not sure if it is in stores, but if anyone is interested, I got it through this store which was e-mailed through the SOD e-mail account:

    • Of course! It's a lot to compile, with every Tom, Dick, and Harry credited, but it's fun!

    • So far, Canada has been one day ahead for six episodes. @Toups @Errol  any official word on this? MVJ commented to a viewer on twitter:   from @iammskye1 I demand to be put in the same schedule with the Canadian #BeyondTheGates viewers. If that means dropping us two episodes in one day, one aired live and one on streaming, do what you gotta do, lol. They ain’t bout to be out here outdoing us.   Michele Val Jean @MicheleValJean June 2, 2025 I hate this too. It really screws with the way we construct reveals if one batch of viewers is ahead of the rest. Very frustrating. #BeyondThe Gates #BTG https://x.com/MicheleValJean/status/1929742526107603321   from @iammskye1  Thank you for acknowledging our pain.

Michele Val Jean @MicheleValJean June 2, 2025 And then there are spoilers and it really does spoil the reveal for those who haven’t seen it yet. sigh. #thanklessjob #BeyondTheGates #BTG https://x.com/MicheleValJean/status/1929744253829501104 -

    • I guess that's why I never could hate Drake Hogestyn or John Black so much that I wanted him off the show.  DH always came across (on screen and off) as the ultimate "team player," who never phoned it in or mistreated his colleagues or fans in any way.
    • Good Morning, this is still funny to me but I totally enjoyed what makes up "DemetriKane" so unnecessary, who cares?!!! Glad you like the Emma Peel derivative story.
    • Christian Streaty penned today's Day's script. https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-streaty/
    • Yes, they did.  I still have them.  I think there were three.  AMC and GH as well.
    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.
