The Suds Report: January 18, 2008

By Nelson Branco

‘Degrassi’ star comes out! Scott Bryce fired from ‘ATWT’! Plus: Mary J Blige returns to ‘OLTL’!

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT: Star comes out in fab magazine

Since CTV’s Degrassi: The Next Generation could be considered a teen soap, I wanted to alert my readers of my exclusive interview with series star Adam Ruggiero, who bravely comes out to me in the pages of fab magazine, on stands Jan. 23. If you live outside Canada, you can log on to www.fabmagazine.com on Wednesday to read Ruggiero’s unique story; it’s a must-read, if I do say so myself!

AWARD SHOW CENTRAL: 2008 DGA nominees announced

The Director’s Guild of America has announced its 2008 soap opera nominees, and they are: One Life to Live (Larry Carpenter); All My Children (Casey Childs), As the World Turns (Christopher Goutman), General Hospital (Scott McKinsey), and Guiding Light (Ellen Wheeler). Winners will be announced on Jan. 26.

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — Writers’ strike be damned!

You can thank Susan Lucci (Erica) for Josh Duhamel’s Emmy win: recently, Las Vegas creator Gary Scott Thompson revealed that the former Pine Valley hunk was convinced that "Susan Lucci hated him, and so he spent every weekend rehearsing and rehearsing and rehearsing as Leo du Pres." Now, that’s funny. Too bad Lucci doesn’t have the same effect on today’s AMC performers.

Meanwhile, The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) will honour La Lucci, along with journalist Sam Donaldson and singer Maureen McGovern, at its 2008 Media and Entertainment Excellence awards.

This explains why Pine Valley still feels like it’s been invaded by body snatchers: The New York Times reported that AMC headwriters Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown have been writing the soap despite the WGA strike. Here’s an idea, people: instead of promoting the fact that the “real Greenlee” is back, how about trying to resurrect the real AMC?

In not-so-shocking news, wannabe actor Brent Weber is out as Sean Montgomery. No final airdate has been announced at press time.

As the World Turns (Global/CBS) — Scott Bryce is out; Hunt Block in? Who’s next to go?

Soap Opera Weekly scored one heck of a casting shocker this week: Scott Bryce tells the magazine that he was fired over the holidays in a phone call! Wonder if ATWT will chase after the definitive Craig Montgomery, Hunt Block, who is busy hunting down kidnapped babies across America as former FBI agent Lee Ramsey on time-slot competitor, OLTL? Perhaps Scott and AMC’s Brent Weber should call each other and drown their collective Montgomery sorrows at a nearby watering hole.

Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Soaps in Depth is teasing that Emmy winner Jennifer Landon (Gwen) and Jesse Soffer (Will) may exit the soap in March. A rep had no comment, but I’ll be snooping around to see what’s up — so stay tuned.

In Turn winner out: Ryan Serhant has announced he’s leaving the soap. Could Evan have been the louse who poisoned Bob and killed Dusty? Also, Wally Kurth (Sam) and that creepy puppet of his are leaving Oakdale — thank goodness, because I’m hearing the doll was very difficult to work with and was caught going through Maura West’s (Carly) underwear drawer! Entering Oakdale is Eric William Morris, who will appear as Matt, an old friend of Casey’s, beginning on Feb. 11.

Can’t get enough of two-time 2008 Soap Opera Spirit nominee Van Hansis (Luke)? Check out his blog. www.cbs.com/daytime/atwt/behind/specials/blog/

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Taylor’s hot new man!

No casting news this week, but there are a couple of fascinating story points to touch upon. Jackie witnesses Taylor fall of the wagon, and promises to reunite Brooke and Nick! Also, I’m hearing that Taylor will get a shocking love interest next month — and you will not believe whom it is! I can’t wait to see this love story play out! And here’s another reason I need to spend more than an hour at the gym: Soaps in Depth printed one heck of a sexy shot of William DeVry (Storm), who unveils his insanely chiselled body in just a pair of swim trunks. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s as if someone sculpted the Montreal native’s body with a sword.

Coronation Street (CBC) – Star’s real-life engagement

Tom Hudson (Paul Clayton) has announced his engagement to girlfriend Victoria Milne-Taylor. The 21-year-old star popped the question while on a Cuban vacation. "Before midnight, we walked along the beach over a bridge. Palm trees made an arch and it was lit up by torch flames — and she said yes and cried," he told the Sunday Mirror. Insert barf noise, here.

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — Save Days!

