2008: The Directors and Writers Thread

Actually, MarkH, I don't lay ATWT's problems at Laiman's feet exclusively. I think she is at least one-third responsible for the show being as miserable (to me) as it is right now. However, in the past, Laiman and Passanante have stated on-record how much they enjoy working together and feeding off each other's creativity; ergo, I tend to think Laiman works closely w/ Passanante on building long-term stories.

See, that sounds closer to what I personally would think. I know DonnaB has strong opinions on Laiman, so I also hope she'll weigh in.

Butting in...I asked this the other day in some thread (source memory failure). Why is she called LETHAL Laiman?

Lethal Leah Laiman is so alliterative.

Lumina on Another World.

Passanante isn't as bad when Lethal is around.

She's written some good stuff but some really bad stuff.

And, do I remember correctly that Laiman crafted DAYS' Gideon storyline?

I don't know if I would ever want to see Carolyn Culliton as a solo headwriter. She is wonderful in the co-headwriter position and can improve almost anyone's writing if she is given the power to do so (meaning, not what she was forced to do under Ellen Weston at GL).

We have that great two-year span at ATWT, improving Hogan's ideas. But remember, Millee Taggart really got many of the characters on GL during her reign at GL, but the plots only improved greatly when CC was brought on in September 2002.

I think CC can be a wonderful wingman, but I'm not sure how she would fare going solo. Most HWs of this type tend to flounder when left to their own devices.

At one point, I'd have said what you're saying about doubt about solo HW positions, too. And, I believe at one point that CC was steadfast that she didn't want to be in that position. But, given today's landscape, I've changed my mind. So, she looks better & better given what's out there. If that makes sense, ... sadly.

But, I adore Millee. I adored her when she was a behind the scenes consultant at GL as well as when they pressed her into actual HW service. But, she didn't want to be there because of the interference, did so anyway, and said that at the point that it drove her crazy, she'd be outta there. I get that.

Watch Christopher Whitesell join DAYS soon, I would be shocked if he doesn't with the Tomlin connection.

Days can have him. He is a sucky writer. :D I am so glad he isnt at ATWT anymore.

Didn't someone tell us Gibson is already gone? I did see him in the credits recently, though. I don't recall seeing Esser (I can't say I watch that closely), but I'm 90% Bennett/Gottesfeld are gone.

Bennett/Gottesfeld's final ep aired July 10. I don't know why Toups said they are still writing.

Gibson isn't gone. He wrote the Aug 14 episode. There has been no word on his exiting (maybe you were thinking about Marc Parent).

Yes, Parent...sorry.

When is Beall coming?

When is Beall coming?

Not quick enough, as far as I'm concerned... And, dude, I've got to ask you... what in HELL is that in your avatar? I can't figure it out for the life of me!

It's a cap from Y&R. Ashes were being poured onto horse manure! :P

Specifically, it was the moment at which the ashes of David Chow (played by Vincent Irizarry) were poured on a wheelbarrow full of horsesh*t by Melody Thomas Scott's Nikki Newman.

It signalled the end of one of the most horsesh*t stories EVER TOLD at Y&R.

It should be interesting to see what happens at DAYS in the coming weeks/months. Will Noel Maxam stay on as a producer now that his friend and mentor is gone or will Gary Tomlin replace him? I bet most of those former Y&R directors will leave/get fired if Maxam is gone, unless they leave out of loyalty to Scott first or are fired as well.

And if those directors leave DAYS, I don't see them back at Y&R unless David Shaughnessy comes back. I think they'll all sadly leave the industry for good, Kathryn Foster was doining nothing until Scott convinved her to come back to join him at DAYS.
