Ok that made no sense at all. Sorry. Im not bringing anything anywhere. So what thet I heard these things said on another board. All of the message boards say the same [!@#$%^&*] as all the other ones. Its just the level of extreme that posters take which seperates one from the other. Never the less, it is still an issue being debated. I specifically said that my little message was to the person who told me that they hadnt seen it. That had nothing to do with you. You want to get involved and use the preverbial "this is a FORUM" crap...its whatever. I dont care why you pick this board. The fact is that on other boards, Kay is praised and Im just putting the FACTS on the table that she isnt Co Head or HW, just an ass. ( no pun intended)

Don't forget SB where his popularity began. Mulcahey is the best SW, but like you said, that's for another topic. :)

Back on topic though, it would only be logical to think Brad would take advice from his father's right hand person.

I think it's really quite ridiculous to conclude what Kay has/has not contributed to B&B, Jay, unless you are there working with the writers and get to witness what is going on. Soap opera writing is NOT formualic. You cannot say what a breakdown writer DOES or DOESN'T do because it's a dynamic situation. Many breakdown writers get to contribute A LOT to the overall story, while others don't. It varies from show to show, and headwriter to headwriter.

It wouldn't be out the realm of reasoning to think that Kay Alden, given her impressive credentials and her extensive history with the Bells, would get a lot of CLOUT at B&B and would be given the opportunity to contribute A LOT that a "traditional" BDW would not. Hello - she's Kay Alden! She may be writing breakdowns, but I don't have a problem believing for a minute that Brad gives her a lot of clout and allows her to contribute a lot to story. Why wouldn't she? She knows a lot more about writing soaps than him, has been doing it a lot longer, and does it a lot better (and I think he would even be willing to admit it).

Some headwriters really EMBRACE colloborative writing. Headwriters don't write by themselves, after all, they meet with their breakdown writers 2-3 weeks a week. Therefore, it's very possible and VERY likely that breakdown writers will get a say in story and will get to pitch ideas and actually have a significant impact on the direction of the show just because of their frequent interaction with the HW(s).

Lorraine Broderick was a HW who really gave her AHWs a LOT of opportunity to pitch story and to contribute to the long-term bible. You'd be amazed at how many stories on AMC, for example, were the ideas of her breakdown writers and not herself. She's a wonderful writer (her ATWT not included) and crafts story beautifully, but many of the best storylines did not come from her own head. She listened to others. On the other hand, Wisner Washam - Agnes' other "protege" was the opposite - every story came from HIM.

From what I understand, Megan McTavish is a nice lady, but she rarely used story ideas from subordinate writers unless she really, really likes them. Addie Walsh pitched the transgender story at AMC, and they used it, but it was rare that this happened under her.

I think Leah Laiman is vile, but she does give her writers ample opportunity to pitch ideas (at least when she was last headwriting ATWT). She is not a good organizer though and her stories tend to end up messy and incoherent, but at least she gives the others a voice.

So: IT ALL DEPENDS.

There is no specific formula to being an AHW.

Great post, KK!! Thanks for the insight and you're right on when saying there is no one way of being an AHW. Some AHW have different roles, some do more, some do less. And in this situation, I think Alden does a lot more.

Whatever to all of that. All you did was tell me something I already knew. What a waste of typing on your part. Your hands must be tired, because if you read what I said, you'd know that I retracted my statement about Kay doing nothing and I dont think she does nothing. I think she is getting too much credit and Brad is getting none. You act like the show is dramatically better because of some associate and in no way due to the HW. That's what the fangurls of Kay sound like.

okay mods i tried to be good and respectful and ignore this and not do what im about to do but...

HOW DARE YOU! how dare you belittle someone thoughts and opinions just because you do not agree. how dare you say that someones thought out well written post was a

waste of typing". and this be shocking to you but just because someone is a fan of KA does not make them a fan girl. and again, how in the hell do you exactly what KA or BB do at B&B? how do you KNOW FOR A FACT that BB isn't just sitting back and letting KA write his show? you dont know. and you should stop posting your thoughts and opinions as law and disrespecting others.

this thread should have been started in DTS: Love/Hate because that was the main reason behind creating this thread. to promote hate and bash someone.

There's no need to get rude. Warnings will be issued if it continues.....<_<

The fact is, we're just going around it circles.

Kay is no "ordinary" writer. It's been said before that the roles of writers are different depending on A) who's in charge and B ) what show their on. It's no secret Kay is well liked by the Bell family, and her hiring wasn't done as a "favor". It was done because she's a damn good writer despite her faults. Brad may have wanted to keep her on a leash so she could return to Y&R come the dismissal of LML and her team.

To try and say Kay has done "nothing" for B&B would be unfair. She has brought something to the table, the same way she brought something to the table when she was consulting at AMC and OLTL. While the improvement at B&B can be attributed to the team they have, Kay surely had some influence in the improvement of the writing and the stories.

    • Show starts soon. Wonder if we will get the Voice saying "The role of Ted Richardson is now being played by Keith Robinson" and if they'll update the intro
    • I initially thought BTG was going for the Duprees being (somewhat) like the Kennedy family- wealthy and politically influential. And Martin's accident being like how Chappaquiddick (Link) caused Ted Kennedy to cancel his plans to run for president in the 1970s. But now it seems to have more layers that that, so I have no idea.
    • The episodes uploaded today by the YT channel have been done through the end of November 1985 and what a mess we have in the Liza/Sunny/Hogan/Lloyd/Estelle story. I think it would have been easier to gradually bring Hogan/Sunny back together.. maybe even addressing the toxic situation and trying to work through it.   Unrelated to all that, I see that Gary Tomlin has attempted to reset the show to where it was when he left at the end of 1983.  He really seems obsessed with regressing Wendy as a character after the progress/evolution of her character post 1983.. with her sleeping with her mother's new boyfriend.   Based on what I've watched of the show online... the one consistency was the mother/daughter relationship between Stephanie/Wendy... and even though Stephanie was recast, I think violating that relationship was a mistake. I can see why Tomlin didn't last long in this stint as head writer.

    • I don't think that would be the reason tbh. Thinking about it, it's probably storyline related - I could see bio mom / dad eventually turning up (or maybe it's June as speculated) and wanting the children back. I could also see it being a part of the fall-out of Martin's secret being revealed now that he's backed down from a presidential campaign - his and Smitty's ability to be parents comes into question, which the bio parents use. They might've wanted the kids to be at a age where they could reliably speak for themselves what they prefer, but also have enough memories of their bio parent(s) not doing a good job. I'd also think that they might want to avoid having the image of this gay couple keeping a mother away from her small children, as it might skew the viewer to sympathise too much in one direction.
    • Something self-defense is my guess, and I have a feeling maybe he was protecting someone close to him and the optics looked bad so Vernon/Anita covered it up (my guess maybe he was protecting Vernon/Anita).
    • If Reginald had had more dimensions he probably wouldn't have been killed off and Carl might not have been brought back to fill the international supervillain role. I think though that the Loves were also severely damaged by the way Nicole and Peter were made iredeemable and written out. I definitely feel that loss more than the loss of Reginald, primarily since they were good characters to begin with and were only ruined during this period.
    • What if they were originally cast as Vanessa and Doug's twins and then were moved to Samantha/Tyrell when the show decided to delay introducing the twins? It's a shame they didn't stick with the original plan. BTW, does anybody have any new speculation on what Martin's secret will be? Brandon is hinting nobody is guessing it. Initially I thought it would be something where he was drunk and killed somebody or something like that but now I'm feeling like maybe it wasn't completely his fault. I don't get the vibe they're going to take him in a dark direction anymore.