Nothing new in Salem – well, except for all the dead corpses walking around. Look for the fantastic John Aniston (Victor) to pop back into Salem this February. Fans are getting nervous regarding Days’ fate — NBC is expected to announce whether or not the soap will be cancelled in 2009 later this year. If you want to be proactive, here are two campaigns to save the show: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/daysofourlives/index.html

and http://www.freewebs.com/savedays/.

EastEnders (BBC Canada) – Never say never!

Patsy Palmer is back on EastEnders — and no one is more shocked than the actress herself! After leaving Albert Square as Bianca Jackson nine years ago, Palmer originally said she’d never come back to the soap, labelling the show “rubbish.” Co-star Sid Owen, who plays her ex-husband Ricky Butcher, will also return. No word if she’s added crow to her diet.

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Coop: killer or victim?

Poor Jason Gerhardt didn’t stand a chance, especially after Josh Duhon (Logan) exploded as Lulu’s sexy new love interest. The actor has been fired, sources confirm, and is out this week. I’m told we’ll be surprised as to how Coop flees the, well, you know. That’s America Olivo playing Marianna, whom Ric comes into contact with on Martha’s Vineyard. I wonder if the slimeball ran into former Soap Opera Weekly editor Mimi Torchin at her favourite getaway destination.

Guiding Light (Global/CBS) — The moment we’ve all been waiting for!

Finally — Emmy winner and 2008 Soap Opera Spirit nominee Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan) is back on Jan. 22! Methinks a Jonathan/Lizzie/Bill love triangle could set Springfield on fire; let’s hope the soap realizes the gold mine they’ve stumbled upon. If you’re a fan, buy this week’s Soaps in Depth, who landed an exclusive cover story with Pelphrey! Also, shaking Springfield up this week: Tammy’s ghost surprises Cassie with yet another visit; Bill sees the light; Doris and Buzz shake hands; Olivia and Natalia face off over Gus; and Ava gets what’s coming to her!

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) — More drama for Llanview

That Sarah Roberts is one talented club booker! Cristian is going to have to wine and dine his girlfriend when he learns that six-time Grammy Award-winning diva Mary J. Blige is returning the ‘hood on Feb. 15 and 18 to perform two songs from her hit album Growing Pains. “Mary is one of the most prominent and powerful voices in the music industry,” said executive producer Frank Valentini. “She is an inspiration in both her music and her life, and we are thrilled to welcome her back." Blige says, “It’s absolutely amazing to be integrated into a soap opera I’ve watched since I was a little girl. I performed on the show two years ago and had a ball, and I am beyond thrilled to be welcomed back again.”

TV Guide’s Michael Logan has a doozy of a OLTL preview in his must-read soaps column this week: Jessica, who is committed to St. Anne’s thanks to Jared, runs into one of our favourite psychos, Allison Perkins (welcome back, Tales of the City diva, Barbara Garrick). Allison holds yet another secret that Jess’ “dad” Mitch took to his grave — and we’ll find out what it is! Also, expect Allison to terrorize Llanview with a gun this February. In a shocking twist of events, OLTL reveals that Lindsay was faking her mental breakdown! Perhaps that’s why 2008 Soap Opera Spirit nominee Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) chose to play out her courtroom meltdown a tad over the top? I get it now.

Passions (DirecTV/SuperChannel) – Gering casting idea!

Casting suggestion: Wouldn’t the sexy and charming Galen Gering (Luis) make a fantastic recast as Taylor’s former punk brother, Zach Hamilton, on B&B? He’d be a formidable love interest for Donna, Felicia or Bridget, in my opinion. Or for Brooke, for that matter! Anyway, this week in Harmony, watch as Valerie asks Eve if she can be her roommate, while someone shoots at Theresa, and Gwen and Sheridan form an alliance to win their men. By the way, I had trouble sleeping last week, and thankfully, Passions made the perfect sleeping aid! Thanks go out to headwriter, James E. Reilly — I owe you one!

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — The Young and the Suspenseful

Y&R is improving week-by-week, non? I love the new storyline that has Gloria “Swanson” Bardwell and Kevin trying to frame Jeffrey for her “murder,” Alfred-Hitchcock style! In a dangerous plot, Kevin plans to slowly poison his wacko mother, so Gloria can throw Jeffrey in jail and keep her fortune all to herself. Only one thing is for certain: this plan will surely backfire on the two schemers! Also, this week: Nikki divorces Victor and wins a big settlement; Sharon is forced to choose sides; J.T. vows to save his son’s soul from the Newmans; and Brad and Neil do battle. Should Joshua Morrow (Nick) be worried? Felicity's Chris Engen has been cast as Victor Newman Jr., the son of Victor and ex-wife, Hope. Engen's first airs as the MIA Newman on Feb. 12.

