GRADE YOUR SOAPS!

Y&R: B. So much better than last year, although it needs to recapture momentum as it transitions out of Troll's non-SLs and starts up with some new ones. It's still the first soap I want to watch, however.

B&B: C. Sagging and lagging. The eternal R/B/N/T quadrangle is hurting the show and the Honey Bear viagra stuff really isn't strong enough to distract us. It needs to utilize its great cast ASAP.

GH: D. Started Feb Sweeps off great. Then it went back to mob-propping, misogyny and boredom.

(No offense intended here) You hate the format after three days????? I know that E.W., CBS and P&G have stated numerous of times that they will be tweaking the new format over period of time which goes along the line of "practice makes perfect".

I've been an avid viewer of GL since summer 1989, and the last few years I've been a reality show/cable show junkie which makes me understand the new format of GL and I love the new format for its realism. I take it any day over the over-exposure of Beacon Hotel/Main Street set crap or the awful hairy arms opening credit.

Granted soaps are not like what it was in the past and just like from radio to television there will be transition as we will be seeing traditional taping to digital filming/internet in the next decade. Kudos to GL to think innovative, technical and to survive the competition in thousands of television channels as it reaches out to new generations of people which bears the question in my mind, what are the other soaps doing to survive in this genre--seriously what ARE they really doing? Writing alone is not going to salvage the soaps look at OLTL for an example, so yes GL is not perfect but others are not perfect as well, in fact, some of them are so unwatchable nowadays AMC, GH and Passions.

What's interesting is that people always complain and they have complained about GL going from radio to television in the 50s, they've complained GL about the pairing of Holly/Roger (rape) in the 70s and time slot shuffling when Y&R debuted; they've complained about the loss of Reva in the late 80s, they've complained about the Jill Farren Phelps changing the show's landscape, killing of Maureen and Reva's cloning storyline in the 90s, and the pairing of "kissing cousins" of Jonathan & Tammy in the 2000s--it's obviously an endless thing about GL.

GL will be GL despite of the evolutionary change of the show since 1937 and by goodness, they've lasted over 70 years with DECADES of rumors that they would be cancelled. In my book, GL is by far one of the better soaps in the history and even still today, furthermore, all shows (daytime, primetime, cable) goes through rough patches through writing and quality which is part of a vicuous cyclical process. GL will truly shine through in the long-run with this new format which is the future of television.

AMC: C (for Jesse/Angie and for the show's effort to at least try and recapture some of the magic of the old AMC)

ATWT: C (solid acting can't save this show from being anything more than mediocre at the moment)

DAYS: B+ (the plane crash dialogue writing was an unintentional campy hoot, the Grandpa Shawn funeral was remarkably well done, and there seems to be an energy that's been missing for a long time)

GH: D (it's just so dark and depressing, the killer reveal was a raging dud, and the whole show seems unrecognizable to me)

OLTL: C+ (the show's not great, but not bad either, mostly just dull)

Y&R: B (some interesting developments, some not so interesting; it seems to lack the energy and sense of vision that I feel LML infused into it, and some of the actors look very bored with the material)

AMC-D-The only good thing about the show is Angie/Jessie

ATWT-C-I love Luke and Noah

B&B-F-I stopped watching because of the baby Jack storyline

Y&R-B-Latham is gone and the stories are much better

GL-F-The stories and the new format sucks

I only watched two soaps during sweeps

Days-A-Everything was great the best sweeps in years!

GL-F-Ugggh that's all I can say about this show. Harley has turned into a tramp who needs to be slapped very hard, I have always hated Cyrus but after his two scenes with Rick I hate him more and wish they would just kill him off. Marina can go with Cyrus I have never liked her and never will. Cassie can just leave and take the omen kid with her, I have four words for Reva and Josh just do it already! We all know you will be back together by May so come on give it up. Lizzie/Jon/Bill was good for about the first week then when Lizzie decided to marry the man who let her believe her daughter was dead for over a year that's when i said frig this, you should be trying to make his life hell not trying to sex him up. The new sets are ok but the theme sucks and so does the sound and background music. I am very close to dropping this show for good unless P&G makes some behind the the scenes changes(Fire Kreizman Fire Kreizman Fire Kreizman).

Sorry for the long Guiding Light rant but i just had to say that.

Days:

February Sweeps- A- amazing sweeps months..finally Days takes sweeps seriously and gives us a huge event..And guess what they got a nice bump in the ratings..Also Grandpa Shawn's funeral was excellent..

Month of March so far- B+ The momentum has faded a bit, but i'm happy to have so many different stories going at once..Unlike Hogan who only gave us 2 or 3 stories at a time..Now John/Marlena, Bo/Hope, Steve/Kayla, Victor, Tony/Anna all have stories..Also i'm really enjoying Ava and Dr. Daniel..and i can't wait for Nicole to shake things up again..

B&B: B The show is lagging a bit. It just needs a little shot in the arm but overall still very good and watchable.

DAYS: B This show is the best it's been in a long time.

Y&R: B+ The hack bitch is gone, the show is in a transition, some of it is dull but some of it is fabulous.

Only watch One Life to Live right now but will give an honest grade. On paper before the strike OLTL was gonna be on fire FEB SWEEPS but with the prolonged strike the writers obviously extended scenes & dropped scenes to give RC time to return and pen his vision. This was very evident in the s/l's and why we did not get the big Allison SECRET reveal. All in all though the show was entertaining and deserves a B-.

Not sure if this week is included in SWEEPS but WoooooooooWeeeeeeeeeee AWESOME and today is only WEDNESDAY!!!!!!!

Look out next SWEEPS though, because RC and his crew are back!!!!!!!!!!!

I would give Days:A-. I have really enjoyed the past couple of months. They are utilizing all of their characters instead of focusing on just a few.

GL B+ Believe it or not I kind of like the new format. Except for all the close ups. I think that might get better with more experience with the hand held camera. The sound is not too bad. The show has the flavor of a reality show so it's okay with me. Now I know a lot of people don't like the current story lines, but I find myself rushing home to see GL. (I TIVO Days and GL and use to watch Days everyday and save GL for the weekend) While I don't like a lot of the current pairings, I am really interested in what's going on.

But I guess that's why we watch. Sometimes we like a story and sometimes we don't, but we seem to keep on watching expecting something to happen that we'll like.

    • I'm fighting for my life on another board for my husband Brandon and I'll do it here too lmao
    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