SOAP SYLLABUS: Melody Thomas Scott’s best storyline

As Y&R’s Nikki Newman finds herself inexplicably engaged to a man she has no chemistry with, David Chow, I thought it was time to assign a much-needed Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) history lesson as homework. The 2008 Soap Opera Spirit Lead Actress nominee kicked major acting ass when she starred opposite the sensational John Enos — that is, before Y&R fired him to bring back Kimberlin Brown (ex-Sheila). For me, this colossal casting error marked the beginning of Y&R’s critical downward spiral. And for what it’s worth, I much prefer Thomas Scott’s hair longer; I’m not a fan of her bob.

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST

1. ONE LIFE TO LIVE — and more specifically, Mr. Chris Stack (Michael)

Where the hell did OLTL find the masterful Chris Stack (Michael McBain)? The fierce actor has elevated his A-game to an A+-game in a matter of weeks after debuting on the soap. He makes John Brotherton (Jared), my favourite newcomer from last year, look like a Britney Spears back-up dancer! Of course, I’m only exaggerating, but you get the point!

I dare ask: why did it take so long for someone to discover Stack, considering the calibre of his talent? It always amazes me how many artists are unemployed out there. Stack’s scenes opposite Kathy “His name is Tommy” Brier (Marcie) last week was akin to watching a hypnotic acting tango that should be studied in schools. The weeklong scenes were heartbreaking to watch, and I was stunned at the depths Stack and Brier managed to explore, as Marcie faced handing over Tommy to Todd.

Moreover, Stack’s Michael is a much more suitable and realistic romantic partner for Brier than predecessor Nathaniel Marston ever was. Meanwhile, thanks go out to OLTL for hiring enough extras to ensure Paris, Texas, realistically looked like a town in the throes of a major media frenzy when Marci held Viki captive. I hope GL was paying attention. Kudos to OLTL’s magnificent directing team for creating a spectacular week of action and suspense!

2. DAYS OF OUR LIVES’ Brandon Beemer (Shawn) and Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe)

Raise your hand if you’re digging the chemistry between two of the sexiest actors on daytime in what has turned out to be one of soaps’ most surprising hot new quadrangles: Chloe/Shawn/Belle/Philip. You can’t see me, but both my hands are waving about right now! Answering the age-old question, can two insanely beautiful people share chemistry, depth, and soul – Days’ answer is yes, they can! And not only are Beemer and Bjorlin the best things in Salem these days, but they’re also dating in real life. I. Hate. Them. Madly.

3. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS’ Christian Le Blanc (Michael) and Judith Chapman (Gloria)

Welcome back to the real world. This past week, LeBlanc brought his over-the-top self back down to earth, especially opposite Judith Chapman (Gloria) and Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren). Likewise, Chapman seems to have toned down her campy performance as well, which is nice to see because her wardrobe is enough to shock and awe the audience. I have to admit I’m falling in love with crazy Fisher-Baldwin clan once again. The best part is I don’t need earplugs anymore whilst visiting Genoa City — hallelujah!

SOAP MALFUNCTION: RANT OF THE WEEK

B&B misses out on Brooke’s Big Fat Defense!

I’m sick of Taylor and the rest of Los Angeles beating up poor Brooke Logan on B&B! Yes, she occasionally deserves some of the malice and vitriol that is thrown her way, but I’m dying for the day headwriter Bradley Bell writes these words for Brooke: “Taylor, I met and fell in love with Ridge and Nick, long before you came into the picture. You’re the one who has gone after my men, not the other way around! Why are you so obsessed with me? Now go breastfeed my baby, bitch, and do it sober!” Wow —that felt good.

Even better, Jess is Clint's, Viki was never pregnant w/ twins (her alleged resurfaced memories was a post-hypnotic suggestion, planted by Mitch), Natalie belongs to someone else (but Viki loves her like a daughter, anyway), and we finally learn what the hell FauxVictor's resurrection was all about.

I'd like that and maybe Viki could adopt Natalie anyway(I have always sorta liked Natalie as her daughter in a way).

I'd LOVE to find out what was with that Victor's resurrection, at Asa's funeral Dorian implied that it wasn't Victor after all.

I know that was probably a throwaway line, but between you and me (and everyone else on this board, lol), I don't think the old man who demanded the "heart of a Lord" was papa Victor. More likely, he was an actor, working in tandem w/ Mitch, to drive Viki literally insane; and he faked his death (conveniently before Viki could confront him on the years of incest she suffered at "his" hands) to avoid being exposed.
